View Full Version : What don't you like about the 2011 model or what do you think is missing?

Hey all,

Personally, I would have liked a new transmission on the 2011 model.....perhaps a 6 speed or 7 speed given that a lot of the competition already has such a tranny....

....this would have possibly improved fuel efficiency and performance.....I realize some auto websites suggest that this feature is possibly coming in future models but I think the GC is already behind the competition in this regard....

White WK Swagga

6 speed would be nice. I love the new options and features.

I think the outside looks too generic like a combo of SUV's that are already out.
I wish they kept the bubble look of the current WK headlights a little.

It should have a 7 speed for 2012 or 2013.. not sure though. I really WISH they didn't blend the lights into the tailgate... not Jeep-like at all.

Other than that I think they did a great job with it.. yeah it doesn't have a front diff which is another downfall but until I see it in person/test drive one, I think it's a phenomenal upgrade over the current WK... and I hop that it stays relatively the same size. Jeep has done a good job with keeping their GCs compact b/c that's what the customers have always asked for.

Who's hating? This thread is supposed to be about what we don't like, correct? From an appearnce & appointment standpoint, my initial impression is much more positive than my initial impression of the current WK. I'm no engineer, but my belief is that the open front diff is going to result in a degradation of 4x4 performance in comparison to earlier Grand Cherokees. If that turns out to be the case, and I'm not sure how it couldn't be, that's going to be a pretty big dislike for me.

B T C

I don't believe I've ever said that, but I'm pretty sure I won't be buying one. I'm hoping my WJ lasts for another 10 years. If I were in the market, the open front diff would be a big consideration. I really hope they offer some sort of LSD in the front at some point.

Well, according to initial specs, it is getting bigger (once again--remember the 2005 was bigger than the 2004)... length 189.8" vs 186.7"....and body width 76.3" vs 72.6" (this was done to increase rear seat area and cargo space behind rear seats but interestingly, it did not increase total cargo capacity)...

I agree with you....don't like that it is getting bigger........

So the new 6cyl is a 3.6ltr pentastar which should get 2 more MPG's and 280hp with 260lb tq. That's not bad 280hp but I'd like to see 300hp out of a v6. Infinity, Nissan has done it with their SUV's

What I don't like about the new model it doesn't look refined as in there are little touches here and there that can be fixed in order to make it appear more legit ...

it's going to be like the WK release where the 05 and 06 had the ugly moldings and 07 up had the nice ones etc etc and all the kinks and issues will be worked out by the time '12 and '13 roll around

the interior is a much better upgrade than the current WK interior

I've always loved American cars with their design. The WK2 IMO, has lost a lot of it's originality. What I dislike the most is the rear part of it....and plastic fenders

Scottina06

I think you can trace the look of the WK2 right back to the Cherokee. IMO...it hasnt veered one bit from its design evolution. Vehicles evolve and improve over generations. If the Grand still looked like the WK with a different interior....everyone would hate it...Right? Or wonder why they even bothered. Or if it still looked like the 94 Grand Cherokee with no design evolution at all. Most WJer's hated the WK....till they actually saw it in person and drove it. I personally hated the WJ...but I never drove one or even looked at one up close. Its an evolution people...this Grand is.....dare I say it......1000x or more better than the WK.

Matt
01-22-2010, 10:52 AM
I don't think anyone is arguing the need for evolution, I just think most of the people who have complained, just hate the similarities to seemingly inferior vehicles - namely the rear end, tailamps. I like the new WK2, but I'm with the others, I wish the tailamps didn't look so simliar to other SUV's. If they were more unique/authentic looking, that's be better IMO.

to my knowledge....the lamps on the rear hatch are govt mandated on SUV's. The lamps to the side of those are prettyy darn similar to the WK rear lamps...maybe a little smaller....which was a complaint of WK haterz.(the rear lamps were too big)

Is it a new regulation... 'cause our current WK's don't have any lighting on the hatch (aside from the 3rd brake light at the top).

Either way, it still looks strikingly similar to more than a few SUV's out there.

Not a big deal to me though, it wouldn't deter me from buying one.

Motteler621

Oh I see. That kind of sucks for those companies who have already had prototypes drawn up.

I agree that they have to stick within their guidlines, but these engineers and designers are paid to create renderings that are unique (or at least we would hope so), so that's the only issue, why would they make them look so similar to other SUV's.

Again, I don't think they are all that bad, and it wouldn't deter me from purchasing one, I'm more or less providing the other point of view.

Yea, im not sure maybe they were just being safe and thought it looked good with the design. I know when I worked on projects for companies in school during out design phase we would have to follow strict guidlines. So much input was needed from people higher up, like govt, etc. that we couldnt just go and do what we liked.

Oh I see. That kind of sucks for those companies who have already had prototypes drawn up.

I am actually a big fan of the new WK2. I like the attention they put into my dislikes on my current WK. (road noise and interior design being my big two) Im interested to feel if there is a big difference from the 3.7 to the 3.6. Even though when I purchase my next jeep it will have the HEMI.

I do have dislikes as well but I think it will just take some getting used to. Im sure i will like it even more when I park next to one and actually see the differences in person compared to the WK

I would like to see LED taillights on the WK2. That's about the only change I can suggest right now without having seen the actual vehicle.

Most every conceivable change I was hoping for (larger back seat and cargo area, better interior materials, slightly larger, different front end/headlights/grill) was addressed.

Yeah well said mate, they seem to have addressed most of my complaints too.
I love how they've retained the towing capacity, it lets them compete directly in the heavy towing market with VW and Land Rover.
I'm not sold 100% on the looks, but neither was I sold on my current WK either, but I knew I could drastically improve it with a few subtle mods.
I purchased my current one for the value/horsepower/elec diff locks, thankfully not the interior!

My major beef with the WK2? Without doubt it will be the gearbox, it's well past it's used by date. What this vehicle deserves is the creme of the crop 6 speed ZF auto featured in anything from Ford Falcons through to XKR Jags. If Ford could afford and justify putting it in their (Australian) Falcon, Jeep could easily justify the extra small expense for a truly world class gearbox.

You have to compare the curb weight, not the GVWR, as the payload capacity has been greatly increased on the WK2.

Examples:

WK Laredo 4WD V6: 4,505 Lbs curb weight (payload 1,100) = 5,600 GVWR

WK2 Laredo 4WD V6: 4,660 Lbs curb weight (payload 1,840) = 6,500 GVWR

WK Limited 4WD V8 Hemi: 4,719 Lbs curb weight (payload 1,050) = 6,150 GVWR
