HOW TO: Change out PRND Bezel/Gear Shift

Well since I had to change this out, I figured id post up how I did it in case someone needs to do it in the future.

Time:
30 Minutes

Tools Used:
Trim Stick
Torx bit 20
Microfiber

This was just my process and it worked great for me. Im not sure if there is an easier or better way of doing it. I dont want to be responsible for anything, this is just to help.
Steps:

1) CAREFULLY remove the chrome trim around the bezel. I used the trim stick to get under it. Gently lift up with your fingers after that to get it all the way out.

2) I then removed the shift knob. Make sure you have the Emergency Break engaged fully. Shift into Neutral. Pull down/rotate the chrome ring at the bottom, it should come down easily. Then with a little force jiggle the shifter knob and pull up at the same time. It should come off.

3)Remove the next trim piece that is surrounding the Bezel. be careful to not break any of the tabs .

4) Remove the torx screws with the screwdriver. There should be two that are visible. The other two are under the rubber flap in the "cargo" area on the right side of the shifter.

The other screw is at the top of the bezel. (closer to the radio).

Here are the other two after you remove the cover.

5) Unplug the wiring harness that plugs into the back of the bezel.

6) Remove the bezel.
7) Replace with new part. Make sure that everything lines up and all plugs are back in place securely.

8) Replace screws, trim, chrome and shift knob.

Do a full test drive and also do a full cycle of the gears to make sure it is working properly. The last test is to check the lock in the shifter that doesnt allow somebody to put the car in RND when the key is turned off. Put the truck in Park. turn the key to off and then make sure you cannot move it out of Park.

Hope that helps guys. Im not sure how many ppl will need this or even find this useful. I know the dealership wanted to charge me 1.5 hours labor to do it. Out the door they wanted $1200, i was able to get the part from Justforjeeps for less than half of that overnighted.

I did try. I had cleaned everything like the guys did in the link you sent me. The jeep ran great and shifted perfectly.... for a day. The very next day I got rings around PRND and the jeep wouldnt move. I finally got it home and i had the dealership do a diagnostic on it and the same exact problem occurred. The part was faulty.

I wish it would have worked but it didnt. Just my luck though. If i didnt have bad luck i wouldnt have any at all

my truck was shifting like shit and really sluggishly. I thought it was tranny fluid being low. Turns out, after being diagnosed by two different dealerships, that the tranny is fine. It was the Electronic Control Module in the shifter that was bad. After installing it and driving it, i have had none of the same problems as before. It really seemed to fix it

I get those some phucking rings around the PRND ... what did the dealer tell you ???

Mine feels like it doesn't catch the gear and when I completely stop and step on the gas again it goes away, it feels like a minor glitch and only does it when the car is cold

---- you just answered my question LOL

hey do you also get the "tranmission over temp" for a split second when starting the car ???

try searching the quotes in google -- it's nothing but Jeep LOL

You just listed EVERY symptom that I was experiencing. Including the Transmission over temp display for a split second. I have had no problems since ive installed this part.

My dad contacted the dealership to get a price on the part and they told them the always stock them as this is something that seems to fail quite frequently on our trucks. They had 15 on hand.

Re: HOW TO: Change out PRND Bezel/Gear Shift

do you have that part number by any chance ??? so I can go and get it ...

also there is this one symptom that is annoying ...

When I am accelerating and let go of the gas the car seems to jerk opposite direction of the drive shaft moment, as if the whole gears just disengaged but it's strong enough that jerks the whole car and when I step on the gas pedal again it jerks with the moment of the drive shaft ... any takes ???

thanks

MOPAR and their notorious transmissions !!!

Honestly I had the same exact problems that you are having. I woke up this morning and drove it cold and tried to make it do what it has been doing for months... nothing. It stays in the correct gear, no tranny over heat codes, no rough shifts... its like night and day.

The part number is 68004143AF... I got mine through justforjeeps.com. I used the 5% JG discount and got it for almost $400 less than the dealership wanted just for the part.

Re: HOW TO: Change out PRND Bezel/Gear Shift

thanks Randall much appreciated looks like I might have to replace the same thing in mine hopefully it'll help but that price is a kick in the nuts LOL

+rep for you for not making me go through a ton of diagnostics until I figured out WTF was the problem with mine.
