View Full Version : Magnaflows get louder over time?

After driving around with the new muffler for awhile now (5x8x18) magnaflow I wouldnt mind it being alittle louder at the lower RPM's. It sounds great when I get on the gas but some more rumble at idle and up to 2k RPM would be nice. Do they get louder over time or do they stay about the time?

i got my magnaflow 5x11x22 installed about a month ago and have noticed that's it is quieter now. you probably didn't want to hear that. it's loud when you get on it and right before gear changes but hardly noticeable when cruising. the 1st 500 miles or so it was much more noticeable. i realize it's a different size muffler too.

Sorry, but this is why I bought the Magnaflow. Calm and quiet until you put your foot into it.

I was hoping to be heard 3 blocks away as I rolled up the street setting off car alarms with girls waving to me. That kind of loud. :D I mean its got sound to it especially when I get on it but Im use to a Mustang gt with 2.5 duals, 2 chamber flowmasters and no cats loud.

They tend to get a little louder over time, but I don't know if its the kinda loud you just described up there. If you want loud, then a 14x4" round Magnaflow, like in the video link Ryan posted...should be right up your alley!

I almost forgot to put in my .02, lol.
I have had 2 different Magnaflows (one was a 5x8x18), and both have gotten slightly louder over a course of about 5-10k miles. it's due to a change in the composition of the sound absorbing material they use. Call it "break in". After that, the noise does not get any louder. The difference between new and "broken in" is negligible to marginal at best.

I dont see any vid Ryan? I have to admit the 18in sounds awesome when I get on it or use the autostick. Its pretty quiet at idle and cruising speeds which I guess is good since I use it for work sometimes. If I ever got an SRT though I'd want it to roar at all RPM's.

In that case you want to trade that little SRT8 for a big powerful 4.7? :D

Yeah that does sound great, do you think the cats and 3in pipe make much of a difference over stock cats and 2.5 in pipe or is it mostly the muffler? Nice WJ by the way I have an 04' that looks just like it minus the lift and mods in my driveway.

It is a little bit of both, but this muffler does very little to actually muffle the sound. The 4.7 needs a 3" exhaust to breath properly. Thanks for the compliments.

Thinking you should of went with Flowmaster for the sound your looking for. I dont know that much or have much experience, but from what I do know Magnaflows all sound just how you described, I know mine did when I had it on. Can always get a cheap Thrust turbo muffler and see how it sounds, there like 30 bucks.

Its a common misconception that Magnaflows are "quiet". The catback kits certainly are, but they have a whole line of universal mufflers that can sound anywhere from mild to wild. IMO they don't do enough to advertise that, compared to say Flowmaster via their 30/40/50/70 series, etc

Actually the more im driving it the more im liking it. It has a nice sound and reminds me of a muscle car vs. most trucks with exaust that sound really lopey? I guess due to the cam's trucks have but the magnaflow on the 4.7 sounds really sporty and you wouldnt guess it as a truck if you heard it coming down the road. I can still hear my radio but when I give it some gas people know im coming. =D If anyones looking for an exhaust as loud as you can go IMO with still enjoy your radio i'd recommend the 18". I'll try to get a driveby clip once the weather clears up.

I think the muffler that comes with the catback system is too large to give off a nice "loud" sound. I think mine is 22", too big IMO. The 18" would prob be the best. But now I like my srt set-up with no muffler and just the resinators, almost similar to the sound I wanted originally like the Infinitys have, I luv that cars exhaust note. I can pick that sound out anywhere just hearing it coming down the street.

Yeah i figured the 22in would be way to quiet thats why I went with the 18in and im glad I did, I might have even went with slightly louder had I known but im pretty happy with the 18in. I like to listen to the radio and I get the best of both worlds with the 18" but it will roar if I get on it. Im guessing the 22in has to be pretty quiet?

The 22" is def an improvement in sound over the stock thats like 3' long, lol. But my radio goes so loud I cant even hear this srt set-up w/no mufflers. I also did ALOT of soundproofing in the doors and cargo area so its pretty quiet in the cabin now.
