Ok I know in the package deal I got, a 180 tstat is included but I want a spare.

So my questions are:

1.) Can I run anything below 180? As in a 160 or 170 Tstat?

2.) Can 180 Tstats be found in autostores? If so which Autostore?

3.) Will I get codes in the winter?

The auto parts store that I used to work at ever carried 180 stats but we could order them.

I don't think you should run under 180 degrees. It's not normal operating temp.

Search!

Oh right. :p

You can, but you risk codes.
180 you can get at Autozone, Advance Auto, Pep Boys, et al.
SAA.

What brands are sold at the autostores? Jet? Motorad?

Not Jet, but Motorad. They are made by the same company but the Jet is like the Lexus of Toyota, the Acura of Honda, the Cadillac of GM, the Infiniti of Nissan. You get the idea. ;) Oh, and the Jeep of Chrysler.

A colder engine is a happier engine. It performs better and supposedly it's better for the engine.

The thermostat is only good for bracket racing.. If I didn't go to the drags, I wouldn't worry about it but its good to keep the temps consistent inside the engine. Also you could go lower than 180* but there is no reason unless you live in the Middle East.

Get the Jet tstat I think it was $30 and from what I've heard, it has the best fit.

I think the Thermostat is in the same location as the SRT8, so work on a slight incline and most weight on the rear driver side that way the coolant shifts to the back corner. You will lose about a cup of coolant. If you work on a level surface, you will lose about a quart or so. And not many people like to see coolant spilling on the road.

A spare??? Joe in my honest opinion I think your stock one can become a spare just in case something goes wrong with the 180º, then and only then I would have order another 180º.

1.) Yes you can but you shouldn't.

2.) Yes, the Valucraft 4128 at Pep Boys or Autozone.

3.) Most likely yes as others have experienced.

Joe, I also remember reading on the lx site that the Motorad 7302-180 (http://www.motoradusa.com/products/failsafethermo/index.html) is a fail safe t-stat. What I read is that the Motorad t-stats that the part # start with a 7 are fail safe. That's the one I should have ordered when I had the 5.7L ;).
I don't know if the Jet are fail safe thou...

Let me know if you need help changing it when you get it, just get the 1Gln Ziploc bags to save and not to spill any coolant.
I still have 1 1/2 Gln of the Zerex, you shouldn't have bought any at the dealer.

I hope that helps!

The 4128 is not a fail safe, only the 7302-180 is...
By bypass you mean fail safe?

Good idea.. I'll park on Lombard Street and there will be no spilling whatsoever!

Actually, I read the instructions. It looks quite simple and I can do it myself. :D

I'm sick of walking into Auto Stores and people looking at me like this  when I give them a part number. These dickheads insist on using a specific vehicle to look up a part.
