Hello everyone

I need a new headunit. My Alpine IVA-D900 is way outdated (have an Alpine iPod adapter and I can only play playlists or songs in a list and I can't freely change songs not to mention it isn't a touchscreen) and I want a touchscreen which can connect to iPod as well as play DVD, CD, eventually connect to Sat radio, be a good unit for subs/ door speakers (not sure about this particular one yet since I'm not sure how much I want to put into the truck), etc. I'm considering the

Pioneer AVH-P5100: http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_17909_Pioneer+AVH-P5100DVD.html

or the

Pioneer AVH-P7800DVD: http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_7404_Pioneer+AVH-P7800DVD.html

Can anyone help me out with this issue?

Also, I want to buy a stull industries grill but for some reason their site doesn't allow me to order. Where can I get one? Also I plan on painting this black as well if I can get it. Is that possible without any chipping or anything like that? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

The biggest difference between the two you have listed there is the screen resolution. The 7800 has a much better GUI. Plus, it has a little better audio/tuning control.

Thanks Matt for your response. But one thing will I be able to control the iPod or scan through songs through the screen? Because right now my Alpine D900 can only play playlists (which has to be preset before you hook it to the car).

Yes. I'm not well versed in video/nav systems, but I do know you have the same amount of control as you would using your iPod (unlimited control). The iPod interface technology has come along way since the D900. They'll all do what your are looking to do. I noticed that both of your choices are without nav... just wanted to make sure you were aware of that.

Also, you can probably get 300 or so bucks for your D900 on eBay.

With both units you can see the ipod playlists on the head unit with optional adapters. On the listings scroll down for the ipod details and it says what they both can do.

This is the adapter for the cheaper head unit. You can read what it lets you do with it.

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_17862_Pioneer+CD-IU205V.html

And this is whats needed for the other model for the ipod.

iPod Ready: Pioneer CD-IB100II (http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_6907_Pioneer+CD-IB100II.html) required and sold separately

The Apple iPhone 3G, iPod Nano 4th Gen, iPod Touch 2nd Gen, and any other newly released iPods can be controlled using the iPod adapter above; however, charging will not be possible unless you purchase the Scosche IFWA PassPORT charging adapter (http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_16295_Scosche+PassPORT+IFWA.html).

Oh, and I actually got some gear thru this site, decent prices and I would recommend buying from them.

Chuck, avoid the CD-IB100II at all costs, lol. It's a pain in the ass to install and it requires a separate power and ground.

From those two you list I would go with the cheaper model. The other one has more features for the money like 5.1 surround but I dont think you will be using that. I think the first one has what you want, plays the ipod and charges it from the head unit.

There ya go, im not familiar with that adapter but if its not just a simple cord and needs its own power and ground i'd go with the simple unit. The first unit has 2 AV outs for front and rear sub so you can hook up amps in the future if you wanted. Just wont have front to rear speaker fading with only a front av out. Not really needed anyways unless you plan on going all out.

Really it needs a separate power and ground? I thought it takes power from the main unit similar to my Alpine adapter. In regards to the 5100, is it an overall improvement in all aspect compared to the D900 (sound, looks, everything)? Also, how is Sirius satellite? I've been interested in getting it but is it worth it? Can the 500 play iPod videos? Also how can I bypass the vehicle in motion block?

Yes, it has a separate power and ground. See below...

As far as comparing the unit to your D900... it looks as if the screen resolution will be a downgrade (D900>5100), sound will be the same, feature set will likely be very similar. You're upgrading to the touchscreen, but getting a new unit this day in age it would be a requirement of mine to get something with a high pixel rate.

So would the 5100 suffice for my needs as well as playing ipod videos? I mean as long as the words and images are legible I'm fine.

For a purchase this big I would find a retailer around you that has the product on display. That way you can check out the features, interface/resolution and see if it's what you want. Just my $.02.

Thanks a lot for the help Matt. It looks like they are practically the same interface. So I may go with the cheaper one. Does anybody know where to get the stull industries grill for an 04 GC? Their site doesn't have a section to order.

Also, anyone with Sirius. Any good or bad things about it?

for the grille painting i suggest automotivetouchup.com or have a pro do it. You need a super hard clear coat like the PPG ceramiclear

I'm hoping if I get this. I'll probably send it out to Daniel and hopefully he'll know how to prep and paint it. Thanks a lot.

Just as a late update grill was done and looks amazing and I finally have the cash for the 5100. I decide not to get Sirius in order to lower costs. Instead I'm just getting the headunit and the iPod connections. But can videos from an iPod be played on this headunit? I'm just curious. I haven't seen this creen on display at any shops around me.

Odd, but all the questions you asked so far I was able to google and find all the info within 2 min. Above I even posted links to the head units features clearly listed. J/S.

You have a Pioneer right? If so go right to the site for all the info you need.

Update: I got the Pioneer AVH-P5100DVD with iPod Cable and a video bypass (which allows movies, DVD etc to play while the vehicle is in motion. Hopefully I'll get some photos/videos soon. This is a great headunit and very happy with my choice. Now I'm eager to get a rear view camera and maybe even the bluetooth module.

I now have an Alpine IVA D-900 for sale haha. :D

lower that biatch!!!!!

Hahaha well right now I'm saving up to see if I really want the rear view camera and bluetooth module. If not those I'm saving for SRT repro gloss black wheels and tires. We need factory repro as a vendor so I can get a discount haha.

After that I might redo my whole exhaust from the resonators to the tip with some custom pipe and flowmaster 50 series delta muffler with a Magnaflow tip.

Then we'll see about lowering

I say screw the back-up cam and bluetooth, and skip the lowering for now and def get the srt reps. I think if you mention this site you get a discount, no? Call them up and ask, they gave me a good discount and free chrome lugs. Then save for srt Eibachs. The look and ride with the reps and eibachs is night and day IMO.

Sell the 900 over on DIYmobileaudio.com... they can control the H701 processor, you will probably get your best price there.
