Re: Help Removing tail lights & bumper reflectors..

check these out first:

EDIT - LINKS FIXED, MY BAD

LED Liftgate Reverse and Tail Light Install w/pics

LED Backup Light Install with Pics

I just removed mine a few days ago, it is a bit of a PITA, but ok if you go slow.

As shown above, first get the rear panel from the hatch off. I started at the lower end of the panel nearest to where the panel is closest to the cargo floor when closed. There are 8-10 plastic plugs that you need to get to first by prying open the panel enough to get a pry tool to the plugs to lever them out without breaking plastic or knuckles. Go slow and take each one out before moving to the next. You can cut your hands on the platic panel so gloves might help. You can also snap the plastic panel if you use too much elbow grease.

Once you get the panel out there are four small nuts mounting the hatch lights to the hatch door.

Then moving to the corner lenses, follow the above links - these are pretty simple by comparison.

I'll post up pictures later, just haven't had time.

Re: Help Removing tail lights & bumper reflectors..

I just went through this...

The "wrap-around" tail sections are easy. Pull the two plastic pins out by hand (I worked them out with a small flathead screwdriver). Then, I put tape around the edge of the lens as to not scratch the paint beneath. I also removed my wedding band.

Then, grab a hold and pull straight back. Be careful because the light cords arent very long. You can see in the picture how the lenses are connected.

I left the liftgate portion of the tails on because they are installed with double-sided sticky foam (yes, thats the technical term). I took out the two hex-head screws on the back side of the liftgate and thought, wow this was easy. I assumed they were installed the same as the wrap-around tails so when I started to tug on the lens I noticed the foam. I quickly re-installed the hex-head screws.

Hope this is helpful, I don't have a lot of time to do a proper write-up.

There are two other hidden bolts and nuts for each lens behind the hatch that hold the hatch lenses on. While there is some stickiness to the foam, not sure if it is actual adhesive or just due to heat and mounting pressure - either way the foam is just a water sealant and comes away from the vehicle no problem. You just gotta get all four nuts off the four posts.

Good to know. I was able to get the tint on without removing them but I plan to change the bulbs so this was valuable. Ya, it may not be adhesive, but I didn't want get into it and deal with it if it was - it was sunny but only 45-deg outside so my window of opportunity was small

Re: Help Removing tail lights & bumper reflectors..

^thanks mhassler. i started the same tint effort with them on using lamin-x, then concluded i was too hamfisted to do the self tint job, which led to needing to remove the lenses to get them spray tinted, which also allows me to do the LED bulb replacement. phew.

first shot is the plastic panel you need to pry off the rear tailgate to get to everything. there are at least 8-10 green and yellow plastic plugs you need to lever out with a forked pry tool if ya got one.

this is the rear liftgate once you get the interior panel removed. easy access from here.

there are 4 of these black posts with small nuts which mount the liftgate lenses to the liftgate. two are located outboard of the interior panel, two are located underneath the panel - so you gotta go in to either get the lenses removed and/or to replace the bulbs on the hatch. Stoopid design here, but I've not said that on this vehicle previously for anything else, so hall pass is given.

shot from rear exterior once lenses are removed, you can see the four corner holes where the posts/nuts are mounted.

Re: Help Removing tail lights & bumper reflectors..

Moose, need additional advice:

How do you ensure that your wife is out of the house and won't do a surprise return right when you've got your vehicle dismantled thusly??

Mani/pedi gift cert?

Cosmo Girl's Night Out with you picking up the tab?

Custom jean fitting at the mall (again, on your dime)?

Golf/tennis lesson? (careful, this can backfire depending on the instructor)

Whassup, how do you do it?

Re: Help Removing tail lights & bumper reflectors..

Moose if you have the lamin-x already, why spray tint? Trying bringing it to a tint shop they should be able to get it on nice. I got mine yesterday but it recommends 70 degree weather (roughly) so I am waiting until its a tad warmer (50-60) as 30's at night is cold for adhesive to adhere properly and no heated garage for me.
