She fired right up and settled right down to an idle. Amazes me how easy it is to swap in larger injectors with the iEMS3 and they start right up. Fuel trims were in the single digits +5/-5.

The engine is an all forged internals 5.7 from Sharadon Performance. She sounds soo sweet, I am sure Escape will fill in some details.

She has gone through three heat up cool down cycles tonight, so after I drop a quart of ATF in to top off the torque converter in the morning, she hits the road for a 50 mile break in run and then an oil change and back out to test out some low boost.

Here are some pics I took tonight of his install.

Enjoy.

Looking from the back forward.

http://northcoastturbosystems.com/images/xrt8/IMG_0283.JPG

Close up showing the oil pump mounting and the waste gate atmospheric dump. Similar to what the rally cars run, an atmospheric dump for the wastegate reduces overall back pressure on the exhaust side of the turbo allowing it to spool faster. But...... that's a 60 mm wastegate with a 2 1/4" diameter exhaust cut out, so it certainly will not be stealthy under boost!

Side shot looking up. everything is the same height as the bottom of the fuel tank.

http://northcoastturbosystems.com/images/xrt8/IMG_0285.JPG

Looking straight at eye level from the side, the SRT-8 side skirts will hide everything, but even on a stock Cherokee, it is not visible looking down.

The engine compartment, nice and clean.

Close up of our CNC black anodized vacuum block we use for our add on vacuum system.

http://northcoastturbosystems.com/images/xrt8/IMG_0289.JPG

The latest Bosch pencil style EV14 fuel injectors, 56 lb capacity at our fuel pressure. These things are sweet, WAY better than the Ford Cobra injectors I was using previously (I see a set coming for mine VERY soon).

The iEMS3 wiring harness in the engine compartment. Other than the white Molex connector, it is indistinguishable from the factory harnesses.

Looking from the drivers side.

And finally, the triple gauge pod install, Escape has a little bit of trimming to do, but looks really nice.

More to come as it hits the road.

Engine needs to break in before we hammer on it, going out tomorrow set at 3.5 psi for testing, then up to 7 psi when Escape picks it up. In late September at the Monster Mopar weekend, we will be bumping it up to 10 psi when we can get some runs on the track for datalogging.

I can not wait till tomorrow to hear that wastegate, man that is going to be a Loooong 50 miles before I can hit it!

it really does look excellent, I'm assuming this is stainless or are you planning to have it coated once you've road tested and proven it?

We'll have to bring the inlet pipe up the other side of the engine though, bloody steering shaft will be in the way on the Aussie ones. Grrrr.

Oh no, no coating here all of the cold and hot side piping is 304H Stainless Steel. Even all of the mounting tabs and rod hangers are 304 Stainless Steel. Only thing that is not Stainless is the 3.5' diameter air inlet stub.

No carbon steel piping hiding under a coating to rust out from the inside as others use.

It is way more expensive, but the results are well worth it. Aluminized steel is about $3 a foot where the 304H is about $11 a foot.

This is the 3rd 5.7 Turbo Cherokee out the door, and I have another SRT-8 Cherokee system headed to Florida in about three weeks.

Now I just need to find me someone with a 4.7 and I REALLY want to do a Commander.

Give me a jingle some time and let's see if we can work something out.

On the steering shaft. maybe not, if it is inside the frame rail, should not be an issue as I come up on the outside of the frame rail.

Ah good stuff Tim, I didn't think you'd go the "cheat" coating mate. I've used HPC coatings http://www.hpcoatings.com.au/pages/about.htm over here on several applications and it's proven awesome stuff but expensive. Stainless is gorgeous too and in comparison (and downtime!) great value for money.
You know, I think you need a WH right hand drive gunea pig to get an install into and template so you can begin exports to the world.

You can do mine! :D

I cant wait to see how this works out and how that waste gate sounds. How can you get a vid of that? While its up on the dyno?

This thing is going to be amazing. What are your expectations?

Looks kind of odd a turbo 5.7 hemi with BFG all terrains. LOL.

Those BFG's are going away real quick, he is trying to get his new rims/tires in now.

