Alright...so yesterday Ryan drove up from Daytona to Jacksonville, and he ported my throttle body on my back porch...lol! I watched and we chatted, but it turned out really nicely.

The 4.7 throttle bodies have a 68mm inlet, but its necked to 65mm. What Ryan did was smooth out the step, and get rid of all the excess metal that was kinda "in the way"...the opening is enlarged to about 75mm...he also matched the back on the TB to the intake manifold, and gave the throttle blade a knife-edge.

Ryan goes by Sleepy4.7 on here.

It turned out really nicely. And I have to say....it for sure as heck feel as if the Jeep has a bigger mouth now. When we first took it for a test drive on the interstate, we were going about 50mph on the on-ramp. Pedal to the floor and that H.O slammed it down harder than ever before. I was really surprised. It feels like it pulls harder, and its more responsive and peppy. Passing in overdrive is effortless. Overall I'm very satisfied. Now I just have to slow it down some to see what effect it has on the fuel mileage. Ryan says with his that he saw a 1mpg increase....and I'll take whatever it wants to give me. :)

Here are some before and after pix, and some during pix:

READ this story:

So after we get back with my Jeep, we take Ryan's Jeep for a ride, because he told me that it felt different to ride in a Jeep that still had torque management. So we took his Jeep for a ride, and YES, its a lot different. No torque management equals a lot firmer/harder shifts. Anyway...we're driving on the interstate, when a Corvette station wagon drives by...pretty loud, and slammed..I'm sure it had all kinds of goodies on it....I say to Ryan: Go on! You can take em! ;) Ryan laughed and said he'd mess with him little. Well...it was a very little messing with for sure...cause as soon as that guy heard Ryan's Jeep speeding up just a tad...he put the pedal down and that TB SS was gone....so we laugh it off and drive back towards to my house, and while we are on a "quiet" road, this mystery car pull's out of a neighborhood...and when I say pull...and mean pull as in spinning the tires thru the first 2 gears, and doing it screaming all the way down. We wondered what it was. Ryan guessed a Mustang...but I thought it really sounded like a GTO. It ended up being a red GTO with a HUGE cam...and Ryan was trying to get the cam's specs from the guy while we were driving down the road....hard to do over the GTO and the Jeep's exhuast...Ryan floors it...and so does the GTO...spinning the tires till he had what seemed like 10+ car lengths on us...lol!! It was a fun...

Sweet Hannes. It looks great.

sounds like a great day Hannes.

and he did a real nice job on the TB. the SRT8 guys are having issues with the knife blade and DBW throttle but since you have cables I'm sure it wont be a problem.

i cant say my gas mileage has gone up with my tb but it is usually above 15 ever since the superchips.

Thanks Chris! I appreciate it!

Yeah Rob...it was a good day. So what's the issue they have? That blade doesn't have a choice but to do what I tell it...lol!

the have throttle by wire and some extra sensors to monitor the TB. It throws a CEL thinking some throttle blade limit has been exceeded.....something like that.

Ryan...when you see this thread I have a buddy that wants a 4.7 TB ported. He has my HO cams and springs, K&N intake and superchips. What do you suggest for him. Fastman did my first one...and I know have an F&B...but I have serious mods. What do you suggest for his 05 4.7 WK? And how much to do it for him? Do you polish as well?

Thanks everyone...it turned out great and I love it...this one was mildly polished just to let you know Scott..

That gap at the bottom feeds the IAC motor...

Corvette stationwagon = Trailblazer SS ;)

What's real interesting here is that Hannes hasn't mentioned WHY he wants to switch out his exhaust all of the sudden LOL

I will reply about the TB and all inquiries as soon as I get to a computer... Posting from my phone right now....thank you for all of the compliments, it is a very time consuming project to do by hand (Hannes can vouch for this) and I take pride in my work...

Wow, that is a big improvement over stock! Good to hear that is made a noticeable difference too.

Great work Ryan and just out of interest what did removing the torque management involve?

How many hours does it take to do that? What tools are involved? Dremel set?

Scott, I'd love to help your friend out. I only offer one size of TB (big by huge LOL ), the reason for this is primarily because when I was testing 4.7 TBs my findings were that the larger the inlet, the better performance I saw. Same goes for the closer I got to port-matching the backside of the TB to the intake manifold inlet. This is all with the 68mm TB, with a knife-edge. I retain the 68mm blade, because with a huge inlet and port-matched backside, it makes for snappy throttle response, and improved drivability.

