I put in this quickoildrainvalve i added the front skid to protect it.

I bought a plastic cover for the nipple. and I use about a 6 inch piece of hose to drain it.

I bought one for mine after reading your report some time ago. Thanks for making me aware of it Rob. It Makes oil changes much simpler and cleaner. The valve with nipple is a F106N.

in a sense. but you need to buy one that fits the hole in your oil pan.

They're hard to find on ebay. It's best to get it from quickoildrainvalve.com (the company's American distributor based in Seattle, Washington) and use the coupon code YM4 to get 10% off.

I've heard rumors about how the drain valve somehow doesnt get ALL the oil out?? Any truth to this??

When I fitted mine the oil from the pan was very slow dripping. I turned the valve on and the oil continued to slow drip, so I was satisfied that it drains just as well with the valve fitted.

I change my own oil. It drains pretty fast from my engine. I am a heavy equipment mechanic, and have seen them on Komatsu and other machinery.

I tested mine same as Raymond. during an oil change let it drip for a while until it was doown to barely a dribble. fitted the valve, opened it, oil came out. done.

if you look at my pic in the OP, oil pan has a drain area sort of. It may leave a thimble full in more than without this valve but not anything noticeable or an issue.

just think how long the stealer or jiffy lube lets it drain. NOT.

actually with the 5.7l, i noticed that not all of the oil will even drain with just opening the pug, my last oil change i had jacked up the corner of the jeep for something else (making the oil pan un even.) and it dumped out about a little dixie cups worth of oil once it was thrown off even. and that was after it had actually stopped draining. so from now on im going to do that every oil change

Son of a bitch! I didn't even know something like this existed!

Good lookin' out Rob!

So can someone confirm before I purchase... the 'F-106N' (valve with nipple) will fit the 5.7 HEMI engine???

Thanks guys! I've got a change coming up in 1,200 miles, so I will be sure to put this on for the next one!

rob my other question is regarding the front skid plate. do you feel it is necessary? if so do you recall how much?

SvenskaJeepGuy
01-29-2010, 11:57 AM
if you dont have the skid plate the drain valve will be pretty exposed, mine came on my jeep so i lucked out

Could you leave the hose connected and just tuck it into the skid plate?

the drain on my 4.7 is at the rear of the oil pan. so if i lift the front a little, all the oil runs to the back of the pan and out the drain. i recently got some rapmps so i dont have to get the jack out at all

Rob, are these magnetic? I doubt they are, but that would be cool.

not magnetic matt.

rob my other question is regarding the front skid plate. do you feel it is necessary? if so do you recall how much?

mine had the plastic skid. i bought the steel on at the stealer for about 50 vux. 4 bolts. no waiting.

Just ordered one, thanks Rob

Could you leave the hose connected and just tuck it into the skid plate?

thats exactly what I did now. i used a ty-wrap to secure a short piece of hose to the nipple. tuck in under the skid until needed.

Matt
01-29-2010, 12:28 PM
Why do you guys use a hose?

It's been a while since I've been under my Jeep... would it splash without the hose attached?

robpp
01-29-2010, 12:36 PM
i have the steel skid in place.

so to drain it you have to hope the oil drains thru the hole in the skid. reality is some alwyas ends up on the skid where you cant see it but it messes the floor. so by attaching a short hose to the nipple, then opening the valve. i can direct the oil into my container without getting ANY on the skid.

its just us being anal.........

I am dreaming of changing my oil without having to remove the OEM plastic skid plate(4 bolts). I have always removed it so I can fit under without lifting the beast/keeping garage floor spot free. I crawl under on the drivers side...

rhino ramps are pretty cheap and work great for me. the hose makes it very easy to drain the oil right into an old oil jug to take to a recycler.

Matt
01-29-2010, 01:16 PM
I've got the ramps, but I've never used them on my Jeep... quick OT question... can you use ramps for the front wheels and jack up the rear and use hack stands? Would be good for when I do the axle fluid and tranny filters/fluid.

robpp
01-29-2010, 01:58 PM
that sounds a bit dicey matt. but not any different than lifting it all up with 4 jack stands......but

what worries me.......is if the jeep wants to roll it could potentially roll backwards off the ramps and push the rear stands over......

like I always use wheel chocks and the parking brake to make sure my stuff dont roll. but parking brake is rear only. and chocks would be useless while on the ramps.

Yeah that's the same scenario I played out in my head.

I'll probably just play it safe and only lift either the front or rear... never both. And yeah, chocks are a must for me as well.

I'm kinda scared of those ramps, don't they slide when you try to drive up em? Thanks for the recommendation though.

Someday I want a tile floor garage with one of these:

if you go slow they do sometimes move.

SvenskaJeepGuy
01-29-2010, 07:31 PM
mine have rubber pabs under them and they dont slide at all going up them. they also have a 1.5 inch lip at the top to keep the jeep from rolling backwards. i still use the parking brake, but i am on very level ground.

joe i will have you know that my XJ, 125,000 plus miles HAS NEVER HAD HER OIL CHANGED BY ANYONE OTHER THAN ME. I swear on my WK

and its not because im cheap, i just have used Mobil 1 from 500 miles so i can accept the extra cost of the oil if i save the labor....in my feeble mind anyway.

do it! its very easy on the WK and you can you the best oil and filters for the same price you pay someone else to do it for you. it is also much quicker than having someone do it for you.

I take my vehicle to the dealer/shop as little as I can. Very rarely does a dealer/shop let the vehicle sit for the appropriate time to let all of the oil drain out before pinching it off and refilling. Why would I pay someone to do a 20 min oil change (and not do it properly) when I can do it fo' free and use good oil/filter??

I do my oil changes without lifting the Jeep at all too, so it's a relatively fast change.

It ain't about the money, it's about doing it correctly... shops/dealers... they don't do it correctly.

Where the **** am I supposed to change my own oil? In the middle of 8th Ave? I can picture it now, I put some money in the meter, whip out the jack stand and ramps, place the vehicle on them, let the oil drain for 45 minutes, put some more money in the meter, put on new oil filter, put in new oil, clean up and leave. LOL

I hate the crawling around and dripping oil nonsense. I'll gladly pay someone else to do it and dispose of the oil properly for me. That and I can more easily schedule the hour it takes to get it done, versus the inevitable two or three it'd take me. What with getting everything together, crawling around, cleaning up and disposing of the used oil and filter. Even if I had a lift or floor pit I'd still pay someone else to deal with the oil. My time is ABSOLUTELY worth the price differential.

Another upside to taking it to a shop is having someone else lay eyes on the vehicle. I've got a decent shop I use for oil changes. He spotted a small coolant leak from the thermostat. One I would likely have missed. It was a quick job for me to do it a few days later. I'm sure he'd like to make the money doing the job, but his attention to detail is what keeps me coming back.

Now, I'm more than willing to do the rest of the work. I like most of the other jobs. I just hate crawling under it for oil changes.

It has never taken me more than 20 min to do an oil change. I buy oil for 3-4 changes at a time and have about 15 filters in my garage. Not a hassle at all and since i have a drain i never get dirty. I have a 20qt jug to store oil and it goes with my jeep for a tire rotation. The tire shop take the oil and uses it to heat their shop
