View Full Version : WK Headlights - Rob's version

So many moons ago I took these headlights apart.
to do that, is NO EASY BRO.
Here is a pic of all the parts once opened. . what might not be clear is on the middle piece, the amber piece snaps over it. it has a trapezoid shape where the light shines thru. you need to put something in that void or else you'll have raw bulb shining thru, so amner bulb is required for sure.
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn11/robpp/_whistler/baked_light.jpg
to open them: not easy, pain in the ****ing ass!
230 degrees for about 13 14 minutes and lots of patience. may start to come apart, then cools, back in the oven again. you'll need some leather gloves.
I took out every chisel, scraper, screwdriver, plastic pry bar, I had in tool box and brought in the kitchen. you have to start off gently and with something rather thin. you start at the end away from the amber. there are 4 locating pin like things. you can start near one of those. so you heat it for 13-14 minutes at 230. get some good leather gloves, no holes to handle the freaking light. it ****ing hot and its big. also be careful not to break the mounts. they stick out, you are trying to apply pressure to the pry tool, i used a towel kind of trying to make sure the mount wasnt unsupported or covered. you may even need 2 towels on the table. ok so you first need to start prying with something thin. you have to kind of break the seal. youy can start to see the edges seperate. so you do that for a few inches, then you get the next size tool. now remember, as you try to pry if you twist too hard, the tool digs into the bottom black part. that can be easily chewed up by the tool you are using. so there is no exact science here. my very first one went easy oner I broke the initial seal. I have done 5 more since then, none have been that easy. 3 of them required a cool down then a complete re-heat. like leftovers. so you work that one end, those two corners. once you get it to start, you progressively use a bigger tool or more pressure to get the seperation moving along. Like I said, it may taker to long and you need a reheat. so when you got an inch or so back there you can start pulling the halves apart. you may need to use a tool to loosen glue as you go. once you have a few inches and cang et your fingers in the opening, add more force to pull them apart. the amber end is last, and it is a bit more difficult to seperate that end. lots of glue and the parts just fit together deeper.
So I finally got around to painting the amber parts. primed. color. clear. then nightshades on the inside to tone down the amber a bit.
so here it is mocked up.....
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn11/robpp/_whistler/whistler_01.jpg
with the lens on it.
so everything is painted except the vertical lined areas. i didnt paint those sop they reflect the light.
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn11/robpp/_whistler/whistler_02.jpg
now if the ****ing LED HALOS will show up in a timely manner, we can get these installed.

there have been some posts on the lx site. i think they have solved the issue for everyone. not its just a matter of production.
when your jeep is running it sends 14.4 volts to the light circuits.
it makes the leds bright, also makes them hot so they burn out fast,
a simple resistor gets hot, ask the guys with led turns, so haviong them near the halo was NG.
so supposedly the solution is on the way. Last time I contacted FlashTech he told me to contact him around the 20th for an update.
I hope he has GOOD NEWS.

Excellent write up Rob,
All in all this wasn't really all that bad I went with 235* for 15 minutes. I had to do a total reheat about 4 times per light.
Head lights are apart and the pieces are at the shop getting color matched Brillant Black Crystal Pearl (PXR).
Now for the questions:
Where do I get this Nightshade spray tint at? How many coats, and any tricks to it?
Where do I get and what is the name/number of the chrome turn signal bulbs that blink amber like Scott has?
I'm going to pull the pin in the harness so they only blink, they will not light up for the parking lights as that will be the job of the halo's
Thanks for your help,
Escape
P.S. 2 days left till the Jeep is home

