OK, so thanks to the help of Matt and a lot of others, I have started my stereo build. I have come a long ways over the last two days...I have included pics below, with a lot more to come as I am probably only half way. I have everything except the sub (hahaha), takes a week to build :) I have pics of my in-hand products below (went with a Monster 2 gauge amp kit, sundown 1000 amp, 1.0 c/ft box and C2A-CHY3).

I have ran the wires for the remote bass knob, 2 gauge power and remote turn-on. I will run the RCA's on the passenger side of the vehicle tomorrow, along with finish ground for amp and install C2A adapter. I need to take some more pics, but I am happy with my progress so far...considering a total of 4 hours after work drinking beers and doing this for the second time (first on my Jeep)!!!

Any tips/tricks are appreciated for taking off the navi/bezel for radio access. I have the printouts from wkjeeps.com (what a cool resource:D) so it may be all I need...first time for everything. Also ask any questions you want, I am learning a lot about her!!!!!

Awesome progress so far Brad!! Looks like professionally work!

As for removing the radio bezel.. pretty much follow the wkjeeps.com directions - just go slow and don't force anything. Once you have the bezel off I'd recommend removing the radio entirely (it's only 3 plugs if I remember correctly), this will make working with the PAC adapter and RCA's a lot easier with an empty cavity.

You are well on your way my friend, almost all of the hard work is already behind you (running the RCA's can be sort of a pain, but I had 3 sets when I was running mine and they were thick so you'll probably have better luck).

Keep the pics coming!

EZY - Thank you...I can't wait to have some bumps! I will def have more pics and hopefully I will get the sub soon to finish up

Kyle - You gave me the idea for the bass knob! Thank you

Matt - Can't wait till I get to hear this combo! Should be a space-saving beast!!! Thanks again for your help and guidance!!

No problem at all. That setup is going to pound!

Remember to set your gain properly since you are installing a remote bass knob.

Directions:

Car/stereo off - everything 100% installed/connected

Turn the remote bass knob gain all the way up
Turn gain on amplifier all the way down
Be sure all the settings on the radio are flat (bass/mid/treb set to 0)
Turn the bass boost to 0
Set the subsonic filter to ~25hz
Set the low-pass crossover to ~60-80hz, don't go higher than 100hz. Between 60 and 80 should be ideal.

Now, turn the car/stereo on

Put a familiar CD with a decent amount of low hz (bass) activity... most likely rap.
Turn the radio volume up as high as you usually go (take it to the point where the factory speakers start to show signs of stress or fatigue)
Now turn the volume down a few units... remember this # as once you are done setting your amplifier gain you will never want to take the volume past this #.
With your stereo blasting, your bass knob turned to its max, go to the amplifier and slowly turn the gain up... continue to turn it up until the sub seems to be stressed or to the point of distortion.
Now come back slightly on the gain and keep the gain there. Keep in mind your gain on the amp may barely be cracked, that's fine (and preferred).
Pop in some more test CD's that stress heavily on bass... if there are any points where the sub seems to bottom out or distort, go back and turn the gain down slightly.

Now, everything on the amplifier is set except for the phase. Phase adjustment is equivalent to switching the positive and negative wires for the sub at the amplifier (obviously you'll use the switch on the amp). Play around with this... this will essentially change when the sub will "hit" by milliseconds. Try it at "0" and "180" (180 = reverse phase). One will sound better than the other (for me, my phase is reversed on my sub).

Now that your amp setup is 100% complete, you can go back to the radio and make bass/mid/treb adjustments as you see fit. Don't go crazy with the bass setting though, mine is set to 0 and that is plenty, I'm sure you'll find the same. Try this;

Bass: 0
Mid: -2
Treb: +3

Balance: right 2 units
Fade: front 2 units

That should sound pretty good, but again, it's what sounds best to you that matters.

Also, since you set your gains with the knob all the way up, you won't risk sending a clipped signal to your sub if you decide to crank the bass via the bass knob.

After that you should be all set... happy listening!!

