Im looking to purchase a muffler in the near future for my 3.7, anyone have any experience with Gibson? Or any other mufflers that are not obnoxious? Thanks

I have a flowmaster muffler.

WSP Jeep
08-13-2009, 06:29 AM
Which flowmaster are you running? Does it drone on the highway? How loud during city driving? Thanks

LO.7
08-13-2009, 06:57 AM
Flowmaster 40 series. Doesn't really drone at highway speeds, but does at lower rpm's.. Really depends how loud you want it. I like my exhaust obnoxiously loud, so it works for me.

08-13-2009, 11:10 AM
Try a Magnaflow, Or buy my exhaust thats for sale in the for sale section. It would sounds great i bet and prolly wont drone, My flowmasters always droned but this setup does not drone at all on my 4.7 and would look sick for a 3.7.

WSP Jeep
08-13-2009, 11:42 AM
Had a bad experience with magnaflow's on my accord V6 and would rather go other routes i.e. Gibson, Powerstick, Flowmaster, Edlebrock SDT. Thanks though and keep the comments coming. Cant wait to hear the powerstick.

I have the Magnaflow SS catback on my 3.7 and I like it. It sounds throaty on take off but quiet coasting and on highways. I dont have any sound clips, but it sounds just like the clip of the one on the magnaflow web site. I'll try and find it. I actually want one of my friends to swap cars so i can follow and actually hear what it sounds like driving, ive only heard it when my cousin took it for a few passes so i could hear.

But looking back and what I know now, I think I would buy Corsa because I like the ones Ive heard and have pipes bent up at a shop, instead I went the easy route and bought one complete. Now i someone put the idea in my head to get the srt exhaust which sounds great to me.

WSP Jeep

Wow, there has to be atleast person out there who owns a 3.7 with a good sounding universal muffler.

Scottina06
11-12-2009, 07:53 PM
do NO muffler and add a resonator! It will sound badass....(you can thank me later)

WSP Jeep
11-12-2009, 08:42 PM
Eh, Id rather be able to have a conversation on the highway.... Im looking for something with minimal drone if possible.

B.P.O.D
11-12-2009, 08:46 PM
i put a magnaflow round muffler in and it's loud but i can still hear on the highway.
i would try what scott is saying bc timmy's with 2 resonator's and no muffler sounds sick!!! i do like mine though but it might be too loud for you.

JeepKid
11-12-2009, 08:51 PM

I referred Irfan to the Magnaflow round case Part no. 10436, which is a 4x22. He seems to like it, but it is an aggressive muffler. I'd recommend something like a 6x18 or 6x22 round, since you're looking for something a bit tamer.

I initially had a mixed opinion on Magnaflow when I ran a 5x8x18 oval case (common design ), I went to a different muffler and wouldnt run anything else.

B.P.O.D
11-12-2009, 09:28 PM
^^^ yup great advise from ryan:)

Chris
11-12-2009, 09:31 PM
whats the difference between the round and oval style mufflers? sound, performance, same thing?

FlyinRyan
11-12-2009, 09:39 PM
sound, fitment, I took .35 off my 1/4 mile time going from a 2.5" catted Magnaflow oval case to a catless 3" round case.

Scottina06
11-12-2009, 11:06 PM
Eh, Id rather be able to have a conversation on the highway.... Im looking for something with minimal drone if possible.

you will have 0 drone with a resonator and tons of drone with a muffler and no resonator

Scottina06
11-12-2009, 11:08 PM
whats your drone like Irf....and dont lie?????? LOL I can tell by the sound of it you have drone on the highway

B.P.O.D
11-13-2009, 07:10 AM
with the round 4" muffler i have drone up to 2.5k!!! that is local and highway driving. i have adapted my driving to try to minimize that as much as possible but the drone is there from when you give it gas to 2.5k:( oh well still sounds good to me:)

WSP Jeep
11-13-2009, 07:24 AM
you will have 0 drone with a resonator and tons of drone with a muffler and no resonator

Did you mean zero drone with two resonators? and tons of drone with a aftermarket muffler plus the stock resonator? Thanks

B.P.O.D
11-13-2009, 07:45 AM
there will be drone with an aftermarket muffler only. how much you get depends on which one you get!

to have the srt exhaust (2 res only) you have to axe your stock muffler and your spare tire and a hitch:(

FlyinRyan
11-13-2009, 07:55 AM
One thing that has to be kept in mind is that drone is a byproduct of not only muffler design, but placement as well. Same thing with exhaust hangars.

