I know a LOT of you guys are not going to like this, but once I saw it I just had to get pics and post here.
This is a 1999-2001 Kia Carnival minivan with the beginnings of a TRUE murdered theme.(apologies to any blacked out rides, but true murdered is flat/satin paint AND blacked out trim)

I've said before, the Korean Domestic Market products they keep for themselves are not anything like the cars we know them for. Carnivals( Sedona in the USA), are usually diesel, AWD, manual shift, and really a very rugged machine. A good Korean friend of mine has a 2009 fully loaded diesel automatic, leather, TV's and the works, and it's a very capable ride. This one certainly looks modified. I've noticed a lot of modified diesels around lately, and the Drag Nationals they have near Seoul now have a diesel bracket.
I have to say, not bad for a mini-van. I'd sport it.
The (true)murdered theme is also catching on around here. I've recently seen an I30 hatchback done up in satin black.

Hate to bash on such a unique vehicle but I could appreciate a fast minivan if it had a little sleeper/under the radar look going on, this doesnt. The scoop/spoiler need to go and the side skirts look like they were crafted out of cardboard. imo of course.

Like I said, the scoop is stock and functional. I'm not particularly fond of spoilers on SUVs and vans myself, so I agree there, but the side skirts? Cardboard? Uhm... not really. It's a tighter kit than most of the ricer civics I see. At least this body kit is all the same color! I think the dirt/salt is messing with your perception.

Aaron, do you get the diesels? In the USA, we only get the gas engines. Almost every Hyundai or Kia I ride in here is diesel and way more powerful that what I'm used to from them in the states.

I would say about 90% of them are diesels here Ron. Most 4x4's or SUV's here tend to be diesel, because of gas prices. That said diesel is becoming more expensive too. Most diesels here have turbos. We have a Vauxhall Corsa van at work and I drove it down to Hereford once (about 400 mile trip) and that thing flew!! It was insanely quick for such a small car.

It's just boxy and flares out where it meets the fenders, doesn't blend into the vehicle is all i meant. Maybe toned down a notch or two and I could dig them a little more.

Not necessarily. The Carnival has a huge following here. There are clubs surrounding this and other vehicles(that would surprise you) to rival that of Civics and Eclipses. These are probably off-the-shelf projector/custom/halo/etc. headlights. You should see the Sonata headlights I've seen. VERY nice!

I must say again, I'm not trying to steal any thunder form the Blackout crowd, but calling a gloss black car murdered just isn't true. Blacked out cars look great, but the whole point of calling something murdered is the risk. Murder, in short, is the riskiest crime. How risky have you been if you can't bring yourself to mar the gloss black stock paint?

EXACTLY! I think of it this way; Do you "make" your style, or do you let your style make you? (Style being fashion, cars, gear, etc.). A real man secure in his identity can rock anything in style.
Besides, who decided minivans were for soccer moms and emasculated men anyway? The media? PFFFFFFT:p! Stop the conformity, please! My family had one of the first 1984 Dodge minivans on the block. By the time I could drive, that was the vehicle I had the keys to. I NEVER had any shortage of buds to cruise with, nor did we have ANY problems picking the girlies up in a van! Those rear seats got a LOT of play!
Back in high school, the single hottest ride I can remember anyone having was my buddy Blake with is GMC Safari. Custom yellow paint job and Chrome wheels. EVERYONE wanted one back then.

I've been toying with the idea of murkin' out my pos daily driver. It's paid off and it's a beater so I figure why not. I had a CF hood I bought off someone a few years back and it got weather and cracked so I decided this summer I was going to paint over it. I primed and sanded and once I saw it all flat black, I liked it. I've been debating on doing the whole car that way. Just don't feel like preppin the whole car but want to do it right if I do. She's got bumps and bruises anyways so might just say F it a do it when the weather finally gets nice and stays nice. No garage :(

Tony, what kind of car is your beater?
Most of the time, black amplifies dents and blemishes, but maybe flat or satin won't be so bad.

It matters a great deal. Murdered is risk-stock or gloss paint jobs are not. Flat and Satin finishes require a much different and more diligent maintenance routine to keep clean/fresh. Murder=death, nothing glossy about it.
Not to mention that when the phrase was "coined" in the automotive world, EVERY single car was flat or satin. It wasn't until very recently that I EVER heard of a gloss paint job being called murdered.
That's how it started out. The ONLY reason gloss black is being accepted as murdered is far too many modders are not ballsy enough to take the final NECESSARY step, so they all ban together and whine until gloss black is accepted.

lol. That was a bit of a rant, I guess. I obviously do though. Maybe because I am a huge fan of the theme, was there at the beginning, witnessed the evolution, and find it a little disturbing that someone would try to steal that thunder with a job half-done. I participated in Detroit area custom car shows for years. Murdered class was no gloss/chrome/polished aluminum. It was never disputed until recently.
Calling a gloss black car murdered, is like a gang-banger finding an already-dead body, popping a few caps in it, then claiming the hit for his street cred.

