Looking to swap out existing engine in a 2002 Grand Cherokee Overland (misfire #6, wet plug, leaking freeze plug vs other leak) for another 4.7HO from another 2002 Grand Cherokee Overland that was wrecked at about 100K.

My mechanic sez that Jeep dealership claims that a "special tool" is required to pull the engine. Is this the case? If so, what are my options? Can one be rented, jury rigged or purchased used from somewhere?

Something about the engine needing to be maneuvered in the engine compartment when being pulled out.

To close out this thread, Engine Lifting Fixture Special Tool 8347 is very helpful but not required when pulling the 4.7 engine. Use of this tool avoids bending the lifting bolts (which happens if you use a chain) and helps stabilize and manage the position of the engine when pulling it out of the hole. It was also very helpful to pull the radiator and front end trim parts, and to pull the intake manifold, prior to lifting the engine out.

Sorry for not seeing this sooner. glad you got it worked out. Thats how I pull the motor too, hell the last head gasket job I did it had they hydraulic fan which only comes out attached to the radiator (basically) and it was big enough and in my way enough that it was just easier to strip the front end of the car, pull the radiator and fan and have amazing access to the front of the engine. Especially all considered it takes 1/2 a qt of p/s fluid extra and once you have done it one time it adds all of about 20 minutes round trip and saves tripple that.

I didn't use the "special" tool when i pulled my 4.7... removed everything like posted above..

Miller 8347, that's one pricey tool, $282!

I didn't use any "special" tools. I was the only "special" tool needed lol