Dynamat can be used to help minimize resonance in the cabin. It'll also help take out some of the road noise as well.

B.P.O.D
11-13-2009, 07:57 AM
yeah come spring time i plan on taking out my seats and adding dampening material to lower the noise:)

Scottina06
11-13-2009, 01:44 PM
I dont mean to add the SRT exhaust. I mean just add a resonator somewhere close to the end of the exhaust and it will cut down on the drone

B.P.O.D
11-13-2009, 01:51 PM
so you're saying to add a resonator to my current piping?

Scottina06
11-13-2009, 01:57 PM
yes.... and lose the muffler and it will sound similar to Timmys. But I think yours sound great already. BUT...one thing I hate...hate is drone. So if it doesnt bother you...I wouldnt bother

Robert Palmer

B.P.O.D

hahaha could be... my mom also stated it who knows... lets say "if" i did replace my magnaflow muffler with the resonator, would that cause me to loose any hp that i gained with my magnaflow muffler, butt hp that is:)

Scottina06

I would love to see the dyno backed claims that a single muffler, added to a stock exhaust adds hp.......I'm just so skepticasl i guess??????

blackpepper
11-13-2009, 02:23 PM
It may add 1 or 2 hp at most to the wheels.. a resonator is usually glass packed with straight pipe running through the middle of it.. it's insulated piping in a can.. so you shouldn't lose any hp from having a reso..

B.P.O.D
11-13-2009, 02:27 PM
so why does the muffler add hp??? im confused:(

blackpepper
11-13-2009, 02:34 PM
Depending on the muffler it may increase the hp a little but not a lot unless you do the whole exhaust system. As far as loud goes, you are inside you won't notice the noise much and if you can increase the hp you are using less power to drive the car so you could see a slight increase in mileage also.

Basically from my research online is a muffler alone wont do much in terms of performance and gains will be minimal if any, but instead get it purely for a different exhaust tone.

TimmyB
11-13-2009, 04:57 PM
Well I was just saying that because of all the misleading ads out there for aftermarket mufflers adding huge amounts of HP and all that crap.

Me, im mostly all for looks and sound. I know I have a tiny 3.7 and I got it because of that fact its a six banger and I was tired of the high gas prices with my previous V8 GC's. If I really wanted a high HP car I would of gone with the Hemi, but I dont tow or go offroading or even drive like a nut anymore, so my little V6 does me just fine on the highway. Plus no one would really guess I only had a V6 with how it looks now, just yestarday I had a Mustang Cobra pull up right beside me on the highway wanting to race me. I actually would of at least tried if my exit wasnt right there and I was getting off. I get that alot, I notice people pulling up right beside me staring at me to race them. Maybe they think I have an srt for some reason, or at least something done to my engine which I dont at all. Lol

Irfan's on the other hand sounds like shit.

In my opinion, you don't put a race muffler on a 3.7, that's just begging to sound like a ricer.

I am thinking of becoming a guinea pig and picking up a flowmaster muffler for shits and seeing what that sounds like, only problem is there is SO many flowmaster types to choose from, what would likley sound best? 50 series, SUV ones, ???

GCL06
01-26-2010, 06:49 PM
I'm partial to the 50 series.

WSP Jeep
01-26-2010, 08:22 PM
I think the 50 series would sound great on a 3.7. I have heard them on libertys and they sound awesome. I just want to know how bad they drone.

