Not too good with electrical and lightning and need some help! Lookin to install fog lights on my laredo. i see the fog kit from J4J, which includes the lights and the dash-mount switch. the thing is it requires Starscan to get it workin. Called up the dealership to see how much that would run me and they said $150  just for Starscan. Is there anyway to use the kit without starscan? maybe aftermarket fogs? Have any1 done this? appreciate ne kind of help:thumbsup:

damn...the install is gravy and directions are included with the kit....but $150 to activate them. it takes 30 seconds!!! My dealer did it for FREE!

You could use an aftermarket switch and relay wired into the factory fogs. I'd try and find another dealer first.

bro i would call around a few dealerships to see what they say about the starscan. it does literally take 30 secs. do you need an oil change? get one and say hey my fogs aren't working right can you check them out?

I bought the same kit from J4J and install was easy. Just need a set or torx drivers. But $150 to activate from that dealer????? thats insane, and you should call them up and complain they are trying to rip you off. When I got mine activated I went down with the starscan instructions in my hand, asking how much then was told half hour labor at like 45 bucks. I rolled my eyes and said whatever but ill never come back here with those prices for the actual work done. When my car was ready, 10 min later, the guy said he "gave me a break", bill was for 20 bucks. So yes, call around and let them know that you know it only takes 5 min to actually activate.

Here's a story kinda on base with getting ripped off at shops. When I recently installed my Eibach lowering springs myself I stripped the passenger side lower sway bar bolt and it only went in half way. I waited till monday morning and drove it to a local gas station shop where they helped me out before with a frozen lug nut and charged me 10 bucks to take it off, well worth it. I went there but the guy was busy he said, I asked anyways about the cost and he said about 10-20 bucks. So i drove to the next gas station shop, but when they put it on the lift the hick looking grease monkey kid starts shaking his head saying "man thats bad", When i asked what he was talking about he said I needed a whole new lower control arm, FOR A STRIPPED BOLT!!!. I told him to take it off the lift so i can go somewhere that can simply tap and re-thread the hole, then he said he will try it but no gaurantees. So he did it within 2 min, then charged me $46.50. And thats why I dont take my car anywhere, bunch of rip off artists trying to rip off old ladies or sumthing. Sorry for ranting in this thread, but kinda goes with the whole starscan issue and being ripped off for actual work done.

Did you ever take care of this Davy? If you do the install perfectly they can't say anything. Tell them you have reset the battery via removal of neg terminal and they still won't work. Hahahaha

How come everyone thinks it is Ok to rip the dealer off? That is what you are doing? They have to pay the techs and the Starscan tools arent cheap either..

My dealer hooked me up for free w/ the starscan tool to turn on my fogs.

And no I DO NOT feel bad for "ripping" off the dealer Saleen!!!

Dealers do that to us all the time. I dont care about them. They are in for the money and not for Customer Service.

They are worst than a root canal without anesthesia.

i understand but $150 for a 30 sec job is ridiculous. i'm just tryin to get a fair price, afterall i did just buy the jeep from em. I helped them and they should return the favor.

Yeah I do not care about the dealers...they did not even know how to enable my drop-down mirrors in reverse...and think about how many THOUSANDS of dollars they have charged for the starscan tool they are using. Also, they already rip us of at $65 an oil change...if it takes two seconds there should be no charge or like a $10 activation fee; not $150.

Is yours a 09 ltd Davy? I love that lower bumper insert!!!

Install them yourself. It's literally a very easy, 1/2 hour job. Take it to the dealer to get starscanned and you're set.

Troy, it's best to get the kit from J4J and install it yourself to save some $$. but u do need the dealership to activate it tho.

ok so the fogs go on when the headlights are on

LO.7
09-08-2009, 08:32 PM
No, the new switch has an extra setting to turn your fogs on.

You can just use your fogs w/o the lows on.

Your fogs will run with your turn signal lights.

whats kind of switch is it ? so have you done this

LO.7
09-08-2009, 08:41 PM
Yeah I installed mine a while back.

This switch replaces your stock turn signal switch.. It looks identical but has an extra option for fog lights. Literally takes 2 minutes to switch out.

This is one of the easiest mods you can do on your own.. It's all plug and play, aside from the dealership starscan tool.

jeeppro

LO.7
09-08-2009, 08:46 PM
A dealership diagnostic scan tool.. They basically plug it into your truck and enter a code to unlock the function of your fog lights.. Mine did it for free, but some charge. Call around first to find out.

Hey so since were all talking fogs here, the stock fog option works without the low beams having to be on, but will not work without the driving/parking lights on?

Seems the only way to have the fogs on and ONLY the fogs on is to use an aftermarket kit and switch?

Btw, the fogs look great Dave, how much is the kit from j4j btw?

Here ya go. The red bulb is for my alarm so dont mind that. Basically got the OEM fogs for around $50 but my uncle just connected the fuse to the battery and had a separate switch for it. Basically put the wire thru the firewall into the dash. I didnt go to the dealer because I basically didn't want to pay. :o

This is matts pic but the firewall is highlighted

Voila. Hope that helps. so basically, you can just drive around with the fogs on without the parking lights on. Preety cool eh? Feel free to ask a question, hopefully I can help.
