I'm thinking of using a hole saw and cutting a hole in the top and/or bottom half of my airbox and then epoxying a piece of plexi on the inside. This is just so I can visually check the airfilter without having to open it up.

I know some after market housings include this viewing window.

Has anyone cut a hole like this in their stock airbox?

stock air box is a turd, i dont think anyone did it yet, but give it a shot, the only downside i can really see is that u need to look at the under side to see the real dirt and such.

yeah viewing the underside may not be easy.

the issue I have is that the diesel airbox is not available from aftermarket suppliers yet with the viewing window.

u really dont need a window, or a box...do they have a cone filter setup?

also, these intakes are just cheap ass bent tubes. if u wanted to do a metal one you could hit up and exhaust shop and have them make you one, should be cheaper then buying it from someone

I know this doesn't answer your question, but personally I'd look into a CAI solution as John suggests.

It's only 4 clips to get access to the filter anyways and unless you see the bottom you'll never know the true condition of it...

I think it would look cool and thats about it.....

what does the intake for the 3.0 look like?

airbox is in the photo, you can see it with the k&n sticker, ignore the nutdriver sticking out of the engine cover. :)

You can but there is a sensor right on top of the air box that you have to put on the cone filter. That stoped me from putting on my cone filter that I have here.

ive been thinking about cutting some holes in my airbox around the sides for added air flow.. i know on my previous truck 2003 duramax many guys cut the side facing the fender out and replaced the standard plastic intake tube with a steel tube and it made a huge difference.. i wonder if that would also apply to these trucks? Made the turbo alot louder too which i wouldnt mind either

you could cut a hole on the fender side of the air box, there is actually an opening on the fender to the wheel well, not sure the purpose of that opening. I suspect the 3.0L CRD is not starving for air under part throttle. May help a bit in WOT. I think the issue with the jeep is that you certainly don't want to flood the airbox if you do water crossings.

im not concerned about water crossings im assuming im like most here and would probably never cross any amount of water that would come anywhere near the air box... i just wish there were more of these trucks out there and more people had tried different things..

I actually removed the snorkel that goes from the airbox to the grille area and installed a straight 3" pipe, along with my k&N drop in filter, should be less restrictive than a stock setup. lots of guys have completely ditched the stock airbox and put on a cone filter, you just have to make a heat shied to protect from underhood temps.
I agree about water crossings, don't intend to do it myself, thats why I put in the straight pipe to the airbox.

i just need a dyno.. that way i could test these theories

you may not want to cut a hole in your airbox if you drive in a place like this :)