B.P.O.D
01-27-2010, 10:43 AM
if you do a search you can search for "geevis" here . he has a flowmaster. sounds very similar to my magnaflow.... its very hard to get a deep rumble with our v6's... its gonna sound a little ricer no matter what... i like it... as long as you like it that's all that matters...

joe - since we're being honest, i thought ur exhaust on ur 5.7 sounded like complete chit w/o a resinator and sounded like a garbage truck in 1st gear . IMO

Ok, so I got my Gibson installed today and it sounds great, but may be a tad bit to loud for me. It honestly sounds like a small V8 when it starts up, there is just a slight rumble at idle and its not much louder than stock, when your moving you can tell its there through all gears except 5th where it becomes alot quieter (no highway driving yet). Ill post a video in an hour or so...

I dont have a 3.7, I have a 4.7 but a few months ago I put an 18in Magnaflow on and a K&N intake, it made a huge difference in sound, it sounds awesome when I get on it, it doesnt have the "truck sound" its more of a muscle car sound. I dont have a resonator, we didnt have them on 05's and I do get some drone right at 2k but its nothing bad and I would recomend the setup to anyone. Using autostick will let you get even more sound out of it.

My bad guys, I took a video then my buddies girlfriend borrowed the camera before I could upload it. Should have it back tonight...

On a side note, the muffler is too loud for me around the 2000-3500 rpm range, it drones badly in the cabin. At idle it sounds awesome and at higher Rpm's it sounds pretty good. I think I am going to buy a large magnaflow resonator (18" or 22") and see if I can cancel most of the sound out.
My mpg's have gone up about 2 on the highway and about 1 around town. Throttle response was also improved.

AcidCold

A 50 series SUV or 70 series big block in 2.5'' in and out will sound good, not annoying at all since those models are designed with delta flow tech and will have a nice mellow tone. Ideal for a v6.

It seems quiet to me, maybe its just the video though. my Magnaflow catback seemed louder on video, and I did not have any drone, at least I didnt hear any because I think of all the soundproofing I did to my car. I did a decent stereo system and went a little overboard with the peel n stick membrane in the doors and cargo floor and used that canned spray foam to fill the cargo door frame and inside of the rear fenders. Is drone caused by the exhaust coming out the tips?

WSP Jeep
03-02-2010, 06:12 PM
Its only gets loud when the rpm's are around 2000-3000k and when the engine is under stress (hills, sudden acceleration) and yes it seems like the drone is coming mostly from the rear. Ive thought about sound proofing it, just dont want to bother.

Im contemplating pulling the gibson off and going back to stock, but I really dont want to loose the gas milage that Ive gained. I just cant pull the trigger to purchase a 12" resonator and have it installed only for it to still drone.

Is the Gibson really most quiet aftermarket muffler?

Which the Gibson PN?

WSP Jeep

The Magnaflow is probably quieter than the Gibson if I had to judge based on my personal experience with the Gibson and how quiet the magnaflow sounds on video.

well depends on which magnaflow your looking to get.... stay away from the round exhausts if you want quiet... get the 5x11 oval

Theres nothing wrong with the round mufflers, but they have to be sized properly.

I talked with a Magnaflow rep a while back asking them about muffler dimensions and how they affect drone. The rep said that typically the width of the casing will play a important role in resonance and overall sound levels.

That being said, the 5x8x18 or 5x11x22 is probably a safe bet, but I just wanted to dispel the myth going around that round mufflers will automatically make your ears bleed.

Looking for not loud muffler for 3.7 :) I was read this thread carefully

Is the Gibson really most quiet aftermarket muffler?

Which the Gibson PN?

When I had my Magnaflow full catback exhaust with the 12"X22" oval muffler on before I can tell you it was "louder" than stock obviously when getting on the throttle, but cruising it was hardly noticable. From what you write I think you would be happy with a larger magnaflow straight thru muffler. It will not be loud so that your getting pulled over for it, if anything it gave the exhaust a nice tone to it taking off.

Even right now I have no muffler with the dual srt resinators and tailpipes and its not that loud compaired to my cousins Tundra V8 with just a Flowmaster muffler in it.

