View Full Version : What is this black box found in my dash?

I came across this black plastic box with a Siemens Label on it, box is around 4"x4"x1". Looks like the soundproofing has been cut above the steering column and this box wedged up in there not secured by anything. Just looks out of place to me, like installed afterwards. Anyone else have this thing? I have an 05 Laredo by the way.

I just looked at mine Timmy...

Mine doesnt have that box that i can see. Its not the security...I have that and it says Mopar security right on the box. Its not the uconnect module either...thats a Johsons controls box and is much larger.

Get the mopar part # off of it and enter the number at moparsupercenter or one of the parts dealers and see what comes up.

Could it be the EDR (event data recorder) I read in my owners manual that my 09 wk has it. If you have an accident or something fails on the truck it records EVERYTHING... (how loud the radio was, what position the seats were in, if your windows or moon roof was open or not. If you were wearing your seat belt, If you were accelerating or braking) No joke but big brother is watching...

Timmy has an 05-06...so its not the black box unless it was added

It def looks added afterwards. It has two harnesses, one on each side. Its just wedged up in there held by the sound proofing. I'll start googleing numbers off it. It says Siemens on it, isnt that like a phone company? I trace the harnesses from it and the plastic clips are not engaged in anything, like the harnesses were moved.

It is the transmission control module.

Siemens makes just about everything electrical from relays to breakers.

Ok, so its supposed to be there then. Just looked thrown in there out of place. I didnt think Jeep would have a major componant just wedged up in there not screwed or fastened down. Unless its been replaced maybe?

^^^^^^ that would be a reason why its not secure, been replaced.

could one dealer see all the vehicle service records, from the past from other dealers ???
if so, if you knew a friendly one, maybe they could look it up. see if it been swapped.
if it matters...

Yes Rob they can, a dealer in the United States told me what has been done to my Jeep by the local dealer here in Australia.

Timmy,
That is your TCM and it will be a EGS52 or 53. There's a plastic tray up above your steering column the it snaps into.
Tom.
