Hi all -- been busy the past few weeks but I did have some time last weekend to try out something fun. I painted my coil covers HEMI Orange.

I made a visit to my local autoparts store and purchased HEMI Orange engine paint, Semi-Gloss Black paint, a Scotch Brite pad, some blue painter's tape and set to work.

Step 1 was to prep them for painting so I sanded down the plastic coil covers -- just to remove any spurs around the edges and ensure there was a good rough surface for the paint. Then I washed them (soap & water) and let dry.
Step 2 was to paint them HEMI orange. Simple. Dried in about 30 minutes but I let them sit for a day.
Step 3 was to mask off the HEMI logo on each cover. This took some time (about an hour) and I thought I did an OK job.
Step 4 was to apply the Black Semi-Gloss for the HEMI lettering.

I did 2 coats of each color at each step about 5 minutes apart and got a nice even distribution. I found out later when I peeled off the painters tape that I wasn't perfect with the lettering though but for my first attempt, I was fairly happy with it. It definitely has the effect I wanted.

No clearcoat, I used HEMI Orange engine enamel, figured it would be OK. Plus I like the non-glossy look of the orange. I wasn't sure what to do with the 6.1L, I may paint it or I may sand it off and re-paint. This is my first time painting something so it was an adventure for sure!

I have a 2nd set I'm planning to do this weekend, I may try clearcoat on those. I'm also looking to get a stencil of the HEMI to do it quicker/easier instead of taping.

Any advice is welcomed.

Peter that looks great. I like how the orange pops in the engine bay.

I say you should paint the 6.1L. And maybe use clear coat just incase but I'm not a paint expert so I don't know if its necessary.

I'll check on the clearcoat.

No, these are for 6.1L engines. These are just plastic. Here you can see the difference.

Here's the 6.1L, I painted the top black piece above the coils.

And here's the 5.7L, you can see there's no coils to cover over. Then again, I'd have to check on a 5.7L to see what under that cover :D