EXCELLENT INFO MATT! I had no idea there was that much involved in setting up the gain LOL I have always had the shop's do it during install. (atleast I hope they did :p )

why 2 notches to the right for balance?

Because the driver seat is not centered relative to the speakers, so this will usually center the sound stage for the driver. The passenger, not so much, lol.

EXCELLENT INFO MATT! I had no idea there was that much involved in setting up the gain LOL I have always had the shop's do it during install. (atleast I hope they did :p )

It's a very important part of the installation process that should not be brushed off in the interest of preserving and protecting your equipment; especially when a gain knob is added to the process. Most guys will simply set the gain (properly or improperly) and then add the knob after the fact and once they go to turn that knob past zero you introduce the likely possibility of clipping the signal being sent to your $250 sub and... kaboom! Time for a new sub, lol... don't want that.

haha, I appreciate the kindness.

My brother and I are taking a road trip out west, thinking of hitting Pikes Peak and Yellowstone... probably not any further due to financial reasons, lol, but my calculations put us at about 2 weeks total. Should be a good time.

I'll try to check the Garage every few days or so, just to make sure you didn't screw anything up, hehe. I'll look forward to final install pics and reaction when I get back

Alright I finished her up last night...WOW!!! Sounds great, the stock BA speakers really needed a little bass, well actually A LOT of bass!!! Took about 5 hours last night to finish up, so total of 9 hours spread over 3 days. I think that if you have all of the parts (I didn't hence over 3 days) it can be done in 6 hours by yourself, and maybe even 4 if you have taken the interior apart before. Please ask any questions as I did a lot of research and did encounter a couple things that may help someone. Here are the finished pics; I will post one of the amp in the cargo later...I cannot decide how I want it to sit!!!

Ran RCA on passenger side...you DO NOT need to remove the rear passenger pannel, only separate enough to get the wire behind it

http://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu174/bradsmith42/DSC00886.jpg

It is a tight fit with the adapter...there is a ledge above the radio, this is where I tucked the P2A adapter so the NAVI fit back in the the additional wires/adapter

K Matt...after a couple hours messing with the EQ, these are the settings that sound the best (VERY CLOSE to the settings you posted... coincidence? I think not, thanks ) Reverse phase for me as well. The LPF and subsonic were within the ranges you said. I posted a little video with a little Too Short! I know I know the amp is crooked, it is the best way for it to fit in there as I did not want to run the power wires to the passenger side. I put velcro under the sub box, sticks to the rubber mat perfectly and adheres to the box...pull it in and out in 3 seconds! I did not secure the amp in the cargo box. I put chair/furniture pads in all four corners, and with the way the cables are it does not move (my cargo plastic is warped inward so it holds it in place as well). This is a great combo Matt as I only have the gain turned half way up, and when I go full gain and 26 volume there is no distortion! Sundown Amp 1000 Watts and SSAIcon 10" = FTMFW :D:D:D:D

Yeah I added a layer all around before I put the sub in...I actually had to cut 12 notches/groves into the box for the sub to fit. I thought it was a right fitment per measurements online, Nope!

So I Techflexed the power wire under the hood. What do you think?

Thanks Kyle...I saw that Matt used it on his ride and I had to order some. I got 25ft on ebay for $8 shipped from Tenessee. Super easy to put on, only problem is the ends will fray after you cut them if you spread them out with wires...once you cut it put elec tape around freshly cut ends and you are golden. Looks good and will protect a little just in case. Let me knwo if you need the link from eBay where I got the stuff :)

Looks great!!. Im still doing my system, its up and running and now soundproofing the car. I did blow one of my JL XR mids in the drivers door somehow, so just bought a new set so I can have some spare componants in case. For my sub box I screwed a hook eye in the back then put a hook from it to the tie down hooks on the back of the rear seat, to keep it from smashing around everywhere.

Did you happen to buy from eBay store Furryletters? Super nice guy, top notch service, easily the lowest prices ever!!