I know you're joking, and probably couldn't care less, but I', bored out of my mind at work(desk-warming season). Since blood is most often depicted as wet and shiny, I would say gloss is preferred. What I think is funny is, you having one of the first, and most prominent sanguinary rides out there, find yourself in the position to help define that style. I would honestly like to know your opinion.

Many of the old-time hot rodders (some of which featured regularly in the magazines of the time) that I hung out with during the first 20 years of my life, stopped at flat black primer thinking it looked really cool(and it did), Satin black paint was a natural progression as more guys wanted a bit more freedom driving their cars in inclement weather.

I like everything so far and the direction it seems you're going. Using the murdered theme as a template, does that necessarily call for body-colored trim? Rims? It's up to you at this point. While it's true 99% of rims outside of the "safe" colors (black, grey, silver or chrome, maybe white) look hideous, I've seen colored rims done right.
Maybe it's not necessary? Maybe it's enough to just eliminate the chrome/polished/silver bits?
Scottina06
01-27-2011, 06:30 PM
I see it as eliminating as much chrome as possible and replacing with the red/black. I think a TRUE bloodied would be all red....but I just cant do red headlights or red wheels...LOL. I am painting a new set of 5" tip black right now and my rear bumper chrome molding...that was black vinyled...will soon be painted RED. IMO....the headlights and tails should be the same color/palette....mine are blacked out. I thought of doing inferno red headlights and inferno red tinted tails....but it would be too much IMO. The finishing touch will happen this spring when i go ahead and remove the black vinyl on the roof and paint it pX8 black clearcoat. the underside of my new hood will be the same as my front molding and rear step...red kevlar carbon fibre. LOL>..as you can see my opinion of bloodied is ever evolving....

I would have jumped on that 4-5K price. Go to a proper, show-worthy-finish producing body shop, and you could easily see a price of double that quote, in flat, matte or gloss! I think the cheapest paint job West Coast Customs offers is 20-25K USD, but I'm not sure.
But, I also know a guy with a show/trophy winning car, and it was painted by Maaco of all places. He's even won best paint a few times. I think his total out-of-pocket cost was under $500.

Current Korean stuff is, as a general rule, getting VERY close to Japanese standards of build, fit, finish, and design.
However, NOTHING can change the fact that Korean garbage of this era (10+ years) is pretty appalling stuff, typical regurgitated old Japanese tooling from the mid 1980's, and as such, is WELL off the pace virtually everywhere.
Thems the facts :)

I know a LOT of you guys are not going to like this, but once I saw it I just had to get pics and post here.
This is a 1999-2001 Kia Carnival minivan with the beginnings of a TRUE murdered theme.(apologies to any blacked out rides, but true murdered is flat/satin paint AND blacked out trim)
http://i336.photobucket.com/albums/n344/vessel_photo/IMG_1763.jpg
The hood scoop is stock and functional, more importantly, so is that phat-azz intercooler taking up the front fascia!

I think i'd rather have the renault espace!

And your a good source considering your jeep is powered by a pushrod v8 engine designed in the 60s (JOKING, but seriously... still with the cam in block?) I wanna say Chrysler is the last manufacturer in the world still producing this ancient technology ha ha. And yet somehow they are still keeping up with all aluminum variable valve timed cam in head ford engines
Onto the murdered topic... years ago I saw a bmw M5 with a semigloss paint job, even the windows were semigloss (my assumption is a super dark tint and opaque film created this). the only gloss on it was a portion of the passanger and driver windows and the windshield. it was beautiful. If my memory serves me it was burried deep in a murdered thread on some honda forum and I havent been able to find it since... It was BEAUTIFUL!

Idk they didn't say. I did see, while searching for the car, a page or two about a film being placed on there that's matte. I was trying to imagine what it'd be like to look through it. Guess it'd be like constantly having really dirty windows.

haha, well, tell the millions of Chev "Generartion" engine fans that it's a shitter ;) Pushrod, cam in block too, though at least its alloy, unlike these bloody Hemis. Yes, they're ancient in design basics, but they're figures are still competetive ;)
Most Kia's (until recently) are running regurgitated old Mitsubishi engines from the 80's, which were never any good back then, and are no better now :D
