i always wanted to know why this was and i found a great read from Meguiars!!! i wanted to share with you guys! I also use the Hot Shine Tire Spray as recommended by Scotty boy!!!

From the FAQ here,

http://meguiars.com/faq/index.cfm?fa...ection=_59#_59 (http://meguiars.com/faq/index.cfm?faqCat=Wheels%20and%20Tires&faqQuestionID=59&section=_59#_59)

Most people don't give a lot of thought to their tires except for how they look. Truth be known, your tires are designed to perform under extreme conditions of heat via kinetic energy transfer, high speeds for long periods of time and incredible forces of torque and flexing. That's a lot to ask from a chunk of rubber, inflated with air like a cream filled donut.

The science behind the modern rubber formulas used by major tire manufactures today is both complex and interesting. The rubber itself contains and ingredient called Antiozonant.

Antiozonant is an ingredient that helps to prevent the exterior rubber surface from cracking, checking, oxidizing, and deteriorating. The rubber is designed in such a way as to constantly work its way to the outside of the tire and as such, continually replenish the exterior surface with fresh antiozonant.

After the antiozonant works its way to the outside of the tire and is exposed to the ozone in the air, it turns brown. The technical term for this effect is blooming.

This is why you see a brown film on the surface your tires. You can wash your tires with soap or an all-purpose cleaner and remove this film, but in a few weeks, it's back. That's because the antiozonant continually works its way to the outside of the tires every time you drive your car.

Thus before applying a dressing you really need to do a thorough job of cleaning the outer surface of the tire to remove any spent antiozonants as well as any previously applied dressing and this will prepare the rubber to accept a fresh application of tire dressing.

Meguiar's Tire Dressing Options
To maintain your tires and keep them looking sharp with a deep, dark black color, Meguiar's offers six unique tire dressings that treat the rubber with Meguiar's own special conditioning agents as well as patented antiozonants that replenish your tires' original antiozonants and keep your tires looking blacker longer than generic tire dressings and protectants.

Special polymers actually penetrate and cure to the surface to form a long lasting barrier-film that protects your tires from inclement weather and exposure to corrosive elements. These include:

Hot Shine Tire Spray (http://meguiars.com/?tire-care/Hot-Shine-Tire-Spray)(Trigger Spray) High gloss formula turns tires a dark black with high shine
Hot Shine delivers a high gloss shine in an aerosol or trigger application. Highly water-resistant polymers combined with antiozonant technology keep tires looking blacker longer, while preventing cracking, browning, and premature aging. The high gloss formula gives your tires a “wet-look” with a dark shine.

 So true!!

I clean my tires every two to three weeks with Megs Super Degreaser and it's amazing how much brown stuff comes off them. How much of that is off the tire dressing is another question tho.

When I used a gel type products (Megs Endurance Tire Gel, Chemical Guys New Look Trim Gel) I got loads, now with Zaino Z-16 it is reduced somewhat.

yeah that is a great question!!! im not familiar with z-16 but if it is sealing the rubber it might be keeping the antiozonants from coming out. again i have no experience with z-16

I've never seen a tire turn brown......

so you're saying you've never washed your tire wall and have brown stuff come off the tires? if you don't wash your tires or put protection on your tires they will turn brown. i was curious to know what that brown liquid was.

I was going to say the brown stuff is MUD.

hehe def not mud:) maybe its from the cowbell noise:)

Do you also have this as a shirt?

So are you saying we should or shouldn't use degreaser or cleaner to get rid of the brown stuff?

B.P.O.D
08-13-2009, 08:24 AM
no you are suppose to, i was curious to know why that brown stuff turns up. its actually antiozonants coming out of your tire. the process is known as blooming

Ok so what's good to clean that stuff off with?

lots of things! i usually use carwash with a tire brush, you could use Westley's Bleach White or meguiar's apc diluted, or any degreaser, make sure you put something on afterwards like this afterwards bc it helps heal the tire:)

you can use the bleach white for the whole tire wall if you want. aftewards just use carwash again to get any stuff left on there still off.

I've definitely seen tires turn brown. Just thought it was road grime or dry rot. I use that Westley stuff on my company truck to get the brown off. My Jeeps get tire treatment so I don't see it on the Jeeps.

I'm glad I caught this thread. Now I know.

So, we can concur this phenomenon by using a chemical (i.e. Hot Shine) on the sidewall... well, a tire has a sidewall on the outside and a sidewall on the inside, do you guys frequently remove your wheels to apply Hot Shine to the inner sidewall? Is there even an advantage to applying only one side of the sidewall?

you really . . . don't want to remove your tires just for a silly coating. Removing the tire requires heavy duty machines and a shop will have to remove the tire and no matter how long it takes their gonna charge a base fee.

I just looked at the back side of my tires and they arent brown....

I think this is an urban legend.....LOL

I was referring to outer and inner as in one side wall (outer side of the tire) and the other sidewall (outer side of the tire). Like one sidewall has outlined raised white lettering and the other side just has black. Removing the wheel would be required to do this... not the tire.

The tires on our Saturn at home turn brown when not washed/shined up for a while. Next time I'll take some pics. Doesn't look like a dirty tire kinda brown. You definitely know it's the tire itself. Maybe it's a manufacturing thing.,I've gone alot longer with no tire cleaning/shine on my Jeep and never noticed this happen.