So I had a 14" glasspack installed and the results were well worth the money. Highway and cruising drone is almost completely gone and the overall sound of the muffler was reduced by about 60%. Its still just a too tad loud for me when acclerating, but its much more tolerable. The weird thing is it seems like the Jeep is running better, maybe more back pressure?

Has anyone thrown a flowmaster on a 3.7 yet? I've been checking out the clips of you guys with magnaflows, and to be honest they sound a little ricey? Maybe that's not the correct term, but it sounds like a sporty car and not a SUV. I have dual magnaflows on my 4cyl mazda6 and they sound pretty much the same as some of these clips.. and I don't want my jeep to sound like my mazda, lol!

Anyone know of the technical name for the exhaust flange that connects the muffler to the cat converters?

I am looking to make my own exhaust. I want it to be bolt in and still be able to put the factory muffler back if I don.t like the sound.

Is this it?

I would check out the hooker Aerochamber line of mufflers. They sounded great on the 3.4 V6 I had in my 94 Firebird. They are a great hybrid between the straight through muffler like a magnaflow or borla and a chambered muffler like a flowmaster. I can tell you that I also LOVE the small bodied Borla that I have on my 4.0 GC. I am trying to get some video of it soon.

Hope this helps.

I have the same thing...I have a 14" Dynomax. I could have gone bigger, but plan on using a E-cutout. Sounds awesome at idle and very low speeds in the hood.

bump for GCL06s setup, I have the same Thursh muffler which is made by Dynomax I believe or they are related somehow. The comparable mufflers from Thrush are about 1/5th the price of the dynomax and give just as good of an exhaust tone and performance gains are equal as they both flow considerably more. I love it with the stock SRT8 resonators in place to eliminate that terrible drone.

Any V6 w/ a smaller oval style muffler will be loud/decent at lows rpms but any acceleration and they sound like any hondas w/ a fart can :( The resonators help dull that down and lower the tone all the way through the power band, so bump for SRT resos being sweet, they really complete the system :)

Correct. I've got the Thrush and still no resonator. I like it loud though and haven't ever had any other sort of exhaust system as the Jeep was my first vehicle (I say was but I still own it, just added a Blazer to the mix) so I can't compare the drone to anything else. I went with the MF#12286 and added a 3" rolled tip on the end. I wasn't sure I was going to like the tone with the tip added but it may just be me or the sound seems to have calmed down a bit after the first 500k on it.

Ended up looking very similar to the MF catback system on the 5.7. Sound is a nice low tone and not overpowering even on WOT. When I get a moment i will video it and add a link.

that vid had been shot the same night i installed the exhausts, now it even sounds Deeper and a bit louder, as if its a small block v8 at idle. It even gets more deeper as you cruize up the rpm range till 3,500 Rpm or so, after that the small displacement can be felt, but overall the sound is awesome, and the jeep is more awake.

i am so happy with the results. The wall bounce off thing, it sounds the same also without the wall .... the phone cam doesn't do justice

Sounds amazing Hamze..

Thank you brother! trust me, they sound way better in person, i got a new cam-corder, i will post some vids soon when i have time to catch a drive by vid, and some in-car vids....

it really sounds like a '' small block v8 '' at idle, People think its a V8!! it has a LOW deep tone when u cruise... and its not ricey!!. I used the biggest free flow magnaflow exhaust i can place at the middle to filter the tone as much as possible, and a small magnaflow at the rear to eliminate the drone, ( its also free flow, and not restrictive as a resonator!!! ) all tubing kept to a 2.5' front to back, + i deleted the cats and used anti-foulers.... It worked like magic.. + ZERO air flow restriction to release all trapped horses... I can feal the difference.

This is the setup i recommend, trust me, i take my time and do lots of research before i take any step... it went right from the first time :)

^^^Looks like a dangerous street to be speeding on, lol.