Ok we are back to updates about this mod.
The LED Halos are here. Im going with a green set. So the first order of business is to make the lights blend in with the housings, which are mineral grey, IIRC
So I got some 1/8 in pinstriping tape to protect the LEDs from the paint.
so this is the LEDs in white just to give you an idea, you know me, it'll be weeks before Im ready for the complete install
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn11/robpp/_whistler/JGCrings004.jpg
this is what I need to make blend in

here is the pic with the light taped
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn11/robpp/_whistler/halo_taped.jpg
and then painted mineral grey. i used a touch of ahesion promoter first. i think i am going to skip the clear!
http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn11/robpp/_whistler/halo_painted.jpg
thats it for now. hoping to have it all painted by the weekend.
I still need to get to the fogs. anyone have a band saw I can borrow

Careful with the VHT Nightshade it has a reddish tint to it so it will alter your Halo color (green) to a brown (red and green make brown)! I used it on my amber turns inside the lights and as you can see in this pic they have a red tint to them now.

glued the rings to the painted inserts

then took care of the wires. i added plugs here to m,ake it easier to put together.

then i worked for hours with heat and a small screwdriver and removed ALL the old glue.

then ran some wires through the housing. i put ty wrap on each side so the wires cant pull thru. and a blob of silicone.

had a fawking hugh setback today while gluing the fawking lights together.
i been preaching about using this 3m window weld. have been told that is what the OEM uses. you dont want to use silicone bacause you cant get it apart again because haet doesnt loosen it like the oem glue.
anyway, i wait 2 weeks for this 1/4 ribbon of window weld. problem is it a tad too much to fit in the channel in the lights. so i go to napa and they have a tube of window weld for a caulk gun. i know this can be messy but i can deal with it. use lots of vinyl gloves.
so i get going on the first one. lay out a bead. i plug in the halos. i put the insert into the clear part and put it all together. its a tad messy but any glue on the clear will come off with mineral spirits. i have a strap clamp i put around it. a few spring clamps. its all looking good. i decide i need to test it. i get a 9 volt battery. i try first 2 wires and good to go, next set doesnt light up. WTF. mess with wires. no luck. must have f'ed up uinside the light. i get into panic mode as its all glued together. i yank it apart. i find a crimp connector failed. I reconnect. all this with the f ucking glue everywhere. I try to slam it all back together. i get balck glue everywhere. on the insert. the f ucking lens. oh fawk. im freaking out. yank it apart again. i run out of gloves and rags. glue is f ucking everywhere. oh what a mess. ruined a pair of jeans t-shirt. a bag of 24 cotton rags. 3 roles of paper towels. a box of exam gloves. a can of mineral spirits. acetone.
outocme: i got it all off the grey part. HOWEVER THERE ARE AZOUT 3 F UCKING SPOTS OF BLACK CEMENT INSIDE THE LIGHT lens. and stains from the mineral spirits. but i resealed them anyway.:mad::mad:
good news is the other one came out perfect. well almost. a few glue spots on the outside lens only. they come off with the mineral spirits
I dont know if Ill ever get the glue off my hands. throw away the jeans and t-shirt. 4
so I just bought a pair of DEPO aftermarket ones. they SUPPOSED to open easy. I have another set of rings. these are white. so when the lights arrive, ill do another set......... meanwhile I am going to continue with ALL the wiring using these to get it all set up for the next set.

Hello Robpp, I was veiwing your thread, i wish this might help..
I did more than a 1 month research before taking the action to insert my Halos.
The BEST way to open those lights is by a heatgun. I tried 2 sets with oven, didnt work with me, tried them with heatgun, worked like magic.
The BEST Glue that other guys on other car forums worldwide are using to seal those lights is the Nissan OEM sealer.. Rubber butyle. its what nissan use to seal their lights, and its what u can re-heat to open yout jeep lights again. i have bought it from the local dealer . I also bought the complete ACC head light HALO and fog light conversion .. but due to some of your posts and mislikes of CCFL, i am not going to install them anymore!
I am gonna switch to LED halos.. What do you recommend? ACC or Flashtech? why ? whats the difference!

