Hi all,

So, after having introduced my new 3.0 CRD WH (http://www.jeepgarage.org/showthread.php?t=16362), let me make a little presentation of my other toy; the only similar point with the big toy is its color: full black :D

It's a Caterham Super Seven.
At the begining, it was a Roadsport Edition with a regular 1.6 - 16v Rover engine. This engine was enough for the car : 115hp for only 550kg but with the love of having the hands inside the engine, I did the replacement of some items:
PiperCross SuperSport camshafts
Vernier pulley and reinforced timing belt for enabling sharp setup of the engine.
Larger Throttle boy
Full alloy and bigger velum
4-2-1 exhaust, free of catalyser

So now the engine is set to 140hp (at least) with very fast response at the acceleration (better intake and exhaust) :Arround 5s for 0 to 60 mph.

But, I can't use it in the winter, the salt used on the road could damaged the body and the chassis of the car (aluminium body panel).

Driving such car is like riding a moto but without heavy security equipment (head and body protection), you can touch the road with you hand while you are inside the car.
Every one turn their head when you pass

When the weather will be better, i'll make some photo with the two black toys together :)

Here are some photos took last summer:

Thanks.

I'll already tried but the two equipment I had at the moment I did the photos failed: a digital tape and hard drive cameras.
The two failed whiled recording onboard of the Cat, two many vibrations while driving  (hard drive and tape motor failure).
I have now the solid state digital recoder; I'll do some when weather will be better.

Very cool, I have always liked the 7's.

My uncle is in the process of building an r1 powered locost ( low cost, home made lotus 7)

Very cool cars, handle like a dream

Thanks,

I know some guys who own such configuration; they told me that driving this type of 'car' is amazing! I have to test...

In a first time, I tried to build by myself a seven from the factory kit available at Caterham UK but french laws avoid doing that (you can build it but you can't drive it). So I bought one from a friend who was a Caterham reseller in France and know I spend time in performance tunig, detailing, driving.

You can get one in America, you can get information at the following site : http://www.uscaterham.com/ (I don't work for Caterham ;))
But as I can see, the price is arround 40k$ which is higher than in UK but lower than in France (difficult to understand their pricing policy...).
There are several retailers in the USA.

I only know the California Caterham Club but I'm sure that some other exist.
If you are interested in, you can take contact with them.
Caterham owners are very entousiast when talking about their toys (as you can see ;)) and they will give you a lot of information about this car.

The best you could do is to have a test drive with one of these people (they/I love share with people the sensations we have with this car) and so you will be able to feel by youself:
One of my neighbor rides a Triumph and asked me about sensations comparison between a seven and a moto... I told him 'OK, take the wheel' and was surprised by the given sensations: the same than on a moto but without protection (helmet, suit,...).

I've worked on one of these running a Honda S2000 powertrain.

Is this a true Lotus or a Kit car?

You can find plenty of Lotus Caterham style kits here. The last I looked they are all over the place. In just about every price range too.

You can find very affordable Lotus kit cars all around America. One of my best friends is currently building an All-Wheel-Drive 4G63 powered one.(Mitsubishi Eclipse powertrain).

This is a Caterham; in 1973, the Caterham company who built the Lotus Seven for Lotus, bought all the Lotus Seven licences after that Lotus decided to stop its production.
Caterham so continues to produce Super Seven cars based on the original Lotus Super Seven (the last one is the R500: 500hp per metric ton).

It is common to say that Caterham cars are true Seven and the other are only copies but Westfield and Donkerwoort produce also very good Super Seven and other too.
Kit cars are not allowed on open road in France, nor in the rest of the Europe except in UK, the car paradize ;).

In comparison with the Seven, it's a Touareg

It's the VW Polo V with the 1.4 EFI engine. It's for my wife because she works a less than 2 km from house but... I sometimes have to take it because the GC has disappeard from the parking

A Caterham car isn't a kit car (except in UK where you can choose to build it by yourself) and is built in UK; this is why its cost is high.
I don't know the legal points in the USA but in Europe it is virtually impossible to register a car built by yourself. You can build one but in this case you will be only allowed to drive onto a cicuit.

There are several publication and web sites about lowcost and Seven-like building for few money and it's very interesting.
