I need some advice. I might be going up to Chicago to buy a car.

The deal:
From a certified dealer with a known and trusted reputation.
1999 Ford Crown Victoria PI. 117K miles.
Light metallic blue
Supervisors private ride, not a public service vehicle.
All maintenance documented.
Price:
Originally $2150 + doc fees($200)
The guy dropped $200 during our first conversation, and waived the doc fees to bring the out-the-door price to $1950.
I found a dent in the left rear quarter, so I'm going to ask that he take another $100 off and cover my $75 one-way plane ticket from Nashville to Chicago. I am pretty sure he'll agree.

I can't save any of the pics, but he was not shy about photos. There are 24 of them and they clearly show the dent.

Opinions?
I like CVPI's. I've bragged before I could easily build a Merc. Marauder clone(or better) for less than $8K. Maybe this is a chance to put up or shut up?

Ok, first of all.

My brother bought a 2000 police interceptor and has regreted it since.

they're not fast, his body on frame car has less road feel than my jeep and is just about as fast as my 4.0L.

just about the only thing that car is good for is showing off in front of middle/high shcool kids.

also if you don't like to be stared at then this car is not for you.

OK.
1. I wrote "peeps I respect and love..." that certainly excluded you! (lol J/K bud.)
2. I've already owned a 98 CVPI. It was one of the nicest, most reliable and comfortable rides I've ever had. The only thing I regret about that car was selling it.
3. I guarantee my CVPI would have smoked your 4.0.
4. If you think a CVPI is showing off to high school kids, I have a lower opinion of them than I did before.
5. Dylan. I'm Ron. I'm S.O.T.I. I get stared at anyway.;)

I am only buying a car if I stay. Right now it looks like I am going to, but things could change by this weekend. It seems both China and Japan like to move as slow as Korea when it comes to negotiating contracts. I am going to put my resume in at my sisters Oncology company and see what happens. If they hire me, I'm staying.

A.
LONG.
TIME.

Actually it won't be so bad. I described in another thread she wants to correct her jaw(under-bite), and that takes a tear or so. If she files in Thailand, her visa will take about the same. We think. The problem is, I might have to go there for the interview and if I start a new job right away, they might not like that.

Some ideas I had for this car:

Marauder front bumper: $350
Marauder rear bumper: $200
Paint parts to match, fix the dent, and a quick respray: $1000
Honeycomb police grill: $30- it has the bar grill now(ugly)
Painted calipers: $20
New floor carpet: $175
18" SVT rims/tires: $1000

That's a total of $2775. Add the $1800 +/- I'll pay for the car, and I'd have a pretty good Marauder clone for A little over $4500.

That leaves over $3K for go-fast goodies. I think I can make it outrun a Marauder for that, and stay at my projected $8K...

What snow? I live in middle Tennessee. What little snow we get here melts as fast as it falls.

Besides, When I had my 98 CVPI, I drove it through the worst Chicago blizzard ever, and it performed like a beast. i was passing 4x4's all night. I barely had to slow down.

That's OK. I am from Detroit and spent over 30 years in that area. Even if I was still there, I'd buy this car.

Ron I'm not trying to be a debbie downer but it is like putting lipstick on a pig ()

There are much better cars out there that hasn't been beaten upon all of its life. I'm willing to bet you my next car payment that the PIs were a ex LE car.

Well, there is no guess work involved. A CVPI, by definition, is a LE car. I have no problem with that. You just have to be careful and scrutinize what you buy.

Not all CVPI's see 24/7 street work, and most of those go to taxi companies anyway. It is very easy to tell which cars served where. I would only buy a CVPI from one of 2 dealers I know and trust. They reserve Chief's and low use vehicles for sale to individuals like you and me. The guys I know could easily be compared to the pre-owned department of a high end car dealer. These cars are gone over with a fine-tooth comb.

You missed my other posts where I mention I've already owned one of these and was quite happy with it. Where else can you spend less than $2K and get 200+hp, 3-400K miles of service, a ton of room, with such ease of maintenance? In my 98, I could change the oil, filters, and do a decent tune-up in just over an hour.

Well if thats the case, I know of a 05 or 06 (I forgot the year) CVPI that may or may not be going on sell in just a few weeks or so. It is drk blue and has somewere between 100000K-110000K mile on it. It also may come with bumper guard. I don't know the cost yet but I'll keep you in mind when it goes on sale. It is a LE car but the engine is sound and it don't smell like throw-up  Plus the guy that drives it don't really drive it fast (red line it a lot)

Really, I would buy that one if I wanted a CV but I'm waiting for the Dodge Charger to go on sale :D

For 2 grand I would buy it. Seriously it seems that everyone here has neglected to mention that even with the higher miles (which is nothing for a 4.6 anyway), all of these ex state and county cars have been meticulously cared for their whole lives. Sure they may have been beaten on but they are serviced regularly which in my opinion makes up for it.

Crown Vic's do not die, and the same goes for any 4.6l FoMoCo drivetrain powered car lol. I beat the piss out of my t-bird, and it just keeps asking for more. They are like the pyramids, they dont go away lol

I'm sure he'll want more than my budget will allow, but thanks for the lookout. One of my dealers has 2 Chargers. Both are 07, black, police package equipped. 1 is a 3.5 with 70-ish k miles for $8500, and the other is a hemi with 80-ish k miles for $13,500.

If only I was already working...

There are 2 99 CVPI I am looking at. 1 is light blue with 117K miles, the other is spruce green(interesting), with less than 100K. I think I could get either for just under $2K out-the-door. I just have to make sure I am staying in the USA first.

The other dealer is offering me a 2004(!) with just over 100K for $3200! AND it's black too!
Just out of my reach!

The last LE car he sold, sold for about 2-3K. I think he sales them at the price to put top lights and what not on the new car.

If you stay I would buy it, parts are a dime a dozen, easy to work on, and its capable of reaching 300k miles. Its a no brainer. Besides, your right, they are comfortable. My dad got a '98 Grand Marquis when they first came out and that car was like cruising on air, I loved riding in that thing.

The benefits of marrying a Thai woman, Dylan, is I really don't have to worry about that. Even if it was her most hated car in the world, if it made me happy, she'd be cool with it.

Of course, that makes me want to treat her like a queen. A trick too few American women have figured out.