I never tried a heat gun but have recently opened another set without TOO much trouble. but I will get a heat gun and give it a try.
The issue with the butyl in a roll like that is that its too much, too thick, i tried it. 3M sells the same stuff called window-weld ribbon. I got the smallest thickness they have and it was still to thick.
so i used 3m window weld in a big caulking gun tube. it works great but as I posted can be messy. i was thinking of taking the butyl like you show, but the 3m one, and trying to slice it in half but I havent tried that yet.
For the LED halos themselves, i prefer Flashtec because:
1. aac has lots of complaints, especially from jeep guys and i feel like they sold the CCFLs and casued a few cars to go on fire. they have no problem selling stuff that can cause harm
2. flashtec provides and adjustable voltage regulator. the problem is most LEDs are made to withstand 12 v. if you test the jeep, it sends 14.4 to the lights. could overhaet the LEDs, not good.
BUT
you will need to check with Flashtec if they have any more Jeep ones in stock. last time I contacted tehm they only had a few left.

Hello Rob,
Thanks for the reply and the info :)
about the rubber butyl stuff, you can elongate it with your hand, ( stretch it ) so it becomes thinner, thats what i did, so it can sit in the beads, try it, it works well.
About the Jeep thread, thank you all about the replies :) i will share the jeep in thread with you guys so that i can get feedback from all of u jeep masters :) , but i need some time till i go to my country bcz i am abroad, maybe next week tops ..
And yes, the jeep ' WAS ' 2 doors , it is currently being re-painted after removing welds and converted again to ariginal 4 doors, bcz beleive it or not, it didnt pass our country inspection !@#%$ ! :( :( :( i just have few pics of 2 doors conversion..

That is ****ing bull shit. Why wont it pass? Did you make it so you can get in and out of the back okay? Safe?
I would have chopped the rear doors in half and made the fronts bigger like the custom 2 door chargers that are out there.
robpp
11-15-2009, 03:24 PM
my GUESS is that if you didnt extend the front doors and make the front seats foldable or slidable, you would have problems.
I wonder if you just took out the backseat and said it was a 2 seater now, if that could get past it.
it all depends what country and what they were inspecting it for I guess?????????
Hamze
11-15-2009, 03:39 PM
I couldn't extend the front doors, its too hard to get rid of the inner pillar between the doors and move it backward, its also hard to extend the doors, its hard and expensive job :) ..
I dont have back seats anymore, because i intend to install 6 woofers, facing to the roof... so no back seats..
what i did is just welded the back doors, and shaved the handles + shaved back wiper, and widend the Fender flares 1 inch on each side all around, the jeep looked good ... but... it didnt pass , bcz on papers there are no 2 door jeeps , they simply refused... :( and i am now, after a week gonna continue the work on reshaping the 4 doors.... Tiring work :(

That sounds like such a PITA. I am really sorry they had to be like that after all that work. Around here, you can find places to do the inspection that will either pass it regardless cause they want to help you out or they just dont care and then you just register it as what you want for the most part.
People take regular Cherokee and chop the back to be like a pickup and re register as a jeep truck or take the old school Comanche pickup and re build it with 2001 XJ parts and re reg and inspect it as a 2001 jeep cherokee pickup.

so we left off with a slight disaster. then i busted the light taking it apart the third time.
so i got another set of oem used. I was able to reuse the center part, i already had with the halos attached. i had to do some painting and wiring to get the new parts in the same shape as the old parts..
then today i removed ALL the old glue. i used my new heat gun to do it.
that plus some small screwdrivers. it can be thick in some places.

http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn11/robpp/_whistler/hl6.jpg
so i put this stuff in the channel. then i put the light all together and clamped it. then i used the heat gun to seal it all back up and cranked down on the clamps one last time. i will leave it till tomorrow.

Hey Rob !!! Awesome !
How did u have the guts to go with green? :) it turned out nice! definately a head turner :)
at 8 volts, these are more than bright in my opinion ! u dont need to go up to a higher voltage... at 8 volts these leds will have also a much more longer life than 10v.

