View Full Version : Vinyled pillars
This is next on my on do list. I know there's only a few of those with this done, but I would like to know if you or the installer removed any of the trim to wrap the vinyl around the pillar or if it's just laid on top of the paint and terminated when it reaches the trim...?

Just got quoted $15 for a 24"x36" sheet of matte/flat black vinyl from a local shop. Seems like a fair price and big enough sheet, no?

i asked Pete for 18 inches by 60.

Wow, so are you thinking 36" is going to be too short?
Any idea how much Pete would charge for an 18x60 + shipping?
What color did you go with?
Any idea if others have removed the window trim?

im waiting for an answer right now Matt. I sent him the email yesterday. I way over measured.
but I was thinking I always want a factory edge at the top. and you need somwe overlap to trim to gert under the trim. and I want to make sure I give at least one do-over...........
Im hoping to do this for 20/25 shipped but I cant guarantee it yet.
the only trim I would take off is the lower horizontal. the rest you work with.

Ok, gotcha. I just guesstimated those numbers, but I'm going to go out and measure now and see what I'm comfortable with. I agree, at least one do-over.
Isn't there a slight curvature at the top of where the vinyl will be terminated (therefor negating the need to always use a factory edge)?
I guess I'll check when I go out and measure.
As far as getting the vinyl to flush with the trim -- I'll take off the lower horizontal trim, but remember that the rear trim is all one piece with the glass, so that's probably going to stay. I'm guess I'll just try to tuck maybe an 1/8-1/4 of overlap into the window trim.
Okay, so I'm with you -- I'm going with 18"x50" -- I want about 5" per 1/2 pillar (10" per pillar), so that will leave me with an extra 10" (good for two do-overs, haha). And you're right, the top is flat, so factory edge for that. Just quickly looking at the moldings and trim it looks as though a lot of it can be easily tucked and secured. I'm going to pick some up today (assuming the color is a good match - they say it's a matte/flat black).
I'll keep you guys updated and either install it today or tomorrow. I'll do a detailed how-to with lots of pics for reference.

Nice!! This is a mod I've been wanting to do for a while, just never took the initiative, lol. Baby Range Rover, here I come, haha.
Off to check out this vinyl!
I hope it's a good color/match *crosses fingers*
Picked up the vinyl -- the matte black looks like a perfect match when held against the black trim on the WK. I'm pretty sure I broke the last of my hobby knives so I'll have to pick one up tomorrow. I should have this done tomorrow and I'll try and get a ton of pics and explain the process I use in detail (How-to).

body shops have masking tape that has like rigid plastic on one side. thinner than a cc but stiff plastic. they use it to hold the trim open....
use water under the viny while positiong and to help remove the bubbles. a cc or similar to smooth it out.

What does cc mean? :o Most of the trim comes off pretty easily.
So you're saying that the surface doesn't need to be 100% dry for the vinyl to effectively adhere? How does the water eventually escape?

Ok, cool. I actually just came across the same method you're describing...
http://www.ehow.com/how_2285387_car-truck-using-wet-method.html
My concern is that any dampness or water between the vinyl and the car would cause the vinyl to lift... I guess that's not the case though.

check youtube if not
No. I will check it out.
Thanks Rob!

good deal.
Benno! Would you be able to go out to your Jeep and snap some pics of the vinyl in the door jam (and where it terminates), vinyl in the pillar area, and area where the vinyl reaches the window molding(s)?
I'm hoping to tackle this tomorrow and some close up pics would be awesome!

Here you go Matt....
This is the rear door meeting the cargo glass surround. I'm pulling the surround back quite hard to show the vinyl going well into the groove;

This is with a rear door opened, pulling the rubber back showing how the vinyl goes around the corner a bit and also how it's as neat as possible around the cargo glass moulding;
http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q301/bennythewoo/JEEP/DSCF4241.jpg
Here is the rear door toward the front of the Jeep showing where we finished the vinyl. I didn't remove chrome trims. We DID experimaent with vinyl kind of behind the trims but it accentuated the gaps a little, imo, better to leave the colour there to continue the chrome line. If you had black window trims I would say yes, definately put the vinyl in this area.

And this just about says it all really, I took some extra time just to get this pic for you mate;

HAHAHAHA!
Thanks a lot Ben for taking the time and getting the pics!! I definitely feel a lot more comfortable now that I have a little more direction.
I'm going to go wash my Jeep and tackle this after. I've got a camera in hand so I plan to take a lot of pics of every step and (assuming the pillars come out correctly, lol) do a How-To on this.
Almost half way done, lol, I've got 3 of the 4 on the drivers side. Now time for the rear glass pillar -- this is going to be a bitch!. I ended up using the dry method as opposed to the wet method. The wet gave me all sorts of issues, lol. I've taken a lot of pics so far... hopefully I can piece together a decent how-to.
DONE!
Going to go grab some pics... be back soon.

Hey no problem Brad!
I just Googled "vinyl shop" or something like that and found a shop about ten minutes from me. I called them and asked if they a matte/flat/satin black vinyl and they said they had a matte black. So I stopped by, made sure it was a good match, then bought 24"x50" -- I'd buy a little more just in case for screw ups. I had two screw ups and still had enough, but I was down to nothing when I was done.
Here's a link to the exact vinyl and color I have (select 070M at the bottom of the drop-down). Unfortunately it only comes in a 24"x10 yard roll, but I paid 20 bucks for my sheet, so this is a good deal (assuming shipping isn't an arm and a leg), just a lot of vinyl. You could always re-sell what you don't use to another member here.