I have been up to the axles in water (slow), and no issues. I turned his backwards (filter) to get some cooler air, mine tucks up a bit higher in the depression under the passenger rear seat, but the air is hotter there.

We tell customers to pick up an extra filter to keep on the shelf, that way when you change your oil, you can pop on a new filter straight away, and clean the one that came off for the next oil change. I have two oil changes on mine, and no signs of dirt build up.

If running in snow, would probably be a good idea to install a shield, and I will be working on one before too long.

Thanks Bubba,

Not really sure on times...She will be running 7psi for a bit. Then once I get my Stage 3 Racing Trans in and probably upgrade the fuel delivery system we will start pushing 10+psi's (end of September at Monster Mopar 2009). From there probably go up to 15psi's then 20psi's, see what breaks and how she reacts to those levels and either back off the boost a bit or hold her there.

After I get her home and finish putting all her sexy pieces on I'm going to find a Dyno and get some numbers.

I'm also going to look into Torque Management removal and resetting the RPM Limits as it now has a perfectly balanced engine and a 6.1 cam. From there who knows? But we will see!

Next on my list is Rims and Tires (Hopefully the Dalars don't weigh a ton, if they do it's Forged OEM SRT8 20"x9"'s powder coated matte black) and ordering my 10,000k LED Halo's.

The original stock engine was a 5.7L, actually a 345 in³ = 5.65353 L.

With the new larger custom diamond racing pistons SharaDon had to bore the block to fit them. Which equals out roughly to 352 in³ = 5.76824 L

So now it is a true 5.7L. There is only a 0.11471 difference in the displacement.

But if I use Jeeps marketing math , it equals a 5.8L which just sounds cooler

Just to give everyone an update, everything was on track for pickup on Saturday, only had a little bit of tuning at elevated boost to do. Drove it home Friday night as I had to be at the local dealership Saturday at 8am to get the AC system serviced.

Went to start it Saturday morning and bells and whistles everywhere and it would hardly run except to two foot it. Got it to the dealership and got the AC serviced and took it back to the shop. After about 5 - 6 hours of trouble shooting......................

Failed factory MAP sensor. And of course, it is not available ANYWHERE, and can't get one till Tuesday. Now, all the base tuning is likely whacked cause the sensor was likely failing the whole time I was tuning it. Bummer as I know Escape was all excited to pick it up this weekend, and I was excited to get it off my lift!

When it failed, it was throwing the P0129 code for low barometric pressure which means it was not reading at all on start up, and was throwing it into limp mode. It would also display an "ESP Disabled" message.

After I ran through all the checks for voltage and resistance in the circuits, it was down to two possibilities, failed sensor or failed ECU. I temporarily hooked up a GM 1 BAR MAP sensor to the circuit, and fortunately, it was just the failed factory sensor.

Now we just have to wait to get one in.

This thing is the Shizzle, and I'm seriously in awe of those black rims.......

As am I, I just hope the weight is comparable to the 36 lbs. 20"x9" front SRT8 stockers. i heard as a rule adding 1 lb to the weight of your rims/tires combo equals adding 2 lbs. anywhere else in/on the vehicle...or basically a loss of 20hp every +1 rim/tire combo you do!

Lighter is better.

I found a good source for info here:
http://www.wheelweights.net/
and here:
http://www.mechdb.com/index.php/Wheel_weights

I started a thread here about wheel weight, Please contribute data if you have some!
http://www.jeepgarage.org/showthread.php?t=2213&highlight=wheel+weight

Speaking of those rims there is a chrome set for sale here:
http://www.cherokeesrt8.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29851

I'm not sure if their camera has the correct date on it, but if it does these are a custom drilled set as they just started making them for the WK.

Thanks,

Yeah I started a thread ages ago detailing mine and requesting wheel weights from members, don't hold your breath for info mate :) lol
We did however manage to get the basics, take a look;

http://jeepgarage.org/showthread.php?t=180&highlight=wheel+weight

If the wheels are anything like mine, they are made a a blank, and then the importer/manufacturer drills them and machines the offset to suit the vehicle they're ordered for.

