How To : Install A JET 180 TStat

Here is what I did and how I did it...You can obviously do it however you want as this is only how I did it and should be only used as a guide!

Parts Used:

JET 180 TStat #10183
Zip Lock Freezer Bag
Big Black Garbage Bag

Tools Used:

ScrewDriver
Ratchet and Socket

Ok, Lets get started...

First locate where the tstat will go...In the 5.7 its directly under the TB on the left!

Close up!

I pulled off my air intake so I would have easy access to the 2 bolts!

Close up!

I placed a big black garbage bag behind it, just in case it started gushing out everywhere!

The I took a Zip Lock Freezer Bag and held it under as I removed the bolts!

Quite a bit came out when I unbolted it and pulled away the hose and then when I popped the stock tstat out some more came out as well! I just let it all go into the bag although some did miss and get on the driveway!

I then put in the 180 tsat!

Attached the hose back!

Made sure it was all tight!

And finally put my intake back on!

That was it...Piece of cake!

Total time was 15min or so!

Like always this is just how I did it...I take no responsibility for you!

Basically it allows the engine to run at a cooler temp (180)!

Re: How To : Install A JET 180 TStat

Nice writeup and it is something that I'll be doing to my WK tommorow as the tstat stuck open today on a 300 mile round trip.

There are both advantages and disadvantages to to running a tstat that is 15deg lower than oem. Advantages might include an increase in power and maybe a little better mileage. The possible disadvantages include increased engine condensation and sludge formation, screwing up emission controls and possibly fouling O2 sensors and cats. It is a trade off going to the 180 tstat and something that probably shouldn't be done unless you are willing to accept the possible downsides. Personally, I plan on replacing mine with a 195 tstat as that's the temp the engine was designed to run at and I plan on keeping it for a long, long time.
