WK2 to get diesel by 2013

For the U.S. market, I might add.

http://www.autoblog.com/2011/04/14/j...america-by-20/

Quote:
Autoblog just heard it straight from the Italian-Canadian horse's mouth: The hot new Jeep Grand Cherokee in North America will – somewhere between soon and the end of 2013 – be getting the same recently improved 3.0-liter V6 turbo-diesel engine that Europe gets. In the Grand Cherokee, this oil-burning powerplant is good for 237 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, the latter of which is fully delivered between 1,800 and 2,800 rpm. This is music to all Jamboree and Rubicon fanatics everywhere.

It has not been decided whether or not there might be a special six-speed manual shifter offered alongside the W5A580 five-speed overdrive automatic transmission, and an eight-speed automatic is in the works, as well. But the manual with the Quadra-Drive II transfer case on a Trail Rated Grand Cherokee would bring the glee Stateside even moreso.

Fiat Auto CEO Sergio Marchionne is fast becoming the new Bob Lutz in his ability to cast aside all carefully kept secrets of the communications team and talk about the good things that are coming. Only minutes after Jeep's international bosses artfully skirted the issue of a common-rail diesel GC here in North America, Marchionne assured us that one would, in fact, be coming. We respect the Jeep leaders. We dig Sergio.

Not only does the latest generation of the 3.0-liter CRD engine with Multijet II management – built by VM Motori in Italy based on specifications from Fiat Powertrain Technologies – get 19-percent greater fuel efficiency than the previous mill, it produces 20-percent less CO2 emissions. Towing capacity is quoted at just over 7,700 pounds, the maximum for any current Grand Cherokee trim.

But will the Wrangler get the European 2.8-liter CRD inline-four good for 197 hp and 302 lb-ft of torque, paired with the NSG370 six-speed manual and Rubicon Rock-Trac transfer case? Because that, folks, is the holy grail item. Even Sergio was mum on this.

We dig Sergio, too, but two and a half years -- "soon" through e.o. 2013 -- is a mighty elastic spread; a woman could have three kids in that time.

Mention of the 5-speed box is interesting, though, as likely that will be phased out in summer, 2012.

Sure, and I have a hundred dollars on the EPA raising the bar before that happens.

Re: WK2 to get diesel by 2013

I hope not, I would take one if I could find it in California but I would have to wait to find a used one over 7500 miles.

Re: WK2 to get diesel by 2013

that would be great but the powers at be are going to make sure diesel is well over $6.00 by then. also keep in mind the dodge 2500 uses the same trans as the 1500 and is prone to failure due to a lack of oil circulation. a diesel's rpm is much much lower than a gasoline engine, so the torque converter does not spin as fast. i would be worried if they use the same trans from the current v-6, or Hemi. i would be shocked if they did, but worth watching.

Re: WK2 to get diesel by 2013

Not sure if anyone read all the comments on the autoblog post...

Quote:
Hey guys -

We sort of anticipated this burst of comments on this long-awaited item.

Regarding the urea deal, yes, this would be necessary in a separate reservoir. A spokesperson - not wishing name revealed - added that they would do everything to keep the full spare tire.

@visconti24 - only the smallest 2.2-liter CRD engine is still provided by Daimler/Mercedes. Both the 2.8 and 3.0 I talk about are by VM Motori here in Italy and were just recently upgraded to - quote, again anonymous - address any issues having to do with the previous generation engine architecture. The CRD motor in the Liberty of yore has little in common with these new diesels.

If I convert EU liters/100km numbers to US mpg numbers, we get: (Wrangler with 2.8 CRD) 28.3 mpg city and 36.2 mpg hwy with manual tranny and 3.21 axle ratio; 25.3 mpg city and 32.7 mpg hwy with 3.73 axle ratio - Unlimited body gets only marginally less. On GrCher 4x4 with 3.0 CRD and current 5spd auto: 22.8 mpg city and 32.7 mpg hwy.

I agree - bring me that Wrangler full-bore Rubicon-basher and the manual.

Re: WK2 to get diesel by 2013

Nice except for the hassle and cost of replacing the "pee jar" every 10k miles. I believe it's VW that has diesel which meets EPA requirements without using a urea mix.

I believe all the clean diesels use the urea mix including the new Touareg TDI.
I would love to have a clean diesel GC here in Canada. Diesel fuel is usually cheaper than regular gas here and the exhaust is cleaner than the gas engines.