Totally agree on your wheel weight calculations, we're always at pains to find the lightest wheels possible for the race cars. The flow on effects are acceleration, braking, and easier shock absorber control. It's a much overlooked factor of increasing performance.
It's worth noting that different tire specs and brands can weigh substantially different, though getting the weight info prior to purchase in near on impossible!

More to come in a bit...still waiting on some more parts to come in!

Oh yeah and changing the pre-cat O2's sucks (bank 2, left side)...some engineer from Jeep needs to go back to school for putting the connector where it is!

The best part of the whole changing the O2's is... once I put the new one in (bank 2, left side) it was broken right out of the package. Fired it up and CEL's all over the place and it started dumping gas like mad into bank 2. DashHawk said Bank 2 to lean because the O2 wasn't reading and the Jeep was trying to push 33% more fuel to it on Bank 2 long and short term fuel trims...turned it off immediately.

So not only is it a pain to get to but I had to do it 4 times tonight...It has since been modified and is now easier to get to and has the old O2 on that side till Monday when I can return it for one that isn't broken.

I believe those that design it should have to take it apart also...just because it fits in the computer does mean you can fit your hand in there and get to it.

Once James gets his new rims, he needs to stop in so we can check out a few things with his wiring. His is an 05, and there were some subtle differences in the wiring depending on when it was built as it was a transition year. Of course the only drawing available is the last one published.

Once I do that we can make a few tweaks and be ready for the dyno.

Here is the height and weight of each:

Stock 17" Ronin with 235/65/17 Eagle LS = 53.0 lbs. Dia. = 29" Revs = 719
Stock 17" Ronin with 265/65/17 BFG TA KO's = 73.6 lbs. Dia. = 30.7" Revs = 678
OEM SRT8 Front with 255/45/20 Eagle RSA EMT = 67.6 lbs. Dia. = 29.1" Revs = 719
OEM SRT8 Rear with 285/40/20 Eagle RSA EMT = 74.8 lbs. Dia. = 29" Revs = 719

I take her up to a little over half throttle at the end too...45-95 in a less than 3 seconds! The rest of the vid is just normal driving and I'm usually letting off the throttle as it really wants to go FAST....

She is currently running around 7-8psi at a 9:1 compression. As soon as I run some datalogs with some new files that Tim has sent me we will be pushing her up to 12+ psi and then I have to do some more mods to go up to 20 which will be insane to say the least.

If Escape decides to go with the AR headers then he is going to have some custom exhaust work to do as he is going to have to have a mid cat section made that still comes together into a single CAT flange to attach to the turbo system where the factory cat flange is now.

OR

He comes back, someone buys his 5.7 Turbo system, and he installs the 6.1 Cherokee system using a T-76 turbo. The 6.1 system attaches to twin cat flanges then Y's together into one Turbo inlet.

No they are not interchangeable with each other, two different systems.

Whats the difference in price between the 5.7 and 6.1 and the power difference.

Tim@NCTSLLC

Whats the difference in price between the 5.7 and 6.1 and the power difference.

The 5.7 kit is $5495 and the 6.1 kit is on sale at $5695 (normally $6195).

The 6.1 kit uses a larger turbo mounted behind the rear axle, and the 5.7 uses a smaller turbo mounted under the passenger side rear seat area.

The two systems are quite different in that the 5.7 system is designed for the single CAT flange mounting, and the 6.1 for dual CAT flange mounting, so the 6.1 system would not be an option for use on a 5.7 due to the differences in the exhaust systems.

Also, the 6.1 has more exhaust flow due to the increased displacement and better manifolds, so I would not want to use the 6.1 turbo on a 5.7 engine as it would dramatically affect the spool rate of the turbo.

Nice videos but it's time for some headers to change that beast into a totally different animal.

I just ordered a set of AR Headers today! No cats and with a 3" to 3" Y to merge into the turbo. Currently figuring out the specs of my new fuel system.

All set to be installed in mid-March when I head on up to Sharadon Performance for the install of the headers, fuel system and trans.

