View Full Version : Good modifications for a 3.7??

Ok, so I have the puny little 3.7 baby engine. I just installed the Powerwire from Airram.com last week, and now I'm addicted to speed. I wish that I had the hemi or atleast a 4.7, but I don't and I'm stuck with this 3.7 so I want to try to maximize the power in my rig. I honestly do not know a whole lot about engines so I would like to hear everyone's input on the best performance modifications I could do. I'm not looking to spend thousands of dollars though, so keep it thrifty. CAI? Exhaust? Spark plugs? Jetchip? which ones? etc. Thanks.

Unfortunately there is not much to be done to the 3.7 besides and intake and exhaust, and there is not much if any power gained with those two mods. You can also have your computer tuned by B&G.
Next step would to add a turbo, but that would run you like 5 boxes of ziti.
Oh only 5 boxes of ziti....I can afford that....
What does having the computer tuned do? and how do you go about doing it?

06-03-2009, 12:21 PM
I've heard that in order to maximize the full power of the intake you need to really open up the pipes which means getting a new exhaust/catback system. How much truth is behind that? Will it really make a difference?
Also, can someone explain to me what a Jetchip it and what it does. Thanks.

Hrm, First things first, I really should stop browsing this site, I'm just being broke thinking about all the stuff I need to do. HAHA.
Not really performance wise, but it makes it sound meaner. I did notice a difference with both, but it wasn't anything too drastic.
That sounds like something I would like, I just want a little more roar in the Jeep. Plus I feel like I'm slower since I have 2 chrome bars on both the front and the back, and looking to put the side nerf bars sooner or later. So you say around 400? For everything? And can you elaborate more on this muffler system you were talking about. Greatly appreciate it.
Also, I took the notion of adding the 3.7L in the sig. I hope you guys didnt' mind.

Well having a 08 3.7 jgc. I have to say not much can we do. But To save money I went with a universal intake from advanceautoparts. Paid like 60ish bucks. Upgraded to a bigger apc filter. I can def. say I can tell a big difference above 20mph. Not to mention better throttle response and increased mpg. I want to do alot to it but have to put it on hold cause closing on a house.
It sounds mean at higher rpms also.

I actually wanted the 3.7 when I was looking for the one I have now. This is my 3rd GC, had a 93 and a 94 previously. Last one had the 5.2 which had alot of balls though I was at the pump every day with traveling for work. The very first thing I did to my WK was the K&N CAI with the Magnaflow SS catback. They go hand in hand IMO. More air in more air out. If I could do it again I would just go to the local auto store and buy the basic intake tubes they sell and just get the K&N filter and save alot of $$. And also instead of paying top dollar for the Magnaflow name I would of just gone to the local exhaust shop and had them weld on a straight thru muffler with a larger pipe and saved money also. I actually bought just a SS magnaflow muffler for about 80 bucks and was going to pop it on until I went under the car and noticed the flange its connected to and no auto store had anything to match it. I went with the catback then to install it myself, but got lazy and brought it to a shop anyways to be installed, where the owner told me he could of made one for half price. Go figure, live and learn.
As far as the Jet chip, from all my research they are useless because after awhile the cars computer learns its there and recalibrates everything. Face it, its a 6 banger, not going to get much more out of it unless you tear it apart and pump some money into it. Prob better off trading it in for a larger motor.

The auto stores near me carry a no name brand with just the tubes alone or a whole kit for very cheap, but im not sure of the quality of the filter it comes with. Its alot cheaper to built your own intake. Just have to take measurements and plan it out so it fits and runs to the stock air box location. I only said get a K&N filter because they are a good name, though theres a few good brand named filters out there. I might even look into an oil less filter, because I do notice when taking my filter off to clean it I reach in the tube and im wiping out a little bit of oil. Its not dripping with oil, but theres def oil in there.
As for an exhaust, the shop I went to had a whole wall stacked with flow master and magnaflow mufflers. I would of had him use one of those and just bend new larger pipes coming off the muffler going back. Then just buy a nice polished SS or chrome tip. Instead I paid $427 shipped for my SS magnaflow cat back, but at least its SS so hopefully will never have to replace it.
IMO if you dont plan on doing an exhaust then just get the K&N panel filter, I had that installed and noticed a little more pick-up. A week later I decided to do an exhaust too so I got the K&N CAI at the same time, figured what the hell right and do it right. As far as power wires or performance chips I dont really know enough about them, but I think its just a gimmic and if it really did anything Jeep would of already had something on like that.

I have come across air intake kits on ebay, looks like someone made it themselves useing the flex tube thats on the stock intake already and comes with a K&N cone filter. From my research a smooth tube is better than the flex tubing for air flow.
When I opened the box for my K&N CAI I was actually surprised at how basic it really is. Plus I had to put the whole thing together myself anyways, came with a bag of nuts and bolts and hose clamps. Oh, and there instructions are wrong, I found two things they have down wrong. I put the whole thing together in my livingroom expecting to just go out and pop it in, then I noticed a rubber bumper was the wrong size and had to be switched and the bracket that connects near the coolant tank was backwards and shown wrong on the drawings.

