2500 miles towing a 5000 lb enclosed trailer without a single issue!

With all the negativity that seems to permeate this section of the forum I thought I'd post something positive for a change.

We just finished a nice little trip that took us from Central Florida to the Ozark Mt's of Mo then NC, N. GA and back to Florida.

Our "rig", a 2011 Overalnd 4x4 Hemi pulling a 7'x16' dual axle V-Nose motorcycle trailer running right at 5000 lbs. for reference the trailer is longer, taller and wider than the Overland and just about the same weight.

Our trip combined flat high speed highway, mountainous high speed highway and tight 2 lane mountain roads.

The Overland never skipped a beat. Once I got a handle on which was the best gear for the situation and made the manual selection (4th on most of the highway and 3rd on some of the really treacherous sections) it pulled with relative ease. So well in fact that on 2 occasions we motored right on past similar size trailers in tow , one being pulled by an F-150 with their small modular V-8 and the other being a Ram 1500 with the 4.7L.

Having started the trip with about 1200 miles on the Overland I suppose you could consider this to be an accelerated "break-in" and I've gotta tell you, the overall feeling of the Overland since we're back is one that is MUCH smoother with better throttle response and an overall more refined feel. For those who said to owners with the shudder issue that you need to wait a few thousand miles for things to run-in (to which I called a BS) they may have something!

Overall the Overland was the perfect tool for the job, it never let us down, was comfortable beyond expectations and acquitted itself quite well on the highway and on the twisty back roads.

For those that care, we averaged right around 10.1 MPG running 65 - 75 on the highway with well over 6000' of altitude change over the course of 10 days with a total weight of ~10400 lbs.

Re: 2500 miles towing a 5000 lb enclosed trailer without a single issue!

Glad to hear everything went well. I have not had any tow weight on my overland yet. Just wondering how the ride was with the trailer hooked up and did the air suspension keep it level? Also what type of engine and trans temps did you see?

I use a weight distributing hitch since the tongue weight of my trailer is 700 lbs, more than I wanted to load the rear axle if I could get away without doing it. Also, the manual explicitly states trailers over 3500 lbs REQUIRE a weight distributing hitch. With the hitch adjusted correctly there's only about 300 additional lbs on the rear axle and the air suspension had no issue at all.

The engine temps ran like this for the bulk of the trip:
Water = 208
Oil = 235
Trans = 158

On a couple long (5 - 7 mile 5%+ grades) 3rd gear pulls maintaining 60 - 65 mph I saw these temps, they never went higher:

Water = 215
Oil = 248
Trans = 169 (saw 173 ONCE when I wasn't dropping gears manually)

Overall well within the comfort zone and if you've ever run I-40 from Knoxville, TN to Ashville, NC you know the types of roads we were running and I didn't baby it.

My bet is no problem (assuming you mean snow, not water "ski's"). Remember, the WK2 Hemi has basically the same engine and trans as the Ram 1500 Hemi but with a shorter wheel base. If you're talking Jet Ski's it won't even know they are back there.

Did you use the tow/haul button the whole time? Say, if I was towing something that's less than 2500lbs, do I need to press the tow/haul button?

I will be making a short " test tow" with my Overland this coming Saturday. Approx 90 miles round trip towing an 18' car hauler with a 3800 lbs rock buggy on it. I think it will be close to 6000 lbs total(3800 for buggy and approx 2000 for trailer).

Reading your positive results sure makes me feel better about next Saturday.

BTW did you have trailer brakes hooked up??

Nice report mjw, time to drop the boat or tow a camper.

Yes, i used the Tow/Haul button all the time. You know real quick when you've forgotten to push it, the taller gearing when not using it is obvious with that much weight. (obviously this only applies to the Hemi as the V6 trans doesn't have the variable gearing)

Yes, trailer brakes from day one. I wouldn't want to be without them with this weight.

Great to hear, mine has worked very well pulling our open car hauler. Tow haul mode works very well.
