Side Exhaust + Shorty Headers Project

Hey guys, I put a lot of this same info in the dyno thread but i figure more people would benefit from the headers information if i started a new thread.

For those that don't know i picked up some brand new Edlebrock 65993 shorty headers for a Charger/300C off of craigslist for $180. They list for $450-$550 so i figure if this doesnt work out i can always sell them to a Charger guy. Last night i pulled off the SRT8 exhaust i had and eventually got the drivers side exhaust manifold off which in itself was quite a task. I lined up the manifold gasket and no surprise it all lined up. I tried squeezing it into position but am hung up by about 1/4" of clear by the starter motor bracket. I was worn out after 5 hours of working on it, so i'll hit it again tonight and keep you guys updated. I know long tubes are better but for the $$ i think this may be the way to go for many fellow 5.7L WK'ers.

I purchased a set of pypes high flow cats and M-80 mufflers. The plan is to keep everything as even as possible. I intend to keep the passenger side cat pretty much in the stock spot, and then do the drivers side near the front drive shaft. I was worried about the fuel lines and harnesses, but apparently its not that big of a deal as i have seen photos of an SRT with a long tube setup with the collector pipes run in this exact same spot. Just to be safe though, i got some heat shielding from Jegs. From there i will have an S shaped pipe bend outwards just in front of the mid crossmember and to the M-80 mufflers. For now i plan to just do turn downs until the metal shop finishes my side skirts.

Re: Side Exhaust + Shorty Headers Project

i have a question:

if shorty's are the only choice, why not Jeep SRT8 factory shortys. most likely will clear everything so less modding the parts. readily available as quite a few jeep srt8 guys run headers. just asking bro.

I didnt know shorties existed for the SRT8 Jeep, but yea that would have been preferable. But again at $180 i couldnt pass this up

Man looking at my SRT8 system, the weight benefit of this alone should be nice !

Good luck Ken and $180 is a steal for those shorty headers lets hope they clear ... can't wait to see this project in person

Do you mean stock SRT8 exhaust manifolds/headers? They probably would have worked but i have no idea what they even look like. Plus the whole "D" shaped port vs the square shaped, gaskets, etc... Has anyone done that before? Seems like a good solution assuming they arent all flat and wimpy like the stock 5.7L's

Below is a pic of an SRT with long tubes. You can see where the drivers side pipes go under the driveshaft right next to the fuel lines, that's where i want to put one of the cats. Im wondering if I should run a pipe across just ahead of the cats to connect the two sides to equal the pressure? Kinda like an H-pipe? I'd rather not unless there'll be a significant performance advantage.

Re: Side Exhaust + Shorty Headers Project

Awesome to finally see someone use some shorties, if it all works out I am for sure doing this. You did this all while it was jacked up? didnt have to take of the heads or anything?

the 6.1 srt stock exhaust manifolds, as mentioned are D shape. Yes other have put them on, and used the 5.7 gaskets and it worked okay

I would be afraid of leaks, so i plan on going the 5.7 shorty route

do you think this would be difficult to do while using the factory mids, and not changing the exhaust at all? Or would I have to get some mids fabbed up?

Re: Side Exhaust + Shorty Headers Project

Right now i just have one side jacked up with the wheel removed. Pulling the head would probably be easier but i've never pulled heads before so didnt want to get into that. Racing Solutions is putting together a quote for a much more aggressive cam for me and said just to be safe they usually pull the heads during a cam swap, so if i cant get at this from below i may just use the stock manifolds until they pull the heads and do it then. The main reason i want to improve the exhaust is to make sure when i get the better cam i can really hear that lope. I want it to sounds like my CTS-V did. See the end of this video at around 1:08, i want an idle to sound like that or even choppier.

I think you would really need new mid pipes. Just look at the pics above with the diameter of where the mids connect to each, the header is much bigger and the 2 bolts on that flange do not line up with the 2 bolt flange on the stock mid pipes. Good news is, at least with the route im going, is that they are only going to be about 18" long and require 1 bend. I bought some Hedman collectors/reducers which will just be welded to the new mid pipes. Unfortunately they only came with a 3 bolt flange so ill need to find a 2 bolt one locally

Re: Side Exhaust + Shorty Headers Project

PROJECT FAILED! boooo I finally got the drivers side past the starter after removing the steering shaft, got one bolt in it, then found it was touching the steering shaft and frame rail. So i thought about it for a bit and figured no pain no gain! I could have the drivers side modified to fit and i was going ahead with trying the passenger side. I get the stock manifold out, remove both transmission cooler lines, fluid all in my face and then get the passenger side close enough to find it too is touching the frame rail by about 1/4".

So i begin the task of reinstalling the stock parts. I got the passenger side in and half of the drivers side in. Plan now is to cut my SRT8 exhaust in half where my cutout was and move forward with the new cats and mufflers still, using the stock mid pipes for now. Then i guess when the time comes for the cam swap ill have them install a set of long tube main pipes to my new setup.

I'll still keep everyone posted on the equal length side exhaust and new cats, but the hope of a cheap set of headers is gone for the moment.
