How to Plasti Dip your wheels

I finally got around to using the Plasti Dip this past weekend for the wheels on my WJ and was quite pleased. As promised, here are some pics of the results. Excuse my 2.0 MP camera phone.....

First, for those that dont know what Plasti Dip is, look here: http://www.plastidip.com/

Plasti Dip can be purchased at Home Hardware for us Canucks and at ACE Hardware for all you south of the border.

Why Plasti Dip instead of paint?
1. 100% reversible - if I don't like it, I wait for it to dry and I can peel it off
2. Reduced prep time - as long as the surface is clean and dry you're good
3. No sanding or priming required - Absolutely none. All though I did sand some areas on the lips that were corroded so it would not show through after the Plasti Dip Dried.
4. Quick drying and easy clean up - 4hrs dries rock hard and clean up is easy.

How to prep your wheels for painting:
Really, no prep work involved besides washing and drying. Sand down an imperfections you dont want to see when dried, make sure all the dust from sanding has been removed if required. Whether painting the wheels on your Jeep or off your Jeep you can you use these handy tips by a fellow member which I found useful. I like the card trick, easier than tape BUT if you tape off the tires, you can fasten paper to the tape which will eliminate all chances of over spray. Thanks WSP How To; Paint your wheels w/ out removing them

Painting:
Using plasti dip is just like using spray paint, take all the same precautions and use in a well ventilated area. There are various application types for plasti dip, I chose the aerosol cans.

The Test Mule: I decided to try it out on my spare wheel before tackling the daily drivers. After painting and drying, I decided to scratch off the lip part of the wheel to see what that might look like.

I decided to paint all 4 wheels at the same time off the Jeep and I decided to go full black with no lip, here are the results, before:

After

And here's a pic before I dropped the Jeep back down, just wanted to see what it might look like with a lift, lol:

These pics have taught me a few things, one, it's about time for some nice new brakes all around and a caliper paint and sand for sure, gotta get on that rear tail light tint, I need a bug deflector and those head lights, I gotta do something with those. Overall, pretty happy with the results. What you see is two coats of Plasti Dip, no more no less.

Badges, wiper arms and the front bottom grille opening are all gonna get the plasti dip treatment. I think the upper grille will too along with the side mirrors and maybe the roof rails. But these are projects for another day, perhaps not even this year pending the weather.