Whenever I cut one piece I just used a lighter to seam the fray (like a rope) - either way works.

damn bro my bad a stereo guru asks me a question and I don't have the decency to answer...I am fairly happy with the current speakers (stock BA's) but i am sure in about a year I am going to want to add another amp

yes I am having some vibrations in the rear cargo area...and maybe in the rear passenger seatbelt housing. I expected it. In all honesty, how long would it take to do the entire car with dynamat or equivalent?

Here are a couple pics...I finally took your idea and followed through - I drilled 4 holes in the plastic cargo area and secured my amp :slapfight:  I should have taken care of that a long time ago. I also got it to sit square in there and dialed all the wires in

C2A-CHY3 PAC adapter

Question about this. I have the iPAC-CHY. It is from Pacific Accessory Corportation. It is an Ipod and auxillary Audio input for the REC, RAQ, and RAK radios. I have the REC radio and whenever I use the Ipod connection I have to use VES. I haven't used the Aux inputs but I'm guessing this would be using VES too? Is this what I need?

I have never done any sound system before and know little about them. The RCA goes from the amp to the head unit? or from the sub to the head unit?

Any audio question you have talk to username (Matt) he is an audio genius and has been my audio advisor. He knows his shit and well give you good solid honest info and facts. He's one ov the best JG has when it comes to car audio.

The RCA goes from the amp to the head unit? or from the sub to the head unit?

the PAC I have is for my RER headunit...it provides me with 2 RCA outputs so I can add an amp (ie sub amp, or 4ch amp)...I bought this adapter in case I want to add a 4ch amp later for my door speakers.

the adapter you have is for adding an iPod to your existing REC HU...it gives you the input to the HU so you can play the iPod through the stock setup. (I do not have one of these, but I am 99% that is what it does)

The RCA outputs (created by the PAC adapter) are run to the amps inputs...they give the sound to the amp, which in turn powers the sub. does that help at all? HAHA

I have a question, is a big mistake to go with a box thats slightly bigger than optimum specs? Im thinking of going with 2 SSA Icons 10's in a sealed prefab box but the box is slightly bigger (2.12 cu ft. when a single 10 requires .9 cu ft).

just saw your question Chuck...from what I remember there is some truth to more air space = more bass...but Matt explained it to me in detail you want to be as close to optimal as possible (I think he gave me the comparision of changing tire size/diameter on your car, want it to be as close as possible or you will need to recalibrate the odometer). Does the 2.12 cuft include the net displacement for the subs? If not, you may be right-on with the 2.12 as I believe my SSA Icon was a .1 or .2 cutf displacement (meaning I bought a 1.0 cuft box, and minus the .1 for the sub, it got me to optimal specs). And the space will in-turn change how you will set all of your amps controls (gains, LPF, bass boost etc). Hope that helps

Do you have a picture of the power wire going through the firewall? I took a quick look the other day and I didn't see a good spot to route it through. I'd appreciate it, Thanks!

While I don't have pictures of mine in progress (as it is done and didn't think of it at the time) I will post pictures of the fibre box that I built to spec of the JBL stealth box.

Will take some pictures of it installed (along with the amp and bass knob) and post. Tonnes of great sound (running a JBL sub) and no space lost

If you pull back the carpet under the driver side, behind the footrest foam block, there is a black plug. I popped that out and was able to run my 0 gauge wire through there. Wasn't hard at all to do.

Installing a system in my Jeep was not hard at all. Just takes some time and patience. Hardest part is running the wires around the seats by the doors, other than that is was simple. I wish I would have take the time to stop every so often and take a few pictures, but of course I didn't. I've done a handful of my buddies cars as well, if have any questions about anything stereo related just ask. If I don't have an answer, I'll find one for you.

Wow sorry everyone but for the Zombie digger response, but yes this does help a lot thank you lol. After almost a year from your response I am finally picking up a subwoofer this Saturday from Devlin.

Maybe I need to do some more research but I'm using your writeup as a basis for the wiring, amp, and that bass knob. The only thing I'm still unclear about is do I need that extra adapter for my REC headunit? I'm pretty sure I've heard about something that goes from your rear speaker or to your amp? Maybe I need to keep searching for information.

you are referring to a LOC = Line Output Converter (it intercepts the signal from any speaker wire and sends signal to head unit). With a PAC adapter, you do not need a LOC (one or the other, and from my research PAC is def the way to go).

