Hello all, new to this forum, but not to Jeep vehicles. I've owned an '89 Jeep Wagoneer 4.0L, '95 GC limited 5.2L, '05 Jeep GC 4.7L, and currently own a Dodge Charger R/T. Well I'm looking into getting back into a Jeep, but have a few questions. I know alot of you guys seem to be into the off road aspect of Jeep Grand Cherokee's, but I have a question about the 5.7L HEMI motor. Now I assume it is the same motor and tranny I have in my car, but I noticed 5.7L HEMI "Jeep" aftermarket performance cam shafts and heads are hard to find is existent at all. My question is does anybody know if I took the cam and heads off my Charger, would they work on the Jeep? Would the AWD systems be able to handle the added power? I know the diablo predator tuner is compatible between the different engines. Curious is anyone has done this or has any insight.

welcome derek! I dont have a hemi but I'm pretty sure the 5.7 hemis are the same and everything should be interchangeable. The QD2 is a great system and wouldnt have a problem with extra power. Intakes and things will be different on the Jeep. Bwoody performance makes a great CAI for the 6.1/5.7. Check it out here...they are a vendor here.
Maybe some of the 5.7 hemi guys will chime in soon with more mods....like the 180 tstat and such

That would be the 180 stat made by jet lol...Dont worry about the AWD system not unless you getting close to 500HP to the crank...I have a 5.9 psuhing 400 HP at the crank and my AWD is handling it great the tanny didnt lol but the transfer case is fine and its used lol...

Welcome. As far as i knwo your parts should fit fine, the base line 5.7 SHOULD be the same among the different vehicles but may vary by year, but thats my own assumption.
Also, You will find more street jeep owners on here then 4x4 off road jeepers, We do have some but its a smaller part of our jeep garage community at the moment.
Good luck!

Derekblk06rt,
First question I have is what year Jeep are you looking at getting and what is your goal with it?
From Edmunds "With the RT, Chrysler's now famous 5.7-liter Hemi V8 comes standard. It puts out impressive numbers: 340 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 390 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm. That Road/Track Performance Group option bumps horsepower to 350 hp at 5,200 rpm (torque remains the same) by increasing the size of the intake tube running into the throttle body and replacing the three-passage muffler unit with a more straight-through design."
The 5.7 Short blocks are the same. The heads, valves, springs and intake manifold should be the same depending on year and air filter box and it's location is different due to the engine bay layout. It puts out roughly the same numbers as the Jeep.
The Jeep has MDS not sure about the R/T
With just heads and cam the AWD will be more than able to handle it...when you get above 500hp at the wheels then you might have to worry about it. The Jeep stock puts out around 290 at the wheels, so you have pleanty of play room.
If your looking for heads and performance parts check here:
http://www.sharadon.com/
talk to Denny or Jerry and tell them James sent you.
or try here:
http://moesperformance.com/
If you need any more info let me know, and yes your heads and cam will fit...I'm not sure if they would help or acheive your goals without seeing the specs on what you have.

thanks for your help all, my R/T has MDS, I'm looking into either an SRT or Limited/Overland from the current generation (2005-2008), soley for street use and occasional trip down the strip. i can get the limited/overload option for a lot cheaper than the SRT in my area (central PA), srt's are hard to come by. If I went the Limited/Overland route it would most likely be a sleeper, maybe some mild exterior hints as to what it really has. hope that helps.
also are the AWD systems on an SRT and Overland the same?? I know the SRT has QT on demand and overland has QT II, what's the difference? I know the SRT AWD system can handle well over 500hp. If they are close or the same, i'd think the QT II could handle about that as well.

believe me...save the trouble/heartache/badgering and get an SRT in the first place

I'll be honest mate, I reckon for what you'll spend trying to get a 5.7 to go better, you'll be much better off searching for an SRT8, it will still be faster and you'll be able to have a quick Jeep strait up, no fluffing around.

lol, Scott thinks the same I see :)
The QDII is very different to the SRT 4WD system. In fact, they share nothing.

Derek, if they're (SRT) hard to find, maybe you can enlist the help of one of our knowledgeable members to help you find one and have it delivered :) (someone like Elvis maybe?)

