I do mine with the Elvis's Easy 5 Step Engine Detail Method ©™ <----LOL
1. Cover PCM with a plastic bag
2. Wash the engine with a scrub brush/sponge with water and car wash soap
3. Rinse with water
4. Spray Armor All over everything
5. Drive around the block to dry and WHALA!!!
(May have to wipe down with towel to clean drip marks)
I believe thats right? Correct me if I'm wrong Joe...
Robert Palmer
08-27-2009, 07:27 AM
Nope nothing wrong just you do not have to use Armor All and if you do only the spray bottle, not the tire shine shit like some other method recommended. Another coating I suggest is Meguiars Natural Shine.

In CA we have degreasing laws and I would never do this in a million years in my driveway so where do you guys go to clean the engine? I go to a coin wash and hope that I don't get caught.

Wow degreasing laws huh??? That sux a fat one. Well mine wasn't very dirty to start. My jeep is only 5 months old. No more grease spilled on my driveway than when I dress the tires but I use a sponge for that.

Whats up guys...Well i'll use the "kings" method of dressing up the engine, but what solution do you use to degrease the entire engine. I think i read a post where someone used a mixture of simple green and water.. And is there anything else that should be covered other than the PCM..

Cover up your PCM, then use diluted Simple Green to de-grease and de-dirt (lol). From the looks of it, that will take 3 or 4 times to de-grease. LOL
After you are satisfied with the de-greasing, then spray Meguiars Natural Shine all over the place and drive the vehicle around the block 4 times. Park the vehicle and open the hood. You should see a very very clean engine bay.
All of this clean engine bay talk makes me want to clean mine. :D

So putting cleaner and water all over the wires in there doesnt do damage? I want to spray down everything with engine degreaser then wash it off with water from a pitcher, I dont even want to put a water hose near it. Should I be ok? Im worried about water getting down where the coils go in the heads or something. What about the alternater, do i cover that too or can it handle getting wet? I want to clean it this weekend, since its getting colder and its filthy.
Robert Palmer
09-30-2009, 05:09 PM
Just follow the Elvis Presley method of engine cleaning and you will be a-ok. But in your case I would stay away from using a de-greaser because of the painted strut bar.
What I would do if I were you is get a foam gun and use that for your engine bay.
TimmyB
09-30-2009, 05:11 PM
Whats a "foam gun"?
And im not worried about my painted strut bar, its clearcoated and has been installed since sunday so with the engine temp im sure its cured and can take some cleaner on it without ruining.

Your engine looks brand new. Do you not drive your car, or do you wash and wipe it dailey to keep it like that? Right now I have road salt and dirt everywhere in my engine bay. Im about to go to the self car wash, leave the motor running, spray on engine degreaser then spray it down with water. Its 23 degrees out right now.

I used that Orange stuff on mine that you can get for like 4 dollars a bottle, it works awesome, I just sprayed it on, waited 10 min and gently hosed it off, I only needed to do it once and that was the first time in like 3 and a half years. Its supposed to be less toxic and crap than gunk and other engine degreasers so I was surprised how well it worked. Its been like 2 months since I washed my car but the temps haven't left the 30's.

What is the best to use/do on the metal parts like the exhaust manifold to get pitted oil etc off? Just wanna finish my detail....all the plastic is good but the metal looks like someone has sat there for 10 years and spit coffee on it :(
Awsome detail btw m4x bro.

Yeah, you went one step too far and used gloss for the intake. Should have kept it at matte to match the rocker covers.

Orange isn't a color I'd have thought of for the engine bay but dayum it looks awesome! Why didn't you go for orange on the intake manifold too, or did you want that to blend in with the motor?
My dream engine bay vision is; red valve covers, red K&N FIPK tube, red intake manifold, Optima redtop battery and perhaps even red coolant.
I'd love to add a catch can (in red ofcourse but don't know if it's possible on the WJ 4.7 motor?

Good one ... What did you use to make your engine bay that spit shine?
Harrison@Stage6
11-22-2010, 10:25 PM
I use Black Magic 2 in 1 Engine cleaner, then spray down with some Armour All. Sometimes I use the AA Natural Finish, sometimes just reg. AA. Best thing about the BM 2n1 in it can be sprayed on a warm engine. You don't have to wait for it to be cool. Spray on, wait 15, spray off, mildly wipe down to dry, spray down heavily, then wipe down again with new rag. Takes me about 30-45 minutes from start to finish.