As Hannes also noted, I saw about a 1 MPG gain in gas mileage. This is on a stock PCM cal. As with all mileage-related discussion, your results may vary.

I finish my TBs with a mild polish. In other words, it is very smooth to the touch, but not mirror finish or anything like that. I could do a finer polish but because it would add more time and tools to properly do a TB, that would have to be an option that would cost extra. Standard cost (mild polish) is 100 (includes shipping both ways).

For those interested, I will also do 3.7 and 4.0 TB's....Electronic throttle bodies make me very nervous LOL

what's with that huge hole in the lip of the throttle body?
Feeds the IAC motor. I toyed with the idea of removing the upper lip (if I could do that, the total diameter of the bore could be 81-82mm!!!!) but it would have to remain intact in order for the blade to seal off enough of the passage to idle correctly. the actual inlet for the IAC motor is recessed within the passage. I could still cut it back, but I question how much of a gain it would offer. I believe that it would not be worth the time invested.

Wow, that is a big improvement over stock! Good to hear that is made a noticeable difference too.

Great work Ryan and just out of interest what did removing the torque management involve?
Thank you for the compliments, Marty.

Long story short, it involves cutting or snipping a wire going to the TCM. It increases line pressure at all points but is most noticable at WOT shifts. It can also be modified/toggled via PCM flashing/handheld tuning, aka B&G Flash/Superchips/SCT.

Ohhh fine...the reason I'm thinking...well...going to change my exhaust is because I heard Ryan's and instantly fell in love with it...super aggressive and mean when getting on it...but still smooth and refined...

I know I say I was all Flowmaster and blah blah blah...but I changed my mind.... ;)

I had my muffler guy order the muffler today...and will most likely be taking the Jeep up to the muffler shop and have it done on Saturday...

Ohhh...and Matt...it took about 5 hours...

Ryan, I am interested in a ported TB option. My only issue is i cant just take it off and send it. I would need a core charge option if available. I'm assuming the swap on one of these is somewhat easy. I also just don't want to deal with the whole gotta buy a TB, send it install it then find someone to purchase a stock tb. Please let me know what my options are.

Hi guys - I believe I am the owner of the original Flyin' Ryan ported TB here! Ryan finished up my TB about a month ago. The OP's writeup is pretty much spot on and my TB looks very similar to what you see in his pics, but I can add a little bit as well...

IMO, it's a great mod, especially for the price. I didn't realize how much the 68mm was necked down until I saw the finished product (as well as the huge pile of aluminum shavings that resulted from it!) As you can see the opening is HUGE, and combined with my K&N intake, '08 manifold, cams and tuning that's going into my Jeep soon, this setup is going to flow very, very well in making some nice midrange torque and top end HP. With just the mods I have now I've noticed some better throttle response... the 4.7 seems to rev a little bit quicker as well as pull harder up top. I'm sure the gains will be even more pronounced with the new manifold, as I think an unported stock TB will probably be the biggest sort of restriction in that setup. Not sure if this makes sense or not, but from my experience I feel like I have a tiny bit less torque in the 2-3k rpm range under medium throttle (this may be the result of my truck needing a tune at this point lol)... but I can definitely sense a GAIN under part and WOT. The 4.7 also seems to snarl a little more when you step on it, which I love, as I had to install a second muffler due do the insane drone my original Kolak exhaust caused on the highway and that quieted the Jeep down a ton... don't buy ANYTHING from Kolak btw... lol back on topic... one thing that I am certain of is that I'm getting better gas mileage now with my ported TB. I went from an overall average of 17.3mpg to 18.0-18.5 now. Definitely helpful when you have a 90 mile commute to work.

Anyway, as the OP has stated talk to Ryan and he'll hook you up. He's a good dude, his prices are reasonable for what you're getting and the amount of labor involved. He was willing to drive down on a couple Saturday nights after working the whole day in north Jersey to get it done before he had to head back to FL, and he definitely took his time to make sure it came out right.

QQ: so i was looking at the pics and it looks like where the throttle body flap there goes back to a closed position, looks like there is still material there...did you port that the whole way through and get another larger diameter flap there to fill it or sam flap just left material there?

wouldnt leaving the material there cause a disruption in the air flow?