What happened between you and them Rob?
robpp
12-02-2009, 08:05 AM
i just really dont like their business practices.
I looked into the CCFL rings a while back. They require a 110 volt power supply. they sold you some very cheap chinese PS that went on fire a lot of the time. then they started the switch to LEDs, at the same time became a vendor on the red site PUSHING CCFLs. When i asked about leds, they tried to push the CCFLs on me. Then they had a GB on red site for like 139, reg 199, but aha, i find them on ebay for 99. I buy those, they have the power supply that goes on fire in that package for 99. so after its a known issue, they continue to dump the bad ones. while the rest of the market was going led, they tried to force Jeepers to use CCFLs.
last point: no matter what site you go to you can find complaints about them: quality, longevity, customer service.
so I washed my hands of them and found Flashtech. they had challenges too. they produced 7 volt and 10 volt rings for us and everyone else. they were tested with 12v running thru the rings no issue. well, if you put a meter on any chrysler car, they have 14.2 running to the lamps when running. FlashTech hired PLCMAN to make the adjustable voltage regulators, cost about 15 bux to produce, and GAVE them to everyone that bought a LED kit from them. YES, GAVE EVERYONE, at their expense, a regulator to make sure there are no problems.
aac says their rings can handle the 14.4, only time will tell.

Beastly looking Rob! Great job!
I'm no fan of that vendor you talk about either......never replied any of my mails, no order confirmation......poor "plug and play" products. Everything has to be redone in order for the CCFL's to work good. But once you figure out how to set it up and get it all installed....it's quite breath taking. Not thanks to them nor their instructions obviously.
Anyway....keep it up man!

1. I need to run a wire from the cabin to under the hood. from the hood I didnt see much...... any ideas??? this is for my switch for the halos. pics in a few minutes.
2. how do you take out fog lights. its too cold to spend a lot of time figuring it out. they need to be cut open for their halos too

Rob, to take out the fogs you would need a t20 torx screwdriver. you can probably see the screw from the pic.
http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn47/GaMeGoLd/006-8.jpg
after that you just have to pop out 2 screws in the back, also w/ t20 and i dont know what you call that, labeled by green arrow, just push them out after. hope it helps!

There are a few grommets on the fire wall that are either high up behind the radio or almost right behind the dash if your looking from the floor up at the fire wall. If going from below the dash you will need to remove some of the sound deadening insulation in most places to get at the fire wall and make a hole or to find the grommets. when i ran my sub power wire i just found a safe spot under the dash and drilled a hole and sealed it with rtv.

I've Shaved the rear wiper off my jeep. So, i used the grommet just beside the brake pedal where the old washer fluid hose used to pass :). took out the hose, and ran the switch wire in there.
You can also pass the wires beside the fluid hose if you want.

230 degree preheated oven. bake for 14 minutes, the best item i have found, i have opened up 3 sets to date, is very sharp wood chisels. they come small like 3/4 inch to 1.5. they go bigger but thats the biggest i have. anyway, using a wide tool that is sharp so it can break the seal makes it much easier and safer for the black part. you get so much more leverage with a wide chisel. dont go to wide or you want have enough strength to twist it.
i also use the heat gun if its really being stubborn. so oven, then pry, heat gu, pry heat gun, like that.
JDubya
01-29-2010, 08:03 PM
yeah I did all that. I've opened several different makes of lights for retrofits and never had so much trouble. This was my second set of HID WK lights. The first set was marginally easier--they were sealed with black silicone. This second set was much worse. They were sealed with some kind HARD plastic that was impervious to heat. Seriously. They were basically plastic-welded together :banghead:
Scottina06
01-29-2010, 08:05 PM
the set on my GC now is sealed with a black rubbery substance. But I have some new ones that are like the ones you describe....like clear hard plastic

01-29-2010, 09:05 PM
I think they changed the late 09 and '10 HID's becasue of leaking/condensation. my first set had a drip on one I had to seal up. I eventually returned it to LKQ for a new one....and it leaked. I sealed it as well.