I am kinda pissed as well with my AFE intake. I did not know that some intakes remove the air box at the throttle bodya dn some dont. I paid $20 more for my afe CAI then i could have bought a K&N 63 series and that eliminated the air box. Now i am stuck with the AFE kit. So i am removing the air box at the Throttle body, i bought another silicone coupler, and i am getting some tube to connect the AFE intake to the throttle body. Then when i get extra cash i am going to buy a K&N cone for this. I am not a fan of the Dry filter that AFE uses, so i am going to buy a K&N of the same dimensions.
SO, I will have a AFE Dry filter for sale soon as well as a used K&N cone filter and a used K&N Drop in filter (stock replacement.)
I like the opiled filters. Just a matter of preference not quality.

Yeah I know. Just my thing is I no offence to anyone but that bumper IMO is ment for the SRT. The air dam is painted on my WK so I'm ok with it. Same with the mopar srt body kit. It looks awesome but I don't want to put on a front that my car is something that it's not. Especially with a 3.7. the 4.7 and 5.7 guys are up there with HP's and you can run with them. Same with the wheels. I love the SRT reps but thats the signaure for the SRT and there are so many other style wheels I could get that would look nice on my jeep. It's kinda like putting a M badge on a BMW or AMG, Shelby cobra on a MB or Stang. No offence to anyone thats just my feelings.

OMG people enough with the 3.7 bashing. This thread is about good mods for a 3.7. I have a 3.7 and I could have easy got a 4.7 or HEMI for a like 2k more or got a used 5.7 for less than what I paid, or even a used SRT for 30k. Yes at times I do wish I got the 5.7 but I'm happy with my 3.7 and the limited's features I have which I'd rather have than a faster engine. Everyone knows a 3.7 will never be as fast as a HEMI. I think he just want's know what will put his a step above stock 3.7's and give him a little more pep. Please don't take this out of context. Black Mamba, Find your self a local street shop or performance shop, ask for a magnaflow or other muffler of your choice, and ask them to cut out the resonator that is in the system. You will not be disappointed. It wont be a V8 sound but you will deff turn heads. Stay away from flowmaster, its too tingy and will droan you to death on a V6, it does not have enough deepness to it.
That or drive up here, and go to the shop that did my exhaust, he will let you try as many mufflers as you want and it wont break the bank (minus gas for coming up here) and it will be fully welded and warrantied.

This is the shop that did my exhaust, i have only been to the one in town where the owner works so i dont know how great the other shops are but we could have a NH meet and greet/ exhaust festival.
He also works fast. it took 45 mins to do my exhaust including tearing out the old setup, and fully welding and inspecting the new one for leaks and such. He will do anything you can dream up. Very very reasonably priced.
http://www.louscustomexhaust.com/
My side exhaust was $180 fully welded, stainless steel. He said had i done the dual SRT8 style, (spare tire delete) it would have been $250.
His in house 409 stainless steel brand muffler is essentially a magnaflow and it sounds great. I had one on my 4.0 I6 Xj.
And he does not mind if you chill in the shop and watch.

I have the turbo series on my Wk and had that on my XJ as well.
If you guys made a trip up here, half way here you would be like "this better be good" on the way back its going to be like music to your ears the entire way home, no radio.
OMG people enough with the 3.7 bashing. This thread is about good mods for a 3.7. I have a 3.7 and I could have easy got a 4.7 or HEMI for a like 2k more or got a used 5.7 for less than what I paid, or even a used 6.1 for 30k Yes at times I do wish I got the 5.7 but I'm happy with my 3.7 and the limited's features I have which I'd rather have than a faster engine. Everyone knows a 3.7 will never be as fast as a HEMI. I think he just want's know what will put hin a step above stock 3.7's and give him a little more pep. Please don't take this out of context. I don't mean to come off rude or anything but some of you guys gotta chill... We all come here for the same reasons which is our love for jeeps (in Dylans case to be the token village idiot) LOL J/K so lets focus on that...
Well put. Hemi= Smaller Dicks
They need to make up for it somehow.:slapfight:

Sorry for the crappy vids, my little point and shoot does not take very good video, too mush wind distortion.

the 3.7 will still sounds great because of its V setup they sounds like a lighter tone of a v8. The inline 6 always had a sound of its own.
Also if you have a resonator that can be removed it will seriously make a huge difference.

It was $180 for the side exhaust, like i said it would be more to do a setup out the back cause there is alot more bending and welding that needs to be done.

No resonator on 3.7L Exhaust.

Heh, I said this a few months ago. ;)

Agreed. I thought we were supposed to leave this with StreetJeeps? Oh and see my signature. ;)
To make this thread short, throw an intake which completely scraps the resonator, a nice exhaust and enjoy your Jeep. Makes a hell of a difference. So much of a difference, there's hardly a (around town) difference between the 3.7L and 4.7L. Highway is a different story though.

I highly suggest buying a used SRT exhaust and having it modded to your liking. The bends that are needed to go over the suspension are difficult to achieve and expensive for a shop to do custom. Your in the NE Kyle....there are all kinds of SRT's there to scavenge on their take off exhausts. I bought my second SRT exhaust from Don at Champoin Jeep for $100, new take off and he delivered it to my house.....LOL. Just a suggestion when you go for the rear exit like you plan---