Derekblk06rt,
If you decide on a SRT8 check out the Red site. I know there are some stock ones and some Built ones for sale. I know Navyavi is selling his over there for around 40K and it's well worth it (0-160 in 16.8 seconds  ).
What are the prices on the Limited/Overland vs the SRT8 in your area?
Should be about 10K difference? With that 10K you could forge and stroke a 5.7 or replace the 5.7 with a 392 or a 426 or Turbocharge it up to 7psi safely on the stock internals.
The SRT8 and the Laredo both have the same trans housing (W5A580) but the internals are different. The W5A580's are known for their trans issues (leaking seals/failing electronics/shuttering).
The SRT8's transfercase has issues when you drive it like you stole it alot or if you mess with the ESP!
The SRT8's are known for horrible freight train sounding brakes.
The SRT8's crank and cam are forged but the rest of the internals are cast and the pistons have a very very small ringland so becareful if you push it.
Please don't get me wrong it is a very nice and fast vehicle, I am just pointing out known issues to make you aware.
The Limited and Overland have the 545RFE trans. I have had no issues with mine YET (we will see how much it holds soon enough  ) - nor have I heard of any so far. According to my sources it will hold 500whp no problem, 600whp is pushing it...I should point out that the Torque Converter
is the weak link as it can only handle around 400whp.
The NV245 Transfercase used in the Quadra-Drive II system is bulletproof and has been problem free sitting behind a Stage 3 racing 545RFE Trans powered by a supercharged 392 installed on a Dodge Ram Super Bee. This 5100 lb. vehicle currently runs 11.29 @ 115.77 MPH, 60ft. - 1.521 seconds, 330 ft - 4.501 seconds,1/8 mile - 7.095/94.44MPH, 1000 ft - 9.359 seconds, 1/4 mile - 11.294/115.77. The NV245 has also ran in stock form many many Baja races with no issues.
As for the (ELSD) Electronic Limited Slip Differentials 7.9 front 8.3 rear in the QDII system. I know they have held 7psi with no issues so far...we will have to see how they hold up to 10,15,20psi's when I get mine back. The 15 and 20psi's will be after I install my Stage 3 race trans.
The stock internals on the 5.7 are not made to push them too far as they are cast and the ringlands on the pistons are very very small...keep an eye on your EGT's and get better internals !
The 5.7 block has a thicker piston wall than the 6.1 and it also has MDS which can be used with most cams and provides a 20% increase in fuel economy if you drive like a grandma!
All in all it's up to you and how far you want to go. There are also small differences in each model year and the 05 is the only one with a second owner transferable warranty (7/70K at $150.00 to transfer within 30 days of purchase) all the rest are lifetime for original owner or 3/36K only for second owner.

Welcome Derek!
Here are your options for a SRT right now:
1.) Buy used. There are no and I mean no 09's laying around on lots. Every new SRT is sold.
2.) Order a 2010. Email/Call Peter at Just for Jeeps, tell him Joe with the Overland sent ya and he can help you out.

again thanks all..... i found this Jeep not to far off from me.
http://www.goodsautosales.com/detail...CarID=10224226 (http://www.goodsautosales.com/details.asp?CarID=10224226)
thoughts on this jeep...... would i be stupid to pass it up?? THE ONLY THING IS THAT IT'S NOT BLACK! but i can live with inferno red for now. Otherwise, it has everything from factory i want and the only performance thing i would add to it would be lowering it, otherwise everything else i'd even imagine doing is done to it! i'd like to see recepits if he has them, not sure where they get $25K in mods, unless he's counting labor for the installs at a jeep garage. they only think i'm not sure about is the 125 shot of nitrous, though for SRT i was told that is not too much.
I can get an 06-07 overland/limited for under $25k-ish, 08's pushing upper 20's, 05's under 20K depending on milage. i can't afford brand new, i was looking under 30K milage used. I know SRT drivetrains are pretty hardcore.

Has to be the 80-90 dollar per hr labor charges...there is about 8-12k in actual cost in mods.
If you want more info on it I'd contact "dyno Steve" He's a great guy and I know he is a member on the red site.
As for the nitrous make sure you load the tune before you set it off. If it's a good tune which I imagine it is you will be fine.
Be sure to have a mechanic check it out before you sign on the dotted line...best idea would be to have dyno Steve check it out personally.
