i was told the hemi tick is normal and if you turn the tow/haul on or shift the autostick into 5th it will go away. unfortunatly it doesnt. im starting to think it really is an exhaust leek or something. whatever it is its annoying as hell when im driving with the windows down

Its the Hemi tick. Its the normal operating sound of the MDS. Press the tow haul button to reduce the noise but I must warn you, you will see a reduction anywhere from a half mpg to a full mpg.
Its still going to be there but not as loud. Its something that you are going to have to deal with like the rest of us did. Unfortunately. :(

Mine mostly went away by using the correct oil.
5W20 genuine Mopar oil. (I cannot find aan equivelent aftermarket oil)

if i had to guess thats whats been used in my jeep because the carfax showed dealer service every 5k. im assuming thats what the stealerships use. is the mopar full synthetic?

I can only assume it is full synthetic given it's cost? (lol, but you never know!)
A 5W20 oil you would have to think would be sythetic.
DO NOT assume the dealer uses Mopar oils, mine doesn't! They use a much cheaper (and incorrect viscosity) oil, because they say "most people aren't annoyed by the tik". So basically, you specifically need to ask for Mopar Genuine oils.
twice now my dealer has incorrectly used another oil when I specifically asked for 5W20, and they changed it for me without charging the extra :D

I use royal purple 5/20 syn and mine still sounds like it has an exhaust leak. It sounds like the doughnut gasket on the headers is leaking. The way it sounds reminds me of an old 1970s ford truck or something lol.
I have really thought about having the cats cut and high flow cats put back on and a magna flow muffler on mine, and see if that does not fix the problem.
I know the mds makes it sound funny etc, but even when I start mine I can hear it make a puff of wind sound. And when the mds kicks from 4 to 8 I can hear it make the wind puff sound.

I have never heard this hemi tick before. I don't know anyone with a hemi though to check it and listen. It must be pretty apparent if people are complaining about it.

I was wondering about this as well.. That sound is way annoying and I almost thought is was the manifold causing the sound. I seen another similar model drive by the other day with the same sound was coming from under there, in fact thats what made me even turn my head to look at what was driving bye. It really sucks to be driving a nice Jeep and you got this ugly ticking sound attracting attention to what’s wrong with your Jeep questions.

it has nothing to do with he oil etc. guys....its the fuel injectors and fuel rail making the noise. Totally normal on a hemi

This is exactly the way I feel about it too. I read a while ago on another forum that is is a valve engineering problem and putting slightly larger exhaust valves makes it go away. I'm SURE it's an exhaust leak or something because when I got the jeep I couldnt hear it at all and now I can easily tell when it goes in and out of MDS mode from inside the cabin with the windows up.

Well I don't have a Hemi, I have the 4.7. I have a fluttering sound too when I put the windows down. Not sure what it is, but I did fix the problem by throwing on a magnaflow muffler.:)

FWIW, I developed the "HEMI tick" after 10-15K miles, -or- at least that's when I noticed it. After too many years of loud machinery, I now "feel" machinery behavior more than "hear" it.
I changed from dealer dino oil & MOPAR filter to Castrol Syntec full synthetic and K&N oil filter at 36K miles. Noted significant decrease in the HEMI tick. I'm always leary as to whether-or-not this might be a self-fulfilling expectation.
I have experienced a decrease in oil consumption with full synthetic oil. Used 2 qts every 5K miles before. About 1/2 of that now. :)
The key is the 5W-20 oil for proper MDS function. Interesting that my MDS has been misbehaving for a long time and the dealer cannot diagnose the root cause. Had to have O2 Sensor 1/1 replaced under warranty, and the same code (P0133) is back now. Now, the technician thinks it's an exhaust leak in driver's side manifold but needs Chrysler's OK to repair it under warranty. I can't see evidence of or hear the "leak". :wtf:???
Keep trying to tell them I have an electronic ghost running around in there since the MDS alternately functions and doesn't. Gas Mileage goes +/- 25%. I can clearly hear and feel when MDS kicks in & out. Coincides directly with the EVIC "FUEL SAVER" readout. Sometimes the idle is rough & uneven; other times it's perfectly smooth as an 8-cylinder engine should be.
Been pouring through these forums looking for some clues, but no joy so far. One interesting thing that the dealer passed on: Older cars with electronic controls had their components hard-wired into the appropriate control module. For instance, all motor sensors went to the Power Control Module. The WK Jeep has its functions wired into the closest node point, then into the CAN bus to communicate with the correct control module. Makes it much more difficult to figure out what's happening (...or not happening). :(
Did read about a restrictor plate inserted into the EGR valve outlet; it purports to cure the HEMI tick. I think if it were that simple, Chrysler would have done it a while back. Also, don't get caught with these aftermarket quick cures in place while at the dealer or Chrysler will deny any warranty coverage, then it becomes your $$ for diagnostics & repairs.
Just my $0.02 worth.

You still may have the wrong oil in it. Some dealers (quite a few) are notorious for putting in bulk 10W-30 or 10W-40, unless otherwise specified by the owner. When I bought my 06 GCO about 5 months ago, the dealer was proud to announce that they had just changed the oil for me. The invoice showed 10W-30. I drove it for about 1500 miles that way and the MDS didn't work properly. I know because I have another Hemi vehicle and they were working completely different. Changed the oil to Mobil One and everything got better. If you have your oil changed by anyone, try to watch them put the right stuff in. The dealer would be the last place I'd take mine.

I've tried one of those too, it did nothning at all which wasnt surprising.

Sounds like a hydraulic valve lifter that is stuck on a 1970's era 300+ cu. in. V-8 engine.
