Rack and Carrier or Cargo Hitch

Im about to go on a family trip and thought that it might get tight with luggage so i am looking at a rack and carrier but together im in the 500-600 dollar range. My concern is noise and gas millage hit from the aerodynamics. Alternative is a cargo tray via the trailer hitch. Ugly as hell and disables the back up sensors and camera but less than 100 bucks at harbor freight.

Any thoughts on pure usefulness?

I have the hitch mount one and it's awesome. But I camp fish and hunt a lot so it's really nice to be able to have a safe place to lug back coolers or hogs or deer and dirty clothes. It's also good to cook on when your tailgating. But get the one with the 500lbs limit and folds up. It makes life easier.

No problem, that thing is awesome. I don't have a pic of it but I have even carried a few pallets of sod with it.

Re: Rack and Carrier or Cargo Hitch

I've used the roof one. i like it and didn''t notice a real difference in mpg. That said it's nice to have side steps when using it and it sucks in parking decks. Flipside is the hitch ones make parallel parking and getting in the tailgate a nightmare. Think about the downsides when considering both.
