The tale of a Flyin' Ryan Ported TB

Alas, It is my turn to write up a review.

At the beginning I knew I was going to have to wait since I was at the end of a long line. I was ok with that since I'm stupid busy working at the datacenter.

D-Day... plus 4 days lol.. I have to drive out to my parents to work on my jeep since all my tools are there, as I live in an apartment. I get my throttle body swapped out and start up and I go for a drive...things I notice off the bat. Throttle response is much better...much better! EVIC bumped up 1-2 mpg's. and I could feel alittle better low end power. I pull in from my little drive and let it sit... To my saddness my idle was high... really high, around 1100rpms high on a hot engine.

Talking with ryan we done a few things to see if we can get it down. No anvil on anything. Ryan with the awesome customer support that he only knows of, let me send my TB to his machinist to bore out my TB. As you know this is his current project in testing... so I was excited to be part of a I guess a beta project lol.

In short we are testing what its like to go from a previously ported TB to a bored out TB.

The results? On 87 Advanced tune with tranny application under superchips setups.

Well the ported like mentioned above gave some notice ... but this modified job is pretty sweet. Idle is at 800 per superchips, so win on idle. Throttle response is very nice and peppy. Low end grunt is much much better. Oh and the sound... the sound with my AFE stage 2 is reallllllllly freaking awesome. I can't wait to get my exhaust done to really complete this out.

Below are stock and modified ported TB's.

Re: The tale of a Flyin' Ryan Ported TB

Do you know the CFM air flow of the stock TB vs. the ported and bored TB's? How much increase in air flow?

Re: The tale of a Flyin' Ryan Ported TB

Actually Ryan will need to chime in on that one. He got it all setup for me I just had to send out my TB to his machinist. Im going so say its around 70-72mm. If you look close on the back pics you can see how much material was bored out.

Re: The tale of a Flyin' Ryan Ported TB

Hey everybody...

Andrew's TB was , as mentioned in the review, an already-ported TB that I had upgraded for him . Part of the reason for said upgrade was that I took off a little too much material close to the blade, hence the high idle. Honest mistake on my part.

The true bored TBs will look slightly different- the inlet will be tapered so that there is a smooth transition between the bore itself and the portwork.... Because it was bored after the fact there was no taper.

There are also some other small touches....milled TB shaft, new hardware, obviously new blade, etc etc....

This is a 70mm blade model. Most of the bored 4.7 TBs I will be selling will be 70. 71 is possible but it is pushing it. The bellmouth comes out to be 71x80 or so.

I'm glad you like it Andrew, it sounds like you are very pleased all around. Switch to the 91 tune, fill with 93, and it will really shine.

Re: The tale of a Flyin' Ryan Ported TB

Thanks for the input dude.. I knew I forgot to put in some details (milled shaft..etc.)

I am totally happy with the work and the attentiveness that you gave me to make sure that I got what I wanted.

Yeah 91 tune and 93 fill up is def in my future. Along with a magnaflow catback system - pending about a 3 weeks for that installation... looking up for a nice shop to weld it in for me. Really want to go to the drag strip down by Pacific Junction,IA Mid America Motorplex http://www.midamericamotorplex.com/2006/default.asp

Hey, Sleepy, what are the CFM ratings of the stock and your ported TB for a 5.7 engine?

Ah man i can't believe i forgot this one... Got at least 1-2 more MPG with this according to EVIC. Do more evaluations with different tunes as time progresses.

You should notice a bigger difference with the increased spark advance that the 91 tune will offer. The more agressive spark map makes better use of the bigger inlet.
