You're saying it looks great because you haven't seen it up close LOL

It needs a good buffing, clay-bar and waxing. I also have a bunch of small dings (not my doing)- it's a PDR man's wet dream.

My badges are peeling too....Wanna help me shave them?

My Spectra Radiator came in yesterday. POS was sagging in the middle! Was bad enough that it literally looked like a smiley face. Getting a replacement sent out to me by RockAuto tomorrow. Pathetic!

In other news, I just finished having my exhaust re-hung (hangers sheared from excessive torque). Next up is ceramic coating the exhaust.

Dammit man..thats sucky!! Why do you think it was sagging?

I never actually got to see it first-hand...It was sent to my buddy's house- he is a mechanic so we are installing it at his place....but based on his account, it literally looked like the thing got too heat during the fabrication process.

It should be getting shipped back today...so I'll have it by next week sometime.

2 weeks later, I have a new radiator from Rock Auto. Havent seen this one either, but it looks like they got it right this time. Install will likely be sometime this week or the weekend. Also gonna modify my thermostat to run a little cooler. Already a 180, gonna try to put a small hole in it so it stays around 170ish.

I don't think I will...Any lower and it might be an issue. If I can get it to hold 180 in traffic and 170 at cruise, thats fine. I need that extra cooling edge.

scjeep4.7HO

I ran a 160 t stat. It ran too cold and did not get up to temp in time which made it throw a CEL.

Why is it that you're looking to lower it further Shawn? If it's holding 180 at all times then I'd leave it be.

I am hoping it doesn't trip a CEL.

Yesterday we swapped out my radiator, after a month's worth of delays.

To anyone that may end up doing this in the future on a 4.7 WJ, I'd recommend at least one other set of hands to help. It is so tight to get the radiator in, we literally lathered the frame rails in VASELINE to get it seated right.

It took myself plus 2 seasoned marine/diesel mechanics 2.5 hours to swap this POS out.

BTW, what passes as an acceptable cooling system amazes me. the factory 1-row radiator is a joke. If time and money were of no concern to me, I would have retrofitted a 3-row universal rad and ditched the hydraulic fan for 2 electric fans. Believe it or not there would be MORE space in the engine bay...which is so badly needed.

Joe, Hannes copied my exhaust setup...the only difference is that I am running Thunderbolt ceramic precats and a race 3rd cat, where he is running factory metallic precats and no 3rd cat. His is a little louder than mine.

I'll get one real soon, looks like I'll finally be able to load up my new SCT 93 file.

Is the misfire because of the tune you uploaded??

No....Still havent re-loaded the tune. Have to replace the coil, and then we'll go from there.

Today the Jeep got hit HARD by a carcass of a Semi trailer tire. It hit hard enough to slightly indent the area of the hood slightly and scratch up 2 grape-fruit sized portions of the hood down to primer.

I'm going to have to live with the indent until I get get a PDR guy to pull it out, and i'll touch up the scratches so it at least looks halfway decent.

LOL....you dont know me very well do ya......

You're not understanding what I meant.

I meant that in order to take advantage of the 180 t-stat, you have to modify the settings of the hydraulic fan to come on earlier. The stock program lets it spin from 100-500 rpm at all times, and it comes on at high speed at 220* F. My truck will hold 180 no problem on the highway, but sitting in traffic it will creep up to 195. This is on the stock tune.

Hannes....PDR? I'm not sure what that stands for. Paintless Dent Removal? :D

I dropped the ball on us meeting up again these last few weeks, very very sorry. I've been swamped with backed up porting work and school (not in that order).

I actually need to see you to hear your exhaust setup with the stock metallic precats and no 3rd cat....I believe the ceramics I hastily purchased and had welded in last year are either starting to clog up or come apart (have a rattle again... ) . I am debating either gutting them, running straight pipe through them, or just running metallics in their place (all of these is with the metallic 3rd cat). The issue is O2 related CEL's and noise. I ran modded OEM precats with no 3rd cat with the 4x14" Mag and it was WAY too loud.