Now is the hard part...the waiting!

I also ordered a rear cargo cover and 4 TPMS sensors yesterday and am waiting on the snow to go away so I can get my 275/315 Invo's installed.

I'm really not liking winter right now!

Just ordered the tires today!

275/40ZR20 for the front
315/35ZR20 for the rear

They should be in mid Feb. Then we will have to see what mother nature has to say about putting them on.

The Invo's (28.62") are smaller than the stock GY (29.1") and I imagine will weigh considerably less and have a lot more traction.

Gauges and Monitoring and some upgrades to my Jeep

I was just wondering if any of you fellow gear heads out there have ever ran SPA Technique gauges?

I looked for an AutoMeter dual EGT Gauge and it appears that they don't make one.

I have found some made by Spa Technique. Have any of you heard of this company before, thoughts/opinions on their stuff? They are definitely a bit pricey...lol.

Here are the gauges I'm thinking of:

Dual EGT gauge and kit DG 222
http://www.spatechnique.com/product_...ils.cfm?id=385 (http://www.spatechnique.com/product_pages/productdetails.cfm?id=385)

Dual Boost/Fuel Pressure gauge DG 216
http://www.spatechnique.com/product_...ils.cfm?id=381 (http://www.spatechnique.com/product_pages/productdetails.cfm?id=381)

I'm thinking Black bezel, black face and a red back light.

Here is what else I have going on......

I have a set of custom longtube headers without cats being made right now from AR Headers. Should be delivered next week each longtube collector will have an EGT probe so I can see what each bank is doing.

New fuel system I'm spec'ing out right now, soon to be installed mid-march along with everything else.

Just finished installing the ignition upgrade.

Here is what I started with...The ugly 05 rats nest of wires. Only 8 shared coils, spark plug wires over the manifold. Basically a ugly underpowered design.

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e295/My_Kiddos/JAMES%20STUFF/IMG_0694.jpg

First order of business. Get rid of those over the top spark plug wires, shared coils and those huge ball socket cover attachments.

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e295/My_Kiddos/JAMES%20STUFF/IMG_0764.jpg
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e295/My_Kiddos/JAMES%20STUFF/IMG_0765.jpg
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e295/My_Kiddos/JAMES%20STUFF/IMG_0767.jpg

Next order of business. The 05 to 06 coil connections are different and wired totally opposite. Cut those off and rewire them to the 06 specs.

Cut, striped, crimped, soldered and shrink wrapped! Orange is Coil Command. Purple is ASD Relay.

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e295/My_Kiddos/JAMES%20STUFF/IMG_0769.jpg

Once your all done rewiring the ignition, as if that wasn't enough fun for you, now remove the valve covers.

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e295/My_Kiddos/JAMES%20STUFF/IMG_0770.jpg

Now put the new valve covers and coil packs on. Reattach all wiring and hoses.

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e295/My_Kiddos/JAMES%20STUFF/IMG_0772.jpg

Now trim to fit your engine half covers, Wipe up all the blood you dripped all over, get some cold packs for your knees (kneeling on a battery and fender for hours hurts A LOT), a heating pad for your back that is killing you, turn down the radio (cause your not cussing out the engineers anymore who thought it was cool to put all the bolts in unreachable places) and admire your work as you turn the key and she starts right up and roars like the savage beast this HEMI is!

Now if there wasn't 3 feet of snow outside I'd take her for a spin.

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e295/My_Kiddos/JAMES%20STUFF/IMG_0775.jpg

If you need any info on this or a full write up/how to let me know.

Thanks man!

The cats name is Fluffer. She is a stray that lives in the garage. Someone left her behind and my wife feed it so it stayed and has chosen to live here now.

I am not a cat person at all, but I will say this is the coolest cat ever. She comes when you call her, walks the kids to the bus stop and goes out and waits for them when the bus drops them off, kills everything in sight and generally tends to freak out for no reason which provides entertainment. You can even tell her to go get something and she will. The cat acts like a dog so it's all cool.

James stopped down today and dropped off his rear fascia (old one) to replace the one some @ss wipe screwed up on my Jeep (hit an run).