Sounds good, though maybe its my horrible hearing but to me it kinda sounds like a honda civic.dunno. someone owns an SRT8 near my office and I have no idea what they have for an exhaust but it rumbles the building when they drive by, it sounds like a muscle car.

lol! its just a 3.7 Liter bro! at high RPM's the small displacement will show.... when i cruise in my jeep, my rpm's never do exceed 3000 Max ... i like the sound at low rpm's. the camera doesnt show the Low DB's , no justice...

I have a 3.7 and deleted the muffler and just have the two rear SRT resinators, and one shop put a big REJECTION sticker on. When I asked why he said I must have an exhaust leak because it sounds louder than stock. I told him its a bolt on exhaust from the srt trying to claim the resinators were mufflers and its supposed to sound that way. But he was a dick about it anyways. So I drove on over to another shop in a seedy neighboring city owned by some Asian hacks. It was almost closing time and he told me to come back tomorrow, so I told him I can't drive around with a rejection sticker, where he asked me what I got it for, so I told him it was because my brake lights failed and I just had them fixed. The kid drove my car in the bay and only checked the brake lights, which were always fine anyways, and he slapped a sticker on it.

Guess my long story short, go get it inspected at a hack shop where they install loud aftermarket exhausts and lower cars by cutting the springs. Lol

I hear ya. I tried to video the sound of this SRT setup I have, and it def sounds alot better in person than reproduced through a camera then the sound coming out computer speakers, or in my case I just listened to your clips on my cell phone.

I would luv to remove my cats, but in no way would I pass inspection where I live.

Thank you for posting it Hamze. Sounds awesome man… Maybe a little to loud for me tho. I just wonder if I should add the magnaflow 12586 as a muffler then, SRT8 resos and tips at the end. it might work well for me. We'll see.

the smaller they are the louder they are! you want to go for oval shape and not round bc they are louder

hella_wk
02-09-2011, 01:11 PM
only thing im worried about is that the 18 inch wont be loud enough.... lol :D
the ones i posted links too wwould be considered oval right??

So what's the verdict fellas.....which is the best exhaust setup for the 3.7?
I think Nick's Thrush muffler or Hamze's dual muffler sounded the best of all the once i've heard....just my preference.

Here is Joe's old setup. OEM SRT exaust with Gibson muffler and resos deleted. My local shop guy said it would be easier and cheaper to simply close one of the inlets instead of Y-piping it so we did.

The camera doesn't catch the full deep sound of the idle I will get a better vid up by tomorrow. This thing is loud. I will get pics up of the setup soon as the slush is off the ground lol.

Alright attempt number 2 ! This time you can actually hear the kitten purr. Lol. The first rev was like to 1.5 and the second was a little over 2k. Lemme know what you guys think. I'm going to need some resos cuz the drone is pretty severe. Sorry for camera movement I suck with cameras.

THE MAGNAFLOW (12256) 5x8x18!!! is no doubt the best universal muffler for a 3.7! just got mine installed yesterday at a local shop. i couldnt be anymore satisfied! paid about 150 installed..

i first installed a flowmaster 40 series about a month ago, and i wont lie i hated it.. the sound was not appealing, so i took it off and thought i'd do without... gave magnaflow a try because i heard something about better gas mileage and more power because its a free flowing muffler.. turns out alot of this seems to be true! only thing is, dont get a chambered or (turbo) one they are cheaper and are basically the same thing as a flowmaster. or in other-words, not a free flowing muffler. i found this out after doing some research on their website.

ill try to get a sound clip up this weekend!
i couldnt believe how much deeper/cleaner the magnaflow sounded

Why were you not happy with your Flowmaster? I was thinking about getting a Flowmaster Super 44 but I'm still researching.

I want the closest thing I can get to that V8 sound and the Flowmaster I've been told is the best for that. Do Magnaflows not sound a bit ricier?

To say the least i wasn't happy at all, it sounded like a fat can, dinosaur old muffler and had way to much drone (and i typically dont mind drone). So if you want it to sound clean get a magnaflow like mine (got it on amazon for $80 or $90 shipped) and the part number is in my signature. i love it!! and its gotten louder and deeper in the 8 months that ive had it.
NOT RICEY AT ALL!
