Step Pad

The color in my step pad was fading to an ashen grey color. I searched around and did not see many options other than replacing it. I did see the carbon fiber (vinyl wrapped) and others that had painted theirs. I decide to paint mine with some bed liner paint I had left over. I am pleased with the results and hope that it will last. It was a lot of work to get the step pad off and the bumper cleaned. I would hate to have to do it again.

I'm about to do this to mine as well. Just curious as to what your cleaning steps were before appling the bed liner..? Did you paint it with anything else first like krylon plastic paint?

I used a flap wheel sander on my drill to prepare the backside of the step pad and bumper surfaces. Cleaned both with water then rubbing alcohol.

The bed liner paint is acetone based and will cut through any wax/oil on the plastic and adhere to any paint below. I used RustOleum brand bed liner paint (http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=368) in the quart size and painted it on with a brush. I had waxed my Jeep a few days before this and applied generous amounts (of wax) to the step pad. It looked nice for a day then started looking ashen again.

Also note, the bed liner is a rubberized coating and it will shine up like your tires will with you preferred tire care product.

Careful though, that stuff will make the step slick!
