Astronomy Zone: What is it?

The owner's manual (p. 158) says that the Blind Spot Monitoring System in my 2012 Summit will be rendered unavailable if it enters an Astronomy Zone.

What the devil is an Astronomy Zone and how do I know if I'm about to enter one?

Re: Astronomy Zone: What is it?

Am going to make a guess here. Some cities/locations use special street lights to minimize the amount of light leaking into the night sky, especially if there are any astronomy facilities nearby. An example would be the Big Island of Hawaii and the Mauna Kea observatory.

Re: Astronomy Zone: What is it?

Since I think the blind spot monitor uses RF, it is probably talking about areas around radio telescopes to avoid interfering with them.

Re: Astronomy Zone: What is it?

HammFist is correct, around some radio telescopes are radio quiet zones where radio transmission "noise" is restricted to avoid interference. The Green Bank radio telescope in West Virginia is probably the most prominent example in the U.S. What I don't understand is how your Jeep "knows" when it is in an astronomy zone. Any guesses?

Re: Astronomy Zone: What is it?

This document suggests that the GPS system instructs the BSM system to shut down in an Astronomy zone.

The member who replied that it may be due to street lighting requirements could be on to something.

One of the UK's largest radio telescopes is in this area so maybe scientific requirements have to be adhered to.

I still don't know haw it works!

On a lighter note this is one of the highest areas in the UK for UFO sightings but perhaps we can rule our the little green men

Re: Astronomy Zone: What is it?

It's referring to this: United States National Radio Quiet Zone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's a "radio free" zone. They monitor this area constantly, and take it very seriously. They've gone to folks houses that had electrical shorts and the owners didn't know it.