What is the significance of the letters PDR? I knew the paint is Graphite Metallic but that was it...

it started to grow on me after a while, but I prefer the very stealthy WJ tailpipe instead.

Per our discussion tonight, I think I'm just gonna swap the ceramics out for some metallics instead. I don't have that farting noise at all.

FlyinRyan

Oh. Wasn't aware of that, always referred to it as Graphite Metallic.

I have the fix. Come down to Daytona and I'll do it for you. Quit pussyfootin', Hannes.:lol:

Latest updates....modified the coolant mix from 95% distilled water 5% coolant to about 75/25.....Runs cooler...

Also deleted the rear cowl gasket. Seems to help cooling at speed. Looks like my cooling issues are finally under control.

Looks like SCT will be adding additional tables to the DCX Advantage software so that I can modify my hydraulic fan temps. Thats right, SCT is adding capabilities basically just for me....:D

dreamer1213
11-16-2009, 03:38 AM
Hmmm....no wonder...a 50/50 mixture is usually the minimum cooling mix you should use...70/30 for "higher performance" cooling is what the Prestone bottle said...but I think its 70% coolant, 30% water.

Ohhhh Ryan...calm down...LOL! I dunno if all that wire-snipping is for me...might just have to get a tune later on down the road... ;)

You're a lucky boy getting SCT to do that for you!

Dude hate to burst your bubble but I have BEEN talking to SCT about the hydraulic fan, and again on the coolant. Water is the coolin agent, Glycol is the agent that gives it the ANTI-FREEZE properties.

NHWK05
11-16-2009, 02:12 PM
I used to work in a foundry and i would have to quench the 1010* parts in a 22% glycol to water mixture. The only reason for the glycol was to help reduce evaporation of the water when the hot parts go in to it. Water does the main cooling. The glycol does help disburse the heat more evenly as well.

We'll see what happens. I haven't heard anything from Sean just yet.

For whatever reason the almost all-water mix is practically boiling within the system. Maybe this could be fixed by a higher pressure cap but I'm just reporting my findings. The coolant , regardless, raises the boiling point and is working to my benefit.

I don't know how you manage to keep your jeep cool especially with the paxton in there.

Thanks, I'm very happy with my exhaust setup. I have since ceramic coated everything from the manifolds back in black VHT Flameproof. It looks excellent.

On Saturday, with the help of Hannes, we are installing a 2008 4.7 Intake Manifold that has been ported slightly along with the necessary adapter plates from Air Ram. It will be ceramic coated in VHT flame proof. It has also been shaved to remove excess plastic. For now, I will be running my FRP throttle body with it.

Updated.

SCT tuning removed

This is likely temporary, as I just need the money right now...if I go down this road again, it will be a much nastier setup. Generally speaking, I've hit a brick wall with this current combo. It has the potential, but I don't have the $$$ to get the final pieces to finish the puzzle.

I know, I know....I'm just going back to the drawing board on this one. I'm gonna make some changes in due time then revisit the tuning. right now, I'm stuck with this gutless launch until I do something drastic.

FlyinRyan
03-01-2010, 08:35 PM
Making a bunch of small tweaks.

-insulated intake tube (Need to apply final layer)
-insulating upper & lower coolant hoses (Upper hose done, lower hose to do tomorrow)
-insulating fuel rails & crossover
-modifying the firewall for better clearance for the 08 Manifold throttle+cruise control bracket

I completed the upper hose mod tonight and I'm already seeing improved warm-up time- which is always nice. I have no way of measuring how hot it gets in that area of the engine bay, but my air filter currently sits next to my upper coolant hose and I know that MF'er radiates a ton of heat. Not anymore. As far as performance goes, time will tell- I suspect that the real gains will come at the track.

I was going to start insulating the fuel rails today, but it looks like for the material to adhere, I'm going to have to wipe them so they're clean- they still have alot of dirt and dust on them from when Hannes and I swapped the manifold.......

Pics to come soon.
