so this past weekend i spent my time in the freezing upstate temps. saturday night it got down to -11* up there.:eek: it was cold.
i started thinking of how this cant be any good for the beast, thinking cold starts and what nots type of deal. i kept thinking daym its phucking cold for her out there.
im just thinking the oil prolly soo thick and etc. cant be that good..
the next morning i started her up when it said -3 degrees. it started right up but i let it sit for soo long before i decided to roll out to get breakfast.

Yeah man... I know what your thinking because here in Missouri we had a really bad cold front come through and we had the temps drop to -20 here and I still was worried about starting my jeep but she did without hesitation and I let her warm up pretty good before I got in and started driving...

Im sure the Canadian boys will chime in as Im sure they get some ridiculous temps where they are at... not sure if they are affected by it or not... would like to see what they have to say...

Lowest we had here was -17C. My WJ had no probs.

^^ yeah, where Im at the winter temps stay pretty consistent at or around the mid teens... nothing in the negatives... I would imagine temps that stayed in the negatives all the time might affect it more... but who knows

yup, i started to think of things i could do to keep her a bit warner while i sat by the fireplace- haha
i even went as far as thinking i have a 8-10 foot electric blanket heater in the garage, maybe i should throw that on the front of the car- lol- almost went and looked for it- haha
honestly i dont like it that cold. for me im fine, i can deal with it. its just shes my baby, id hate to damage her in anyway. even the slightest bit would have me in tears.

01-24-2011, 08:38 AM
I know exactly what you mean man haha..... she's my baby too and I take care of her better than myself :D... does yours not have a engine block heater? would you consider adding one just in case or for peace of mind?

i read that its not ideal for the 6.1 motor...but i wouldnt indulge in one really to be honest, heard too many bad to combat the good.

01-24-2011, 08:41 AM
yeah... thats what I thought.. hell to be honest I never really even checked if mine has one.. My jeep came from MI so it might be equipped w/ one because its fully loaded..

YKPizzaGuy lives about as North as you can get and I don't think he's had any issues either. Just let her warm up and you should be good to go.

hey Tilla are you using a 0-x weight OIL? that might help/
out here in CO it dont get cold often but it gets way colder than NYC  the avg low at night for right now is 15 while the avg high is 43.
anyway, for the wionter in MY DD XK 4.0L I use 0/30 for these relly cold months and it starts noticeably easier. of course a block heater, battery blanket, battery tender would all help you as well.
remember your srt8 isnt the first gasoline combustion engine made. they deal with cold rather well if you tend to the oil and battery and fluids,. give it time to warn up etc.

ive had my srt8 in the fargo area for a winter and now a half of a winter and ive never had anything change whether it was 95 degrees outside and humid as a mofo or just last week it was -36...it wasnt the windchill either. the windchill was -60. she was in the garage most of the time, but i did have to run into town, and it fired right up. i dont think cold weather really affects an srt anymore than a standard wk or any other jeep for that matter. i run the 0w 40 royal purple and never had a hard start in the cold Minnesota temps.

cheers rob, im a hawk on the fluids constantly, maybe i should look into the battery blanket and etc for future long hauls. on saturday i was going to take my 5.7 limited instead of the beast but i didnt want to unload everything twice, soo i kept the beast out on the road instead. its these times i loved winging out my old ZJ up there-- RIP*
hold on there were more before me?? j/k- oh and i know this isnt the first :D im just very cautious with her ya know how i am. ill ask the questions that people dont ask about on a seldom rate :) i wanted to hear from owners like you, in your always cold areas. it can never hurt to pose the question. cheers bro:thumbsup:

ok i thought maybe somebody might perceive this thread a bit in the opposite direction...thats cool though, afterall this is the internet:eek:
the point of this thread wasnt "oh man its cold" oh nooooz" :D however i do hear all of you's though.
my point was to get to get a sense of whats too cold for start ups, whats too cold for oil pressure etc...whats your artic measures...whats too cold for SRT engineering in general....
i know its colder everywhere but ny all the time. is why i wanted to pose the thread in the SRT8 section rather than the good old sections. i wanted to hear from the rockies to canada and abroad.
cheers fellas

I have a CRD and its been as low as -40 C or -40 f for that matter up here in northern Alberta. I had forgotten to plug in my block heater one day, but it still fired up no problem. A little rough but still no problems

Um I have 2 fireplaces in my garage so I don't have those issues. LOL I was actually in LA this past weekend. On the red eye home Sunday the pilot announced it was 7 degrees in NY I almost had a seizure.

I broke all 5 wheel studs the other day, and lost a wheel. It was intense. it was -30C and the tow company said I was the 6th call that night of peoples wheels falling off. it took 3 tow trucks to get my jeep on the flatbed, they had to use a frame lifter, otherwise say goodbye to my SRT rear end.
Yesterday was an expensive day....
$200 to tow (jeep roadside was a 4 hour+ wait)
$1000 for new wheels
$600 mopar kit
new rotor, pad, and brake line (waiting for that bill)

Luckily my wheel jammed into the wheel well keeping everything off the ground, I managed to pull it over fairly quick, maybe about 50 ft.
I was only doing about 60KMPH, but I was 2 minutes from entering the hwy. That could have made things a lot worse. All in all, I'm pretty lucky it's not gonna cost more.

Yeah, It was my stock wheel. I had wheel spacers on (theres my first problem) although it was the jeep studs that failed, Not the spacer studs, it was still attached to the wheel.
So I could have saved some money and put the stockers back on with wheel spacers, But i'm not gonna take the chance of that happening again. So I went with aftermarket wheels with the proper backspacing.
One of these sets will be on my Jeep today, I didn't really care which ones showed up, so it's gonna be a surprise, He could tell that they were in the warehouse, but couldn't tell if they were all black, or black/machined.

My Jeep started up just fine but my non-heated garage is a bit warmer than outside. But I did leave my Jeep outside and it still started up fine..... at least from what it looked like inside the warm office using my remote starter LOL