Engine Bay:
2 gauge power wire through firewall (05-07 easier than 08+)

Drivers side wires:
2 gauge power wire
Remote turn-on lead for amp (power on/off, through PAC)
Bass-knob controller (phone wire)

Passenger side:
RCA(s) ONLY - I guess there can be interferrence from the power wire...PITA but I have not had any signal issues and again ALL research said to do this

That help? And no more of this next year crap...get er done haha

Thank you man! Very helpful. Let me find that +rep button after I post this.

It looks like the only thing I'm gonna have to figure out is if I can run that PAC adapter with my pre-existing ipod adapter back there. It would suck if I couldn't use my ipod with my new system. And it will definitely be within the next couple of weeks! Can't wait to get this thing together finally!

no prob...keep us posted. IIRC there should be no prob running the ipod interface with the PAC, but not 100%...I think Nate has that setup...

where is the cheapest place to get the ipod interface cable? anyone?

It's all in what you like man! Enjoy that sub!!

^^ The audiobahn is a duplicate I have had for 8 years...bought a $30 box and some wire and hooked it up...just to mix it up, cause for a 15" it really is not that great, but gets the job done a little differently than the SSA

no matter what door speakers you put in, they will never reproduce the low notes that a sub reproduces. so you will always be missing some of your music. you don't have to put monster subs that can be heard 10 miles away. just put a nice 8 or 10 in there and you will hear a huge difference.

08Hemi
07-06-2011, 11:38 AM
well IDK what it is about my system, but you cannot hear it from very far away...but when you are inside it is almost uncomfortable with the volume over 22 and the sub 1/2 way up

All I care about my systems is how they sound to me where I am listening to them...could care less if others can hear me haha

I have ran the wires for the remote bass knob, 2 gauge power and remote turn-on. I will run the RCA's on the passenger side of the vehicle tomorrow, along with finish ground for amp and install C2A adapter. I need to take some more pics, but I am happy with my progress so far...considering a total of 4 hours after work drinking beers and doing this for the second time I think that if you have all of the parts (I didn't hence over 3 days) it can be done in 6 hours by yourself, and maybe even 4 if you have taken the interior apart before.

08Hemi
07-07-2011, 02:10 PM
^^ I totally agree...with all parts I could do start to finish in less than 5 hours. First time took a total of 8 hours over 2 days :( Congrats on the install and post up some pics when you get a chance :)

I was wondering if you could help me out. I was told i needed a double din radio, nav bezel, mounting kit, antenna adapter, and scosche adapter.

I went ahead and purchased a Pioneer AVH-P4200DVD, NAV Bezel, Antenna Adapter, Mounting Kit, and the Scosche CR03SR wiring harness. I also purchased the Sirius radio package for Pioneer and the iPod cable.

I currently have an 06 GC LTD with the base radio, non nav.

Is there anything else i may need?

Installation instructions??

I have seen many threads relating to this install, but none that answer my questions. Perhaps you can help me out.

Thanks

Okay JG...I need some help

I am running the PAC adapter for my RCA's...I want to get an iPod/iPhone integration kit for my system but I cannot confirm if it will work with the PAC adapter. Could someone please post a link to of the part # for the integration kit I need that WILL work with the PAC adapter?

OR

Talk to me about the Locpick if you have one...I know that they have RCA outs but I have read there is no F/R so you lose the fade capability...that true? Can i run the PAC and Locpick together? I really want to watch DVD's while driving (for passenger of course) and to turn on the rear camera while in Drive, that would be awesome! What are the other benefits of the locpick? Thanks in advance...

Plus REP for any and all that assist :)

This is the Lockpick 550...which seems awesome but is $$$ and I want to make sure it will do what I want...first thing I want is quality RCA out (seems like it has an A/V out, so I would just use the A), has the iPhone integration, and the camera/movie thing is sweet too...if you have the 550 tell me about it pretty please
