I have read a lot of threads on the differences between the 430 & 730 so I know the differences. What I would love to know...since all the local dealers have is the 430n....is do you like your 430n media system?

I love the voice activated Nav in my current vehicle so part of me wants to order new but am I crazy to wait 60-90 days when i could have a new SUV tomorrow if I could live with the 430n.

Would love to know your thoughts.

Thanks

P.S. New to the forum so this is my first thread.

Just FYI, no one's seen the new 730N (RHR). I'm sure you'll find opinions from people with the old 730 (RER), but if you order you'll be getting the new RHR model, so it's a bit of an unknown. One would hope that the new one will top both the 430 and the old RER.

Its really your call. The nav feature on the 430 is basically identical to a garmin hand held unit. Dont expect any fancy mapping and graphics because it uses the same "cartoonish" looking maps as the cheaper hand held units. This isnt necessarily bad, but some people including myself might want a little more sophisticated looking nav. Regardless of the mapping I have heard the garmin works well and is obviously a proven navigation database.
If you go to wk2jeeps.com it lists the differences between the 3 units. 730 RER is no longer available. Its now 430 (garmin) and the new 730 RHR which isnt in any vehicles yet but supposed to start production in around 2 weeks. So it will be a little while before you get any hands on feedback.

I would be willing to bet if you went and test drove a new Overland with the 430N you would love it. Buy one off the lot so the rest of us can get our orders goin over at the factory ;-)

So far I have no gripes about the 430n. I'm already used to Garmin navigation so I like having it in the dash. Also the Uconnect works great with my Droid and I can stream mp3s off my thumb drive in the center console USB port without any problems.

The cartoon looking graphics on the 430n nav are horrible!!!!! I'm soo glad my vehicle came equipped with the 730 rer just for that alone. At my time of order I was expecting the 430n but got lucky when I took delivery.(I couldn't postpone my order just for the radio and was just gonna settle for the 430) I'm sure the garmin is a great system but for personal preference I just couldn't stand to look at the cartoon looking mapping

I have the 730N RER and have not seen a 430N but I think the 730N is cartoonish compared to my M-B SLK350. I dont think I would like the 430N at all.

I tried to order mine with the 730, but it was right when they took it off the order form, so I went with the 430. I have no problems with it, the voice controls that it has work well. I don't think you will regret it if you get the 430. Maybe if you had the 730 and were going down to the 430 you might miss some of the features. But if you never had the 730 you probably won't realize the features you are missing. IMO

430 is great and will be better once the update comes out. If you park in a garage or drive through long tunnels on a daily basis, I would rcomend waiting for the 730 for the dead reckoning. Otherwise, no point in waiting for an undetermined amount of time.

Another 430N supporter here - I love mine!

430N seems to work quite well... we actually preferred the Garmin nav just because we're familiar with them... we have a Nuvi portable we use in our sports car and WJ, and we were able to transfer our POIs easily to the 430N.

Sort of ironic... when we first talked to the dealer, we were told the 730 was the only nav option on the Overlands, and it was not possible to get the Garmin. In the end, we waited for the Saddle interior, which coincidentally seems to have pushed us into the Garmin window of builds.

These things can make you crazy if you obsess too much about them, IMHO.

Hello! Joe from WI here. I'm WK4ME from the forum. I will be picking up my GC Overland tomorrow and it has the 430N Garmin based GPS. I specifically ordered it this way as I have an updated, but few year old Garmin Nuvi 660 model. I have saved about 100 or so "favorites" which I think you were calling POI's in your post today. My question is, you mentioned you were able to "transfer the POI's" from your Garmin portable to your 430N. Could you please tell me how you did that? My Garmin has the USB port, as well as a "flash drive". When I first heard that Jeep was going to put the Garmin based GPS in the GC, it essentially was the main reason I went to look at them. While talking to the folks at the dealership, I asked about transferring the favorites from my Nuvi to the 430N, and was told it could not be done. Don't know if that's true or not, but you are the first person I've seen mention it.

If you would not mind, could you please take a moment and tell me how you did yours? Thanks, I'll definitely owe you one!

Cheers,

Joe

Few quick questions for those of you with the 430n:

Am I correct in my understanding that you can plug an iPod into the center consol and voice command the music on the device?

If so, does the iPod charge when connected in the center consol?

Does the Garmin NAV have the "quasi" dead reckoning that the hand helds have? For instance when you enter a tunnel, does it keep your speed an heading for about 30 seconds or so?

Anyone know if the upcoming 430n update will fix iPhone 4 issues?

With respect to the first two questions: yes, you can plug it into the center console and you can voice command the music. And yes, it does charge while connected in the center console.

I don't know about the iPhone issue.

With respect to dead reckoning, I have seen two opinions on these forums and the owners manual doesn't address it. However, I do go through a tunnel regularly that takes about 2 minutes to traverse. While in the tunnel, my 430 nav does track and it shows the vehicle in the correct location when I emerge. This is also the case when there is stop and go traffic in the tunnel and my speed is not constant. So it appears to me that there is some dead reckoning ability built into the 430.

I like the graphics in the 430 better than the graphics in the 730. I know others feel differently. You need to look at both for yourself. I also like the Garmin interface a lot more, too.

As for being able to voice command the nav on the 730, I found that to be better in theory than in practice. In my limited experience with the 730, whenever I would voice command a new destination on the 730, I would have an extended conversation with my nav that became tedious after a while. I ended up preferring to enter new destinations manually. Your experience may differ.

However the one thing the old 730 had that the 430 does not is Sirius Traffic, which is displayed real time on the map. I am aware the 430 will be getting Sirius Travel Link soon, but even with that upgrade, the 430 will still not show real-time traffic. The ability to have the nav route you around traffic real-time is the real difference to me and how important that is to you may ultimately impact your decision. Even though I like nearly every other aspect of the 430 better, I would have gotten the 730, because of this single feature, had it been available when I ordered in September.

Other than not having real-time traffic, I love the 430 and consider it better than the 730 in all other ways.

For those of you who think the 430N looks cartoonish, try switching to the night color setting and then bumping the brigtness all the way up. Looks 100x better than the stock "crayola" colors IMO
