i had my jeep serviced yesterday, and all seemed fine, driving it today i have noticed a tapping noise coming from the engine bay.

it was def not there before the service. it only seems to happen when the car is idle, when i gun the engine it either dies down, or is drowned out by the engine sound.

anyone got clues?

Not sure if it's doing when cold but when I first heard it the car was warm. As regards to it coming from the left or right to me it sounds like it is coming directly from the engine bay itself or possibly even from underneath the car. Where ever the sound is cing from it sounds sick, and slightly worked because the service centre is closed until monday

also doing it when the car was cold.........

yes, found that last night. will have to wait and see what they come up with, as the service centre is closed today.

thanks for your help Scott, will keep you updated.

Do you know who got access to the TSB`s? if you cant post it openly, thats fine.

Just thinking about this now, when i change the engine oil next year will this happen again? Have to say its a pretty shitty fault, changing engine oil causes a rattle\knock sound.

there is a process to changing the oil on the diesel. If they dont follow it exactly it can cause tapping with the hydrolic tappets

I am at the jeep service centre been here since 9am and its now almost 1pm. At first they said the sound went away, yeah right, so I showed and let them listen to it again, they removed the belt and hey presto sound went away, but to my surprise they didn't follow the bulletin and wanted to work on the pulley system, so i showed them the tsb. They didn't seem impressed by this, and then said oh I know about this issue.

Still waiting for my next update.

Scott what steps should they follow? The ones on that bulletin for an oil change?

I had the 99 4.7....Not the same motor, but I noticed a tapping from my purge valve....drivers side engine bay. you may only hear it at idle.....before I put an ear to it, I thought it was a rod lol

Scott if you can find the process documented somewhere you are a legend. After hours of "diagnostics" they agreed to take the route of the service bulletin.

But i stand to lose out on 200 plus green backs for the time taken to diagnose the fault, even though i had to point it out to them. I questiond the techs not picking up on the sound after the oil change and so called "testing"

I plan to contact the UK MD of Jeep to raise this, no way I am paying 200 something to fix an issue which can arise when the oil is changed, its simply outrageous.

So anything you can find will aid me in case against these jokers. I love my Jeep but this is leaving a bitter taste in my mouth.

oil change
1. Remove top cover and oil cap.
2. Undo the oil filter but dont remove so the oil filter drains. (saves mess later)
3. Raise vehicle and remove skid plate
4. Remove drain plug and drain the oil (drain pan needs to hold at least 12 quarts)
5. After the oil drains, replace drain plug with new washer and tightened to 30 NM.
6. Lower vehicle and put 5 quarts in the oil filter housing and the rest in the oil filler. This is to prevent crankshaft damage.
NOTE : it is very important not to spill any oil around the oil filler as the alternator is directly below and oil can damage it.
7. Replace oil filter cartridge and install the new seals that came with the filter. See T.S.B http://www.wkjeeps.com/tsb/tsb_wk_0900507.pdf Slightly oil the new seals and reinstall the filter into the oil filter housing and tightened to 25 NM.
8. It is now critical to wait 15 minutes before starting to allow the oil to drain down. Service manual also say wait 15 minutes after engine has run to allow the oil to return to the pan before checking the oil level.

The Jeep dealers are a bit of a joke over here. I was once quoted an hours labour (£82) to fit a sidelight bulb for an MOT. I thought that it didn't sound right, went on wjjeeps.com and bang! Found out it takes less than a minute to do. I just stay clear as much as possible now.

tell me about the sidelights are a synch on the WH, but the main bulbs are a pain.

I have contacted Jeeps customer service now, we shall see where i go from here.

But your right about the jeep service centres they are a bunch of jokers, i was listening to some of the other customers and their conversations about their vehicles, and i was amazed at how much the service centre charges and gets away with.

If it was not for this website, and the guys on here, i would of had no choice but to follow the so called techs advice, part with a lot of cash, be led up a garden path and be with out my jeep for days, if not weeks.

will keep you all updated.
