View Full Version : Have an SRT Exhaust, Now What?

Finally got my hands on a used SRT8 exhaust set-up, pipes and resinators w/out the muffler which I didnt want. Before anyone says take it to a shop and have it done, I want to do it myself. I want to delete the muffler altogether and just run the SRT parts. So now what, I need a 2.5"ID in/ 2.75"ID dual out 'Y" pipe and a section of 2.5"ID pipe and some clamps im thinking, and also two hangers for the resinators. Do they sell stainless steel pipe local or is online my best bet to buy it?

Right now i have a Magnaflow SS catback exhaust that im happy with sound wise but I want my my WK to look really good and i think having a dual exhaust out the back will do it. I have the Laredo bumper so I think I will need to work on the exhaust tips height back there to make it look good. I was thinking of getting the trailer hitch bezel and cutting the bumper, but now looking at it i was wondering if I can cut out the bumper smaller and install a basic black trim instead. Im going to attempt the install saturday, so any ideas would be helpful.

your gonna have to buy a y pipe since your 3.7 is a single system and you will have to convert it to the dual SRT system. You will also have to have 2 hangers welded onto the rear frame rail to hang the rear tips from. I have pics in the WK section on how to add an srt system to a non srt wk. Its a sticky

Shoot Timmy...I know it would be awesome if you could do it yourself...but you're gonna save yourself a lot of time and headaches if you just take it to muffler shop, and have the fab up the y-pipe for you, weld the hangers in place and all that good stuff...I know its not what you wanted to hear....just my thoughts...

I did see a magnaflow Y pipe online that id at least want to get, then maybe bring it all to a shop and see what they tell me for a price.

Dam I want this thing on right now, to see how it sounds. Hope it sounds good without a muffler. I cant believe how much crap i have already stocked in my basement to keep when I ever do sell this car and change it back to stock. Ughhh

A shop won't charge much to fab up a Y pipe for ya... at least around here they won't. Plus, it will for sure fit and won't run the risk of not fitting if you purchase online. You should compare prices at least.

In my experience, a muffler-less system sounds "out of control", if you will. Just from one experience, so take it however you'd like.

DIY its not hard it's easier with a welder but you can do it with out it. you can have a shop weld the hangers in place. you'll need those done out of house but that would be it.

Dam, FINALLY someone wih the same mentality as me!!! haha. I am going to take it to a shop I went to before where they charged me 50 bucks to install this magnaflow I have on now, but if its over 100 im going to do it myself.
And the Stainless steel magnaflow Y pipe I keep seeing online is about 26 bucks w/free shipping on amazon.com. Im not familiar with exhaust shops, do they usually carry stainless steel pipes and weld them? I want all stainless, even saw some stainless steel clamps I was going to buy.

+1 on the outta control. Timmy, I dunno if you've ever been around an SRT (i'm sure you have) when they get on it, but the stock exhaust is not to BFW. And that's with mufflers AND resonators. Hell, even my stainlessworks 3" has mufflers and resonators. Only thing is mine doesn't have cats. And it sounds BADASS! Livable when you're just driving around, but when you get on it, all hell breaks loose.
IMHO, the resonators smoothe out your tone, but they do little to quiet it. TBH, I'm excited to hear what your 6 sounds like w/o a muffler. LOL, it'll probably be so throaty that it will make my SRT go run to the corner and piss itself.

What are these resos you speak of? :D
In the picture in the first post of this thread, the two things that look like mufflers are actually resonators on the SRT's. The muffler are actually located about a foot in front of where his piping starts, or about a foot behind the cats. They are fundamentally different from the mufflers in terms of what they do to the sound.
Mufflers attempt to baffle or otherwise diffuse the sound, resonators attempt to straighten the airflow to minimize resonance.

Uh oh, so is what people are saying is it will sound really "loud" then? I heard scotts on his video with just the resinators and it sounded good IMO. I could always keep my magnaflow exhaust on and do a Y pipe out after that then, but I was going to copy cat scott and delete the muffler. And what does "BFW" mean? Is this thing going to be loud and maybe give me trouble getting my yearly inspection sticker?
And I actually didnt really knew what the resinators did until you just posted it, I never had resinators on any of my past GC's before.

