View Full Version : My Debadging Experience

Just from general chat with guys from the JG forum I gathered up a few materials to start my debadging. Here's what I used..
WD-40, Waxed floss, Hair Dryer, Denatured Alcohol, and a plastic spackle spatula.
http://i629.photobucket.com/albums/uu14/LATENATE78/Picture.jpg
First I sprayed a little WD-40 on the lerrering and let it sit for a min. They I put the hair dryer on it for aprox 30 of heat to soften the glue. I don't know about older models but the badges were being held on by black double sided tape. Then I took about a foot of dental floss and sawed behing the lettering with the floss and badges came off easily.
http://i629.photobucket.com/albums/uu14/LATENATE78/Picture004.jpg
the larger letters (Jeep, 4x4) required a little more work. I had to use a plastic spackle spatula for them.
http://i629.photobucket.com/albums/uu14/LATENATE78/spkkn.jpg
I repeated these steps fot the 4x4, limited, and front and rear jeep lettering. Where there was a little glue left behind I used denatured alcohol and it came off easily. Here is the finished product...

http://i629.photobucket.com/albums/uu14/LATENATE78/Picture001.jpg
After... (Sorry it was dark out when I finished. I took a Tack Bell break after debadging and before washing)

Just for the debadging took aprox 10-15min.....
I recomend. IMO it looks much neater and cleaner.
Good luck guys...
Very nice work Nate! Looks very cleaned up without the badges.

cool Nate....BUT....I disagree with the use of the plastic scraper. That could easily mar or scratch the paint
White WK Swagga
06-29-2009, 04:48 PM
Yeah true Scott. It was just hard to get the bigger letters started. So I used the scraper to Pry it off a little and get it started.

im close to doing it!!! i dont know if i can take off hte "JEEP" from the front and back though!
White WK Swagga
06-30-2009, 11:17 AM
Yeah the Limited was tough for me to take off too. LOL But if I was to keep any of them I would keet the jeep in the front and back.
08Hemi
06-30-2009, 11:33 AM
I doubled up Trilene (made by Berkley)- part#XLLW2C; bought 20YD's for $1.99 @ Sports Authority, it is .005" thick (or .13 mm) so it is super thin and strong; floss kept breaking on me when i did my Dodge back in the day...and the fishing line cuts through it like butter when the adhesive is heated up! Let me know if you need anything else
Take the Jeep's off...IMHO they made the most dramatic impact as I took them off first (before HEMI and Limited)...you can always put them back on should you not like them off!

thanks for the info i have plenty of that fishing line lying around:) like 300 yds of it:) questions is how would you put these back on???? guys i want new pics of the debadge!!!!
08Hemi
06-30-2009, 01:18 PM
Well you could buy new badges with the adhesive already on them OR you can strip the backing/adhesive of the ones you took off, but some 2X sided tape and cut them to fit the letters! YOU MUST clean the backs of the letters before you add new tape otherwise they will not stick properly...and make sure you but QUALITY/STRONG 2X sided tape!
Pics you say? I will take some of the front when i get home, and see earlier for pic of debadged rear!

My jeep is dark, yes, But thats why i have added chrome mirror covers (instead of painting them, leaving all my chrome badges and my chrome grille.)
But, I am going to get my front windows tinted a bit to darken them up and i figure it would really compliment the tinting to have it look all blacked out front to back with semi gloss black pillars. I think it will look good, its not like an overload of dark khaki, if i just body matched everything i think it would look like a poop blob. we will see.

Thank you nate for the crack package, what should i use, double sided tape?
NHWK05
07-03-2009, 08:57 PM
Go to any parts store or hardware store. But 3m double sided tape. (the gray foam stuff) use your thumb to rub off the old stuff. clean with alcohol. carefull stick letter to tape (should come wide and narrow) then cut out around letters with a razor.
-Then line up all letters even on a straight edge, and lay a piece of tape over the top(scotch tape should work) make sure the tape is really stuck to them. Then remove the backing from the 3m tape and now your letters will be applied in a nice line straight and even. once stuck remove scotch tape.

so after reading this thread i really want to give the debadging a try, im just kinda nervous since i just have had the car for a few weeks, is it really as simple as heating it up, cutting it off and removing the glue?, no holes to fill? i might have aq weekend project here , that is if i can really convince myself to do it, it looks awesome but i just dont want to accidentally scar my car
