hello
just changed the oil in my '06 grand cherokee 3.7 v-6 w/ 89000 miles. drained the oil, changed the filter, the oil was just dirty, exactly what you would expect. opened the oil fill to refill w/ oil, found a lot of a tan type of sludge on the cap as well as in the oil fill housing. did a little more looking, found the pcv valve stuck, replaced the valve, seems to be better.
I have always had a little tan film on the cap when I changed the oil since day one, however this time there was a lot, enough that I needed to scrape it off the cap and wipe it out of the fill. the coolant level in the recovery tank is fine, not low.
Is this just a case in which the pcv valve was not able to remove the moisture from the crankcase and it built up in the highest point in the system? as I said, the oil I drained was normal, not milky at all. Also, is this a common problem w/ these models? Have not found this problem here in the forums.
Also, found that the oil fill cap is really hard to open when changing the oil, found that the o-ring on the cap gets dry, thus making it hard to open and close. I took a little grease and lubed the o-ring and now it opens and closes easily

I had the same tan goop on mine right before I had to replace my head gasket. From my understanding, head gaskets are a common problem on these. I was explained that the tan goup was water in the oil due to the faulty gasket.

That's just my experience and I don't know if that is what's going on.

It's condensation mixed into your oil. I'm guessing you live in a climate where the temps go below freezing. Moisture collects and that particular area does not get hot enough to evaporate water. Perfectly normal I've scooped out maybe an ounce worth of goop before.

You should not notice it as much during the summer months.

I do live here in Mass, and we have had our share of cold weather. I figured it was condensation in the crankcase and with the fill tube being on the outside of the motor, the temp never gets hot enough and the condensation rises into the cold fill tube and turns to water. Like I said, I have always had a film on the cap when i changed the oil, but now that i think about it, I have always changed the oil when it has been warm out. So have never seen this much condensation. And like I said, the oil was not milky, indicating a head gasket.
Thanks for the link also, exactly the problem! Also what is a catch can? Is it something I should have?

No problem. I think the HEMI guys like to install catch cans to keep that crap from circulating back into the intake system. As far as I know the 3.7 design doesn't have the same issue, or it just is not as pronounced.
