View Full Version : Damage not disclosed by my dealer

As a few may know, I recently purchased a new (to me) 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8.

I purchased it from Maryland sight unseen as I am in Texas. The dealership stated there was some slight rash on the wheels, so I requested pictures of the damage. I posted about the wheel rash here. (http://www.cherokeesrt8.com/forums/showthread.php?t=55917) They stated everything else was great.

I decided to accept the slight imperfections with the wheels and purchased the vehicle.

My salesman at the dealership stated that the vehicle would be picked up that day and delivered Monday 8/15/11.

I did not receive a call from the transport company on Monday. I had to call them Monday evening and they stated that the vehicle would be delivered sometime Tuesday.

Today, I did not receive a call this morning, so I called at 1100 hours. The dispatcher stated that the driver was just leaving Beaumont, TX. Beaumont is 90 miles east of where I am, so the vehicle should be here around 1300 hours. AWESOME. I am pumped.

I take off work at 1200 hours just to be sure that he does not get there early and he will not have to wait.

1300 hours comes and goes. 1400 hours comes and goes. 1500 hours, 1600 hours and finally at 1630 hours the driver of the transport calls and says he will be at my house in 10 minutes.

No matter he is 24 hours late, I am happier than a pig in sh!t. My rig is finally arriving. After his call grab my camera and run outside to wait in the 109 degree here in Texas.

I start snapping pictures as he is rolling up. I snap, snap, snap......WTF??????????

The front clip is bent and scratched as if it was in a collision or it hit a LARGE curb when parking.

I am now pissed. I start taking pictures of the damage. There are two "stabilizer" bars that support the bottom of the front fascia that are bent all to hell. The paint has flaked off at the bends and there is quite a bit of rust where the paint is missing.

This leads me to believe that the damage was there before the transport company picked up the vehicle.

Still, I notated the damage on the BOL for the transport company and told them they may be responsible because the damage was not notated when the vehicle was picked up.

Additionally, there are some serious scratches on the driver's side mirror. These scratches were notated by the driver of the transport company so they were definitely there when he picked it up.

I called my salesman with the dealership and explained the situation and he asked me to email him pictures of the damage.

It appears that the dealership failed to disclose two glaring dents in the front fascia and some serious scratches on the driver's side mirror.

I understand that this is a used car, but I also expect the dealership to disclose this kind of damage to me.

What kind of ramifications do I have available if the dealership does not fix the damage and make this right? Any advice is extremely welcomed.

Wow that really sucks!!! I am not sure what type of recourse you have on a transaction like yours. As bad as I feel for you in this matter a part of me thinks "shame on you" for buying this Jeep sight unseen and especially for taking the word of the salesman. I mean these people{salesmaen} are the scum of the earth and would try to sell a drowning man a cup of water if they could. I hope all works out for you.

While I will agree with you, I will offer up this bit of info. There was not a low mileage 2010 within 1500 miles of me.

Round trip tickets to and from plus a hotel room would have been in the $1000 range.

I figured that there could not be much more than $1000 in damage that I am unable to see based on the pictures that were provided to me, so I took the gamble and I lost.

I figure that this shouldn't me more than $1500 or so to repair and that is on the high side, so the most I am out will be $500.

Looks like they did a really $hitty job of cleaning it! But hey, you've got an SRT now...that's gotta make you feel good. Hopefully they will at least send you a new front bumper and supports.

Salesmen are pigs. They probably did the damage at the dealer "test driving" it

bumper and wheels are trashed. Was there no pics of the Jeep before you bought it? It looks like the support arms have been bent for awhile due to the rust. The scratches on the mirror will buff out no problem.

I did get pictures of the vehicle. They did not show the damage to the bumper.

As for the wheels. They are just dirty. I already cleaned one up. There are a FEW slight rash spots but they are very small and not noticeable.

Scottina06

ok cool on the wheels. I thought you said the wheels were stained as well and peeling. Good deal. Looks like you need a front bumper and thr two support brackets. Gonna cost ya about $1000 for new parts and paint.

that sucks so bad, how could the salesman sell you that and not think that when you get it your not gonna be pissed. like did he think you wouldnt notice the huge dent in the bumper? the mirror is slightly forgettable as its a used car and i would think some scratches would be present, although he should have told you about them. good luck with everything hopefully they arent bad about getting fixed and hopefully this is the only thing he neglected to tell you

Was this from a Jeep dealer? Big name dealership? Or just a used car lot?

cobra281

From a Chrysler Dealership. Quite a large dealership from what I understand.

ChrisL1976

I could see a used car lot pulling something like this, but a Chrysler dealership should have disclosed this. I know when I just got my CPO jeep a few months ago, it had a huge checklist of items that look over and I believe obvious body damage was on there.
I would seriously go and get a couple estimates to fix it. Start making phone calls.

Chrylser is pushing the internet sales thing and if they start getting a bad reputation for selling crap cars online....it will not look good.

ChrisL1976
08-17-2011, 09:37 AM
Even not CPO....it should have been disclosed. Thats as bad as bait and swtich. If the dealership blows you off, I would call chrysler direct. I am sure the dealership has a Facebook page, as does Chrysler....Squeaky wheel gets the grease.

ChrisL1976

I am not sure how far you want to push this, but did you get a loan for the vehicle? The bank may have an issue with the damage as well. They may have a little more pull than you do. I am sure they were under the assumption the vehicle was damage free.

Assuming you have a loan on it.

Bummer!

The dealer needs to make it right.

You need these parts to fix it.

