730N (RER) vs 430N (RHB) vs 730N (RHR)

I don't know about you, but as someone ready to purchase a new Jeep Overland, I am really confused and somewhat upset with the "Media Center Gate" at Jeep! My dealer can't explain it nor can he provide straight answers. I really want to understand every feature (no matter how small) between the first Media Center Jeep installed this summer 730N RER, versus the cheaper current only option of the 430N, versus what is coming in January (or so they say) in the 730 RHR. I know there are some threads here but I still can't discern the subtle differences between these media centers. I heard that you can't connect your phone to the 430N (but not sure). I wrote to Jeep & below is what they emailed back.

Dear Joseph:

It is great to read of your interest in the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Overland model, Joseph!

The original Media Center 730N (RER) was a CD/DVD/MP3/HDD radio with
6.5" touch screen, GPS Navigation, 30GB hard drive, Sirius Satellite
Radio, Sirius Traffic, Album Artwork, Hands Free Phone, Voice Command of
Radio & Navigation and iPod Control.

The Media Center 730N (RHR) has the features of the original (RER) with
the addition of Sirius Travel Link, USB iPod Control w/Voice Command,
Bluetooth Streaming Audio and Hands Free Texting. The Media Center 730N
(RHR) is tentatively scheduled to be available in the 2011 Jeep Grand
Cherokee models in January, 2011.

The Media Center 430N (RHB) is a CD/DVD/MP3/HDD radio with 6.5" touch
screen, 30GB hard drive, Album Artwork and Audio Jack, Garmin Navigation
and Sirius Travel Link. Navigation from Garmin is the name recognized by
drivers everywhere as the dependable, must-have navigation tool. The new
radio features Garmin's intuitive user interface, and brings the Garmin
consumer experience to a factory in-dash radio.

My best suggestion, Joseph, would be for you to contact your preferred
Jeep dealership in order to discuss the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee model
that would best suit your needs. Your preferred Jeep dealership is the
best resource for the most up-to-date factory order information and
availability.

If you have any further product questions about the 2011 Jeep Grand
Cherokee models, you are always welcome to reply back to this email and
I will respond back to you as promptly as I can. If you prefer, you can
also call me directly with your questions at the Jeep Product
Information Center by calling 1-800-964-0600. When you call, I can
connect you directly to your local Jeep dealership, providing your call
is during the dealer's hours of operation.

Thank you for your interest in the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland
model, Joseph. Have a great day!

Sincerely,

Maureen

Btw, to make me even more confused today; my local dealer said he thought Jeep was switching over to an 8" touchscreen using the 830N model used in the Dodge Journey! I am so confused ! Help me please! Thanks!

Re: 730N (RER) vs 430N (RHB) vs 730N (RHR)

I'm looking to purchase a new Overland soon, too. The 730N (RHR) sounds perfect to me, since it has Sirius Traffic and Travel link. I agree with you, it does seem confusing. I'm going to test drive one this weekend, and that is one of my questions.
Hope we can both decide on the right one!

Where in the world would they put the 830N unit? I doubt you have to worry about it switching to the 830N so soon.

Re: 730N (RER) vs 430N (RHB) vs 730N (RHR)

That info on the RHR is the first I've seen of it; I think you've given some breaking news. It's honestly what I suspected- it brings the 730N what few features the 430N RHB has and the 730N RER does not (Travel Link, USB iPod, hands free SMS, Bluetooth streaming audio). The 430N RHB does indeed have phone connection via Bluetooth; the current issues seem to be centered around getting music to play reliably over Bluetooth and also using an iPhone v4 via the iPod control. But a phone that supports Handsfree profiles over Bluetooth should work just fine.

I don't know that the differences between the units qualifies as a "-gate" level scandal, but it sure has been confusing to buyers.

This is not true. The Media Center 830N is on the CURRENT Dodge Journey. It's similar to the 730N, but is non-touch-screen.

Don't expect any move to the new radios until a midlife refresh.

RHR Info has been on the wk2 site for quite awhile now, and additional info was added at the end of last month: http://www.wk2jeeps.com/wk2_navigation.htm

Re: 730N (RER) vs 430N (RHB) vs 730N (RHR)

SIRIUS Travel Link will be available for the RHB via a software upgrade that is coming out in a couple of months.

The new 8.4" screens will debut in, and only be available for the 2011 Dodge Journey, 2011 Charger and 2011 300C. The navigation version is model RB5 and the non-nav version is the RE2. The Grand Cherokee will move to a larger screen radio in the 2013 or 2014 model year.

The new Charger/300 will also offer a new smaller touch screen radio with a 4.3" screen (model REB).

There is a new 735N radio coming out, I believe for export markets, don't have my notes handy.

Re: 730N (RER) vs 430N (RHB) vs 730N (RHR)

Thanks Milous! That is what I was looking for. Is it safe to say the 730N(RHR) will include all the functions listed within the 730N (RER) within the above link plus the few items they mention under the 730(RHR)?

Re: 730N (RER) vs 430N (RHB) vs 730N (RHR)

Is the upgrade from RER to RHR a simple software upgrade? Or is the hardware different as well?

We flat don't know. It appears that there will be some hardware difference (addition of a USB port in the console armrest), but the engineers seemed to indicate some kind of update capability in the RER. As to whether that means some of the features (Sirius Travel Link, Bluetooth streaming audio) can be added via a software update (or if they even will be) has not yet been revealed.

I'm hoping they can be, but I am not holding my breath.

While there may be some future software updates for RER features, there are quite a few changes on the RHR that won't be able to be upgraded/added via software. I'm updating the WK2Jeeps.com site later tonight with an expanded features list for the RHR, I'll post the info here once I have it organized.