So while he was here, I upped the boost on his to 12 psi staged, he comes in at 10 psi and steps up to 12 psi by 4000 rpm's. WOW, it was wanting to get squirmy from a roll and punching it even with full torque management and ESP still on. Pulls like a son of a gun. He is going to need that Sharadon tranny soon I suspect!

Best thing, his AFR is still all good even with the stock fuel system as the iEMS3 can make up for loss of fuel pressure by allowing me to easily increase the injector pulse width to compensate.

Once he gets his tranny and torque management toned down, then we will go to 15 PSI boost!

The Jeep loves the new tune and 12 psi is definitely pretty wicked! Not to sure how long the trans will live with this power level...It was pretty upset with the added boost, lol. 15-20 psi is going to be insane, that's for sure!

Less than a month is all this trans has to live for. Then in goes the stage 3 trans with a stage 3 valve body for some very wicked/hard shifts. Good thing too because I just put the 275/315 Nitto INVO's on today and they have some real grip. The ride is so much better now! Pics to follow after I wash her up in the next few days.

IMHO, I would keep the Hemi Punisher Basge on the rear gate where the stock Hemi Badge is.

I would put the side Hemi Punisher Badge on the front doors above the angles and chrome trim like a Rocky Mountain edition.

I would not go over board though with the Skulls, I would keep 1 Skull on the tail gate on the drivers side like your first pic.

I might try doing the Skulls on the front fenders where you have them in the pics with the Hemi Punisher Badge on the doors.

Excellent thoughts and I'm pretty much thinking the same thing. I'm trying to figure out where to put them so that it's not overdone and it keeps it clean and classic. Once I find the perfect spots I will contour them to fit the body (as they are flat right now).

I'm thinking of doing 1 skull on each fender, 1 skull on back (drivers side) and I still have my XRT8 TURBO emblem being made that will go on the back pass side.

I'm going to keep the doors clean as I will be getting the Black Ops custom billet door moldings that are custom engraved!

Where are you getting all this billet stuff made? BT? LOL

Deff leave room for at least 1 Hemi Punisher logo on the back though so it will tie in the skulls.

The pieces look fantastic. Did you do them yourself and/or how? CNC ?

As far as placement goes, my two cents would be a skull on each fender and the HEMI punisher on the rear passenger side where the stock HEMI sign used to be.

Anyway, I am looking forward to a video so see and hear this beast roaring.

Thanks Guys!

and....

Today I put in my SharaDon Stage 3 Transmission and Valve Body!

This is one Absolutely Insane transmission and the shifts are incredible! It puts you back into your seat on every shift just like a nice short throw manual trans and this was in normal (going very easy on it) around town driving. The best part is I haven't even went into boost with it yet as I have to break it in for a bit.

I can't wait for my CMR Trans tune! It will be solid shifting at 6,500 through all the gears and no more torque management! Full power all the time!

I'll post up some pics as soon as I can figure out how to get them off my phone.

rvtifer

And yet another step towards the punisher's completion. Sounds like a nice thing to experience too and the idea of shifting up at 6,500 is just awesome but I think that pictures are not going to be able to convey the full experience and we are going to be needing some videos.

Break-in is almost complete...just a few more miles and then it's time for all hell to break loose!

CMR shortly.

Then a new fuel system, up the boost and then I'm thinking something like this below...

Yeah that's right a nice progressive direct port nitrous setup!

100-150 off the line up to IDK?

On another note... My dog killed something big and I had to bury it today. I looked like he ripped off a deers leg...I'm not sure as he mangled it very well. He also chewed up and ripped out the control wires to one of my air conditioners. So only half the house was getting AC. He's already eaten the cable and phone lines. I guess next he's gonna eat the satellite lines.

He's turning out to be a monster...LOL

I'd Love to start a website about all the stuff our pets have ruined. My first dane chewed 5 shoes... all different, no matches, so we had to throw out 5 pairs of shoes instead of just a pair or two. Its like he was taste testing.