I was just outside looking under my bumper, is it even going to be possible to have these tips set up in the middle of the bumper like the SRT's do with my Laredo bumper? I planned on cutting it out and installing the trailer hitch bezel, or even just installing a black trim piece over the cut edge. But now im unsure if the top of the resinators will be hitting the bottom of the car, and im stuck with the tips being below the bottom edge of the bumper. dam it.

you could do a quick fab up by removing the spare, sticking some bolts in the holes I show in my thread and hanging the resonators from thsat bolt to get an idea.....

Thats a better idea than I had, I was going to make a platform out of wood to hold the exhaust up there while I figure how and where to mount it. I took my spare out when I got these rims on figuring its useless now anyways being a diff size. I hear you can destroy a differential by running diff size tires, even the size diff between a new and used tire, and with this set-up there is about at least a 1/2" diff in sizing.
I know everyone excpet for Denny says take it to a shop, but I think installing this to fit right in my Laredo bumper will take alot of planning, which will be fun for me.

So this will be the first stock srt exhaust with a laredo bumper then? I have only seen people do srt exhausts with srt bumpers and a dual exhaust on a WK with the pipes sitting below the bumpers, but havent seen an exhaust on a WK that comes out in the middle of the bumper. I just measured again and if i did get the trailer hitch bezel there would be too much empty space on the sides for it to look good I think, so i think I will have to cut the bumper perfectly and sand the edge smooth or get a trim for the cut edge.

BFW = Be F*cked With
Yeah, I think that thing is going to be loud. But you can always try it and see. I could try and get you a sound clip of mine, which is a stainlessworks exhaust: http://www.stainlessworks.net/cart/product_info.php?cPath=382_471&products_id=1516
It has the chambered turbo mufflers AND resonators. These are far from being the loudest mufflers you can get, and mine is still pretty loud. I know my Jeep would be ungodly loud is I didn't have the mufflers.
Of course, I also have the 1-7/8" long-tube headers WITHOUT cats (one of the rare advantages to calling WY home): http://www.stainlessworks.net/cart/product_info.php?cPath=382_471&products_id=1491 These (at least I'm told) make my sound even more aggressive.
I used to think loud was cool but running without mufflers reminds me of the time I had a new exhaust put on my old '78 Ford. I put headers on it and I had to drive about 3 miles to the exhaust shop with nothing (and I mean NOTHING) hooked to it. It was coming straight out the collectors. That was possibly the loudest thing I had ever heard.

Yea, but im sure your definition of loud isnt the same as a normal person scott, Haha. I really dont know anything about resinators and how they work but I would think having two of them on would kinda be like having this magnaflow straight thru muffler I have on it now.
And because of the height of the resinators I dont think I will be able to get it up there high enough to have the exhaust tips coming out the bumper, so i might have to be stuck with it below the bumper, which I guess still looks better than mine now on the right side.
Scott, trying to find your exhaust clip to listen to it again, but i remember it sound good and not too loud.

Awesome, thanks. I must of just listened to it about 30 times right now. I KNOW the true sound and how loud it is isnt coming thru from that video, how loud is it from inside when your driving down back roads and then on the highway? Is it loud enough cops might pull me over you think? Right now im just trying to think if I want to keep my magnaflow muffler on or delete it.
Like today I heard a piece of crap car going down the road that was so loud I could tell they must of had an exhaust leak, and I dont want mine to sound like that.
Guess what im saying is I do want it sounding "powerful" but not like a car with a rusted out muffler, know what i mean??

Im so crazy in the head I kept playing that exhaust clip over and over again while staring at my car wondering if the sound will match the car, and I do think it would sound pretty sick.
Ive come to realize that im stuck with the tips below my Laredo bumper now, because the frame is in the way for me to get it up high enough. I think the only way to have the tips high enough coming out thru my bumper is to delete the resinators with a straight pipe then cut the hangers and have the pipes almost right to the cars frame. I was under there playing with the resinators and see that they are slanted downwards, which is good because I was worried they would be seen, but because my cars lowered I think they should be hidden fairly good.
Im still up in the air if I should keep the magnaflow muffler. If anything I think having the dual srt 2.75" pipes back there it would make the exhaust louder than my single 2.5" pipe right now. Any thoughts?

