3.6L Pentastar Oil Filter - First Change

Others have posted about how easy it is to access and change the oil filter on the Pentastar V6, and how the cartridge filter allows easy inspection, but no photos I have seen. Sooo here is my experience with pics.

My dealer set up first oil change at 8,000 kms (5,000 miles), but I bought a filter on the day I took delivery so I could change the filter sooner. So here are my findings at about 4,700 kms.

The change was a snap. Remove the access port in the engine cover and use a 15/16” socket to remove the filter cap, and the filter cartridge pulls out with the cap. The filter then unsnaps from the cap and a new one snaps in. They provide a new O-ring in the box with the filter. Only very minor drips need to be caught by towels or rags when the cap is removed. Very neat.

The oil was medium brown. Nothing unexpected for nearly 4,700 kms, and smelled normal. I took the old filter cartridge indoors and cut it open for inspection. The pleated cardboard is about a metre long when unfurled. I found many small metal flakes in the filter pleats, on the exterior side where they were caught. So the filter did its job. There were about 200 of these small flakes, ranging from pinpoints of reflected light to (0.3mm x 0.1mm x foil thickness) in size for the largest ones. More than I expected to find, but nothing alarming to me. The filter did its job and I will do another check of the replacement filter to see if any more flakes appear on the second filter, before the dealer does the 8,000km oil change.

Pics below show the findings. Sorry that focus on some metal flakes is not great; only my second stringer camera available today.

What a great location for an oil filter. With a dipstip oil extractor, this could be a stand up DIY oil change engine.

During the assembly process much care is take to ensure contaminates and other debris don"t enter the assembly, but so be it I have assembled more engines then care to share with u guys...and even ones i have asembled in controlled enviroments come up with some particulate matter...so dont be alarmed it not always an indication its from inertnal parts of the engine there may also be some other factors just watch #2 filter as well as # 3 filter change...the key factor here is there in the filter were they should be........pattyboy

When not under warranty I use a change interval starting about 8000 kms (5000 miles), but stretch it out longer if duty has been light. Haven't had an engine wear/oil consumption issue on three engines out to 300,000 kms each, which is more important to me than getting the longest interval possible. Always use reputable recycler for your old oil.

I agree, oil could be good but the safety valve on the filter may be open... So, I will change the filter at a change interval of 3,000 miles or 5000 km.... And oil at +\- 6,000 miles or 10 000 km...

Re: 3.6L Pentastar Oil Filter - First Change

Just a short follow-up.

I made the second oil filter change at 8,300kms (just shy of 5,000 miles) to see what was caught in the cartridge since the first change at 4,700kms documented above.

Oil still looks fine. This time the filter had only 10 tiny metallic flakes caught in it (aluminum I believe due to colour and non-magnetic). So it appears the tiny bits left from machining the V6 block are pretty much all caught now. Filters working as they should.

Full oil change at the dealer in a few days.

Going to do my first filter change today as I just recevied the filters in the mail. No local parts store had any on hand.
Thanks for the pics and directions.

That's because there are no 3rd party manufacturers that have an oil filter for the 3.6 Pentastar. Only Mopar has em

I guess that means nobody should be expecting places like Jiffy Lube to do an oil change on a WK2?