Have you tried that sour spray? It is safe for kids, cant really be smelled by humans, but spray it on things you dont want your dog chewing, and it should steer them away.... However in my case my dogs love it and followed me around licking whatever i sprayed it on. My first dane has grown out of it for the most part, the second one, not so much

Anyways, I cannot wait to see some videos of the jeep, should be awesome!

Man that is beyond badass. Kinda on another note, doesn't piss anyone off to see that damn near everything seems to be pagued with some kind of rust? I've looked under my hood and see various parts, pulleys, etc with either a side of rust or batterred with it. Damn Chrysler materials. Hey can you just put the 6.1 valve cover plastics on a 5.7? If so then I would love to put some on mine, just without the 6.1.

Thanks man, and I hear that about the tarnished/rusted parts. The factory should only use 304 stainless, aluminum or titanium. I'll get it all painted and polished as soon as I'm done tearing it all apart and putting it back together again and again...lol

Yes, you can put the half covers on the 5.7. You will have to modify them a bit though, get the plastic attachment studs that go on the valve covers and get different bolt without the studs for your fuel rails.

Omar:

She runs great! She needs some more tune adjustments for the increased airflow but it's so much better than before and the sound is intense! It has dropped my EGT's in half! I used to idle at 950 and now it's 550.

Have you ever thought about putting a 6.1 intake manifold, or is it even possible to switch onr on a 5.7? I figure since you're running more power that the 6.1 would be better than the plastic stocker.

The 5.7 Mani only flows a little less than the 6.1... Pretty sure he would also have to port match the heads for the 6.1 also... Maybe the eagle 09 mani though

Plus, I am pretty sure there isnt too much of an issue with airflow seeing whats under the passenger side

That is definately a tight install, crazy to see how small and restrictive those stock 5.7 exhaust manifolds are.

I'm really considering getting some 5.7 LX shorty headers to see if they would fit, and clear everything, but am scared to take it all apart, only to realize they dont, and have to put it all back together again.

But it looks awesome, now its time for some videos!

Edit: also, any check engine lights? Even with the O2 sensors that far down, i figured no cats would throw a code quick!

I need to learn how to do multiple quotes...LMAO!

NHWK05: Brakes are in the plans. Skulls are done, I'll PM you in a few days.

Black Betty: Yes you can switch over to the 6.1 intake or anyone of the Eagle intake manifolds but you will need a set of adapters to do so along with and EGR block-off kit and some other stuff. On a naturally aspirated engine this would be an excellent mod as it would help ease the airflow being sucked in, but I'm just forcing it...lol. I have considered getting the RAM adjustable (long and short runners) Eagle intake which I could have the iEMS3 control.

yousmellfunnytoo: Yes the rear O2's throw codes every now and then...They are going to be turned off in my next CMR tune.

maxst2: I'll do a startup vid soon for ya. It's loud and it crackles just like an old school monster HEMI.

KlutcH: Thanks man!

surfrman: I just contacted Nick at American Racing Headers and had them build me a custom set. Make sure to tell them it's for a 5.7 (square ports) as the exhaust ports are different than the 6.1 (D ports). Mine have 1 3/4" primaries with a 3" spike collector with catless mids. Most important is to tell them only the passenger side has the EGR, there is none on the drivers side. I had to weld mine shut as my set came with the EGR on both sides. The headers will have to be custom fab'd into your setup (that's the fun part...lol). You will also need a dual inlet muffler. Check out Hemibeasts posts below. It will be more like the setup your looking for.

boniomario: Never had an issue and I've splash through many huge puddles and drive it all year around. I do however turn down the boost to 3psi, put on the BFG's and put the stock 5.7 front fascia back on. Only issue I could see is if you submerge it, say launching a boat, some jetski's or driving it through a river...lol. If it does hydrolock it at some point there is always insurance so a nice 392 or 426 would be headed my way.

Around 1.5" from the hitch. I plan on pulling them in a bit but haven't yet. I have been told it also throws some flame out the back during WOT and they get extremely hot and I don't want it to melt anything. I'm thinking of doing that 1 large Lambo tip.