Yea, I know. But hey thats what I do, think about things before I do them. I very close to installing it now, just want to figure out if I rather leave my magnaflow muffler on or delete it. Took me a few days to accept that the tips will have to be below the bumper, but think it will look pretty good now.
So what is it your saying, you think I should run 2 magnaflow bullet style mufflers with theses srt resinators and tips? Not sure why id go out and buy 2 more magnaflow mufflers when I already have one on right now, and wouldnt having 2 make it sound less loud than it is right now?

With or without resonators, that's your call.
The sound characteristics of the muffler itself (even different mufflers of the same brand name) depend wildly on the setup itself.
The oval Mags (especially those used in the catback kits) are very mellow and dont provide much tone. The round bullet style Mags offer much more of a "raw" tone, all the while still eliminating the undesirable acoustics that come with running straight pipes. IMO, the round ones sound MUCH, MUCH better, and cleaner.
Scott's setup sounds excellent on his 4.7....But you have 2 less cylinders. Even though the engines are very similiar, it's not the same thing. One will sound awesome on a V8, may sound awful on a V6, even if said 6 is based on that V8.
EDIT: I just saw that you were looking to just Y the SRT exhaust in...if you're going to go through the trouble of installing all this, cut the merge off , get an X or H pipe welded in and run the SRT system as true duals...

Not sure what you mean about using an X or H pipe, since I only have one pipe coming off the cat. Right now I have a single pipe system, obviously, and have the 16632 magnaflow catback on it. My decision is if I want to come off after the magnaflow muffler then install a Y pipe back to the two srt resinators and dual tips, or to delete the muffler with a single pipe going to a Y pipe back to the two srt resinators and dual tips. I have a pic of what I have to install above in my first post.
And dont worry, it will be done soon enough.

Im going with deleting the muffler. My inspection sticker is up at the end of the month anyways, so im just going to get it inspected now then put the whole thing on. Paranoid I know, but the last time I went the guy wouldnt pass me because I have a thick black plastic trim around my rear licence plate. Swear to god, he said it was covering the little saying on the bottom and here in MA the same plate numbers are being reproduced and they have different sayings along the bottom. But now I got a Red Sox licence plate, but when I just went down to have him tap out a sway bar bolt I stripped when doing my springs he brought it up again, even with these plates on it. Im not going back to him but I just want it out of the way anyways.

My absolute fav car in the world is the 700hp Saleen S7 twin turbo, I day dream about that car all the time. On the website they say at 160mph it creates enough downforce that it will drive upside down and maintain contact with the road. Looking at the performance specs of it compaired to other exotics the 800hp srt blows away everything from the Enzo to the McLaren F1, but not the S7 in the 0-60. But look at the insane prices compaired to the srt.

They are mass based. Only 2 locations in NH, Manchester and Nashua.
If the shops in Mass give you a high estimate or any issues come up here to the manchester one where the owner works, he will help you out. After all my setup was only $180 installed. He was gonna charge about $100 or less to install your setup in mine. And everything is fully welded and warrantied.

Does the jeep in the video have stock exhaust. B/c, although mine is not anywhere near as fast, I think mine sounds better (SW headers/full exhaust). I know, I know, bold statement. But that's what my girlfriend says. And her mom really likes my jeep, too.
Which sets me up perfectly for some good jokes. Whenever my g/f tries to poke fun at my jeep, I like to tell her, "well, that's not what your mom said!".
Sorry, my bad.

http://www.louscustomexhaust.com/locations.html
They are mass based. Only 2 locations in NH, Manchester and Nashua.
If the shops in Mass give you a high estimate or any issues come up here to the manchester one where the owner works, he will help you out. After all my setup was only $180 installed. He was gonna charge about $100 or less to install your setup in mine. And everything is fully welded and warrantied.
Really, $100 for it installed with stainless steel straight and Y pipes included?? I just saw you post this, ended up working today which I NEVER work on weekends, but hey its all double time so cant complain. $100 with parts doesnt sound bad at all, an SS Y pipe is about $26 and 4' of SS straight pipe is about $50 alone, from what I can find prices for if i order them online.
