Excellent: Addco Rear Sway Bar for WJ's

Hello everyone, I just want to share my experiences about the Addco rear sway bar.

Product:

Addco Rear Sway Bar w/ Energy Suspension Greasable Bushings

Why I decided to buy it:

First off, I have always looked into buying this bar but just never jumped at the opportunity mainly because I was lazy and I didn't hear much about despite it being a popular mod among WJ's. That was until I saw this very bar slightly used (less than 500 miles) for a steal (I'm talking 1/3 of the price or less) and it was local (less than a few miles away). So I decided to jump at the opportunity.

Whats needed for install:

-A lift/floor jack (this isn't really needed honestly but this will certainly help with space and install but you can simply have your rig parked on a flat surface and swap out from there). WJ Jeeps does not recommend it but I did it anyway.

-Some WD40 or metal lubricant to loosen up the bolt area assuming you haven't removed these bolts before.

- A ratchet, but an impact wrench? (I don't know why the name is slipping my mind) would be a much more suitable tool given the bolts are really on there. And I'm sorry but I forgot which socket size you need, its not an unknown size though .

-(This particular item is suggested by wjjeeps.com especially if you have the older bar in order to avoid the Fuel Tank Skid Plate Clunk and to limit Sway bar movement) Two metal washers measuring 1 1/4 w/ a 3/4 inlet. I couldn't find 1 1/4 but I decided to use a 1 3/4 washer w/ a 3/4 inlet instead. For those with older bars, and who have placed washers but still have clunking, add another set of washer. I have been told they help.

- (This particular item is suggested as well) Energy Suspension 1" greasable bushing set (Energy # 9.5161G). I was fortunate enough to have these included in my purchase but these will be much better than what Addco supplied due to the fact that they are greasable which will lessen any sort of noise (squeal compared to the Addco bushings).

Install:

The install is very straight forward and I honestly mean that. I thought about making a writeup but its really not that hard. Its literally the removal of 6 bolts (all visible (2) from each bushing (2 bushings) and 1 from each end link (2 bolts all together). From there simply remove the old bar and bushings. I used my stock nuts and bolts since I did not have any from the sale so these will do just fine. Place new bar w/ bushing and install and your set

Review:

This bar is one of the best mods I have done (the best suspension mod to do for the WJ). I definitely feel a great difference in turns and just regular driving. No problems or issues at all. Body roll and understeer is greatly reduced. The rear stiffened up nicely. The bar that I have received was black powdercoated and looked great, there was a light scratch from the previous owner but it didn't matter to me. To be honest, this bar should have been on the Jeep from factory. The stock bar is like a spaghetti strand while the Addco looks like a rope. The factory bar is very thin and hollow and weighs a feather, the Addco is solid tubing and has some weight to it. Heres some number specs for you:

Stock Bar: 9/16" (Garbage)
Addco Bar: 1"

According to WJ Jeeps, there is 700% improvement .

Anyway to sum up my long winded review, this is a must have for any WJ owner.

I'm actually done with modding for that very reason (not by choice)

At that time I had some money, and when I saw this on sale and for that price, I snatched it fast.

Re: Excellent: Addco Rear Sway Bar for WJ's

I see I can get the 1" addco rear bar from jegs for about $150 and the greaseable bushings for under $20. Just might have to give this some serious thought. I've alway considered my 04' WJ to have a decent ride but since adding the SRT8 rear bar to my 07 WK it seems to be a little lacking by comparison. This sounds like a good solution.

Just need to figure out where I am going to get the money for the WJ addco in addition to some springs and bilstiens for the WK.

Summit racing had the bar itself cheaper:

I'd definitely go for it if you can. Its a nice upgrade.

Addco bars make such a difference, it's amazing. My lifted WJ with Addcos (front and rear) handled better than my stock WK lol

Amazon sells it for cheaper--plus free shipping. I love buying parts from them--and not just because I work there.

Re: Excellent: Addco Rear Sway Bar for WJ's

Chuck;
Thanks for your post is very informative. I'm replying to your post, but it's in response to the thread. I have a WJ with a rear clunk - it sounds like a loose spare tire when the rear goes over a bump.

I've worked as a consultant on SUV handling so I want to clarify some terminology important to the WJ. First, it's important to note that the WJ has a solid front axle. This means roll and steer are inseparable. When you steer, the vehicle rolls. And, when the vehicle rolls, it steers. This phenomenon is known as "roll steer."

Oversteer is the caused when the rear of the vehicle has less cornering capacity than the front. So, in a limit maneuver (0.8+ g) on dry pavement, the rear will start to come around, and the vehicle steers too much. Understeer is the the opposite condition and almost all street vehicles are set up with some degree of understeer because they are more predictable to drive.

Now a word of caution: you should not drive a SUV anywhere the limit unless you want to roll. SUVs are high for ground clearance so they have a high center of mass making them much more susceptible to roll over.

Adding stiffer bars will reduce body roll (degrees roll/lateral g) but changes should be coordinated. That is, when you put a stiffer in the rear you must (unless you're a development engineer) also put a stiffer bar in the front. Aftermarket suppliers often make recommendations. Otherwise you can create a dangerous situation.

SUVs are compromise vehicles and the WJ is no exception. They are designed for onroad manners (lower, wider, stiffer is better) and offroad capabilities (higher, narrow, softer is better). Ultimate offroad vehicles don' use sta bars for maximum articulation. The more roll stiffness you add (thicker bar) the less offroad capability.

Having said that, I don't take my current WJ on major offroad because I did $4,000 damage to my first WJ driving very carefully on a Jeep Jamboree. It just didn't have enough ground clearance - compared to the rocks - so stiffer bars would work for me.

Re: Excellent: Addco Rear Sway Bar for WJ's

With any luck I'll be replacing the front and rear sways with these over the weekend...can't wait to get rid of that annoying squeak up front and the "go-go gadget" feeling around long, lazy curves.

Re: Excellent: Addco Rear Sway Bar for WJ's

Well, I only got around to replacing the front sway. The new one is much heavier duty. The front end definatley feels more planted and give that "on rails" feeling when taking turns quickly. Unfortunately, the rear end is still sloppy. I'll probably get that one done this coming weekend. Turns out the Addco rear sway does not work with my heavy duty rear diff cover, so I'm going to clean up the stock one and install it so I can get the addco on. I don't think I'll be backing into any boulders anytime soon.

As far as the front sway goes, it took 6 bolts, (4 at the front crossmember and one each at the end links) and the old bar was out. I had no problems with any of these bolts...I believe they were all 17mm, and I had sprayed them a few times with PB the week before. Once the old bar is out, you re-use all the bolts as well as the metal U-shaped bushing eyes. I drilled and tapped mine to accomodate grease fittings, but from what I understand, none of that is necessary. Bolt the new bar up loosely to the end links and swing it up into place so you can attach it to the crossmember. Super straight-forward job, just like the rear. Bolt access is just a little more of a PITA, but nothing worth mentioning. I did this all on ramps. No jacks needed...no removal of wheels needed either.

More to come once the rear one goes in...

Re: Excellent: Addco Rear Sway Bar for WJ's

Just got my sway bar & as I was about to install, I noticed that the stabilizer bar link is made from the same weak material as the bar itself. Any reason or benefit in replacing that also? Seems like it would certainly stiffen the end up - possibly too much? Anyone have any thoughts?

Re: Excellent: Addco Rear Sway Bar for WJ's

Yes...now the weakest links are, in fact, the end links! The issue is that I havent' found any beefier replacements. It would be nice if Addco had upgrades for these as well. The only other ones I have found are extended links for use with a lift kit.
