Today on my morning comute the jeep got stuck mometarily in a snow bank. I got out quickly of course, but after putting it in low gear, a bunch of horrible noises occured. Then I had no front wheel drive.
I have a 1998 5.9L , all wheel drive limited Grand Cherokee and I am curious how much I am looking at paying to fix up the jeep and or what could be the problem.

it's possible your transfer case didnt fully engage in 4 wheel low. My old grand would constantly pop the transfer case out of gear.
If i'm not mistaken, your 98 5.9 has the AWD, the NP 242 transfer case. I would try putting the transmission in neutral and moving that 4x4 shifter from 4 hi to neutral and back.
also, how do you know you lost front wheel drive? what are the symptoms?

It sounds like it just didnt fully ingage into 4 low and it got a 249 not 242 tc

Yes the 5.9 has the 249 TC. If you were shifting the TC and not moving you're gonna get some grinding. While going 5-10mph put the trans in neutral and shift the TC from 4hi to 4lo, you're still gonna get a little grinding it's just the way the gears are cut and the TC doesn't have syncros like a manual trans has. How do you know you don't have power to the front anymore? The noises you heard did they come from the middle of the jeep like where the TC is or did it sound like it came from the front end?

I have not problem getting mine into or out or 4lo, goes in and comes out nice and easy. I don't use 4lo but a couple times a year I shift it into 4lo just to make sure there's no issues. The vc is bad in mine but I have a 242 sitting in my basement that is going in in a few months.