Front Bumper Cover for your year
Chrome Strip Insert For Bottom Of Bumper Grill
Front Supports Bars ( Requires 2 )

and it painted!

about 1K to fix is right on unless you find one off of here for an 08+. Then sell your damaged one to someone wanting to mess around with it.

Or find someone with a plastic welder and use almost boiling water and or a heat gun to get it back to shape.

I'd want NEW though.

I bought a vehicle from Tampa, FL and had it shipped from there to Ky through DAS. They notd every possible damage on the outside and inside of the car. They went over it with a fine tooth comb. If NONE of that damage was noted on the orginal...then it was probably done in transport.

Honestly i am not surprised. When i went to buy my WK i looked at 2 or 3 different wks and my sales man (its a well known large jeep dealership) could not tell the difference between tires and wheels let alone that some were chrome clad vs machined finish. There are some pretty dopey sales man out there and being where that damage is i could see it being missed, BUT they still need to fix it for you, somebody should have noticed it at some point.

Sorry for the bad deal! I do agree that this looks like driver issues.

Robert Palmer

I agree with Joel.

Hot shot truck driver put that SRT face forward originally and I guarantee he speeded up the ramp and that happened.

I've seen them load and unload these trucks like that.

When they are brand new, the factory hangs from the mirror a placard to load and unload the vehicle slowly on and off the trailor because the nose is so low to the ground.

Obviously jackass here didnt listen.

Since it seems that the damage to the bumper and mirror is caused by the driver i am sure you will get that repaired but they prolly wont do shiat for the wheels. They will say its normal wear and tear or some BS. I tried that once before on a used vehicle cause 2 wheels were brand new and the pass side 2 wheels were peeling worse then a mexican sunburn. I got told to pound sand.

Set of toyo proxes ST2's in the 275/315 size: 1100 installed
New Bumper: 1000
Paint: 500
Painting of mirror: 250

IMO about 2850-3000 worth of repairs. Then again I'm going with NYC labor for painting prices so I may be a little off. lol

cobra281

Well I now have three estimates. It seems they all called and matched their prices.

Replacing the bumper and repainting the mirror will be$1,550 to $1,625.

Repairing the bumper and repainting the mirror will be $675 to $750.

I had one repair shop tell me that I should not replace the bumper. He said that the factory paints the bumper just after it is freshly formed and the paint bonds better at the factory. If I repaint the bumper, the paint will flake off in any future impacts or with bugs.

I have never heard of this before. Its he full of it?

The price in a new tire is $530.

I will send this over in the morning and keep everyone updated with how the dealership replies.

Geez dude that blows...hopefully it'll all get fixed. I've had both my front and rear bumper "reconditioned" after I was rearended. Some place here heats em up and takes all the paint off and removes all the dents, and they come out like new. If it's actually torn they should replace the bumper. In the interim while you're waiting you could straighten those front braces real easy, which may make the front look better. And like someone said heat that dent with maybe a blow drier and it may come out a bit.

Other than all this horse$hit congrats on your beast...it does look good otherwise.

Good luck!

Most bumpers are full of mold release resin when they are first made and if you don't wait for that to work it's way out or bake it a few times and clean it very well to get it out, the paint won't stick. Basically, exactly opposite of what he said.
I had to bake one new bumper 7 times to get the paint to stick to it.

Bummer man, I can see the damage in the dealer pics.

If you want to get a new front end this is a good ebay seller. Email them and they will hook you up! This is a rear bumper but they can get all the parts.

Beyond all that. Replace those Runcraps (tires)!

The drivers side front is probably seperating on the inner side and they ride like crap.

A set of 275/315's will ride so much nicer and a ton cheaper too. Just get a fix a flat kit and a cigarette lighter powered air comp.

I went with Nitto INVO's, but these are NOT to be used in the snow/slush (winter).

I am in Houston, so snow will not be a problem. I'll email that guy to see if he has a front bumper for me. Thanks for the link.

The invos are really nice, but what do you think about the vreds?

As for the fix a flat kits, won't the ruin the tpms sensors?

Oops not fix-a-flat (as in the spray in crap, it will ruin your sensors) I meant a plug and patch kit, sorry man

Never ran a set of the Vreds. Checkout BlackOps Autoworks for those and anything carbon fiber.

Couple questions:

Are after market bumper covers the same quality as factory?

Can a small crack in the bumper cover be repaired?

Yes there is evidently. My dealership said they can get an aftermarket one for $600 less and that is why they took $600 off their offer.

I'll post a pic of the crack in a few minutes.

Here is the picture of the crack on the front bumper. It is right by the chrome piece on the driver's side of the bumper cover.

Sorry for the poor picture quality, but my flash was wigging the picture out when reflecting off of the chrome.

they are FULL OF CRAP! If there is a aftermarket alternative for the SRT bumper...its the first Ive heard of it. Tell them to PROVE it. There is a fiberglass srt knockoff on ebay...but thats not a replacement for a polyurethane bumper.

That crack should not be fixed, IMO Some can be, as Scott said, but that is not one that should be fixed. It's in a bad spot and would probably never be right.

And tell them to go **** themselves, it came with a stock bumper and it should be fixed with a stock bumper.

I wholeheartedly agree with you, but I think they are firm on their offer of $1500, so I have to decide if it is worth taking the $600 hit or not.

Keystone is LKQ. I have a friend at the Blacklick, OH LKQ. I will check for you tomorrow.

Scottina06

LKQ is a parts salvage company that has parts yards all over the US. They also own Keystone aftermarket parts. I have a friend/contact with them at Blacklick, OHio facilty. I will call and check with him about the bumper.

I received a check to cover the costs of the repairs. I am very happy with the outcome.

It is a surprise there are still honorable dealers out there.
