So this thread is for owners to post their Oil/service history. Please put the following 3 things down at minimum:
1) Oil type used (Brand, consistency, price)
2) Length b/t oil changes
3) Experience/testimonials
Also, should I have the oil change performed at the dealer? Any benefit? What does everyone typically do for their oil change...if you do not use the Dealer please provide insight/rationale.
2006 WK 5.7L
1) Mobil 1 5w20 - Mobil 1 filter
2) 6,000 mile intervals
3) Great so far!
I prefer to do it myself. This way you can allow the oil to drain for the necessary amount of time. Your typical shop won't allow it to sit for 15-20 minutes while the oil drains. I also put a cap full of fresh oil through, let it drain, and then proceed to complete the change.

I think the benifit of having it done at the dealer is that
1 it will help keep chrysler alive
2 it adds to your service history(which is good when you go to sell your jeep)

It would be nice if you could just delete the off-topic posts in this thread. They hold no value in this thread or elsewhere and I'm sure the OP will not mind.

I do not mind if we delete all non-essential posts that do not have relevant info...
so I am seeing 5W30 and 5W20 being listed above for the HEMI; what is the advantage b/t the two? The higer the viscosity the ebtter for older engines? I have never paid attention to this stuff and want to make sure I am giving my baby what she needs!

I stick to what the manual suggests... I think there is a different viscosity for different climates. I think the "summer" is 5w30 (it may be 5w20 though) - I use whichever it is.

I believe that is true. But the safe range for the different grades of oil covers most areas of the US in terms of climate. Now you guys with proformance mods it may be different. For relitavely stock vehicles unless you live in Vegas during July and August, or you live in alaska you should be safe with 5w30 or around that range.

1.) Royal Purple 5w-20 Oil and Royal Purple Filter
2.) 1500-2500 miles.
3.) RP quieted the HEMI down a lot IMO. It has treated my HEMI well.

BTW- In the HEMI, 5w-20 MUST be used because of the MDS.

Do you think Royal Purple makes the engine run smoother than other brands? I was thinking of going to Royal Purple or Mobile 1.

Used to use Valvoline Maxlife 10w30 but they no longer make it so I switched to Castrol High milage (I have 119*** miles).
Used to use K&N filters but dont think its worth it so I get Fram now.
Change every 3k miles.
and I bought this nifty little oil bucket that I still need to try out.

Its got a nice mesh piece on top when you open the lid so you can drain the filter out.

Lately I've been changing my oil just to make the stealerdhip :screwy:nuts...I have the gold+ service plan, I had first oil change 500 klm.,service rep said I didn't need it, Plan won't cover the cost...I said "Fauuuka U", I want the oil changed after breakin I'll pay for it:mad: Yessir they said...Later when I got the car back, I pull out my wad an say how Muckin' Fuch...They said OH NO sir, because You bought this Jeep here the first oil service is on US ...I've been changing the oil and filter at a dealer every 3 months since,(not necessarily the same dealer...me not thrilled with service...Bub-BYE) some times as much as 100klm.between changes, one time they called me backand told me the plan won't pay because the Jeep had less klm now then the last service I told them that's because I backed up all the way over to the dealer this time:lol: Bub-BYE... 6 more oil changes, only 4 more local squealers... :moon::nutkick::buttkick: ME -->:tongueout:
dealers all use mobile 1 oil & filter changed 15X over 42 months / 11776klm.7281miles ;)
not a clue if runs smoother on other oil:rolleyes:

Haven't did the oil change on my Jeep myself yet...... my 1st change was on the dealerships dime at 1800 miles. At 7800 miles (3K miles to go) I'll be upgrading to Mobil One 5w-20. I used Mobil One in my last Jeep for about 90K miles and never had a problem with it and I'm also using Mobil One in my Camaro and she runs great.
I never did my own oil changes on my Lincoln because I thought it was too low to the ground for me to slide under it even with the car lifted until I did it on my SS. :D

Amen, Robert Palmer!! Chaoul1, if you're running anything heavier than 5W-20 in your Hemi, your MDS is probably not working as it was designed. (Since this is an old thread, I am sure you've discovered this by now.) The correct oil weight is indicated on the top of the oil filler cap. It's well known to most 5.7 Hemi owners that incorrect weight oil adversely affects the MDS operation. Many dealers, unless told otherwise, will put bulk 10W-30 or 10W-40 in the Hemi's. Some know it's wrong, others don't. Besides it'll bring them more $$$ when you go in and complain about poor gas mileage or the MDS not working properly. When I bought mine, the stupid dealer was proud to announce that they had done me a "favor" and changed the oil. Right on the service slip it said, 10W-30. I also have a Hemi LX, so I know how the MDS is suppose to work. The WK didn't work anything like the LX and only seldom came on. I immediately changed the oil and installed my MDS "ON" light. Now it works correctly and I can see when it's on with the light. I also use 5W-20 Mobil 1 oil and filter, and change it at 6000 mile intervals. Get a Fumoto drain valve and do it yourself. That way you know it is done correctly. If you must take it somewhere, make sure you watch them put the correct oil in. Also, get a catch can...another big help, IMO.
1. First oil changes (until 3/36 warranty expiration) were by dealer with 5W-20 dino oil & MOPAR oil filter. Now I use 5W-20 Castrol Syntec full synthetic (or Mobil-1, whichever is on sale) and K&N HP-2010 oil filter. WalMart has 5-qt jug of 5W-20 for $25.00 and K&N is ~$14.00. Just caught AdvanceAuto sale of both for $26.88 (until 9/1/10).
2. Always plan on 5,000 miles, but occasionally, it approaches 6,000 miles.
3. Installing Fumoto oil drain valve this coming weekend during the 51,500 miles oil/filter change. When I perform the service, I know what comes out, what goes in, and how it was done. No surprises or problems later because a trainee was having a bad, un-supervised day.
The 5.7L HEMI MDS operation requires 5W-20 oil to function correctly and the "HEMI tick" has all-but-disappeared with full synthetic engine lube oil. Some reports from owners that not everyone in the oil-change business has learned this lesson.

You can call bs ** you like, I have the invoices....I was lied to by the dealer as to what was covered in my $2000, service plan,I was told ALL fluids were covered I spec**ically asked about Trans,TC, d**fs, water, and was told yes all was covered...then when I went for service and was told only oil will be changed NC
Sooo, now they change it every 3 months...black dogs bite when they are kicked
What I've gained is the cleanest engine internals you've never seen.
btw I quit drinking a month and a half before 9/11... haven't had a sip since....Now I'm just an angry old plick.
