5.7 Hemi First Oil Change 7+ Quarts???

Just got back from my dealer. Jeep turned 1,000 miles last weekend and brought it in for it's first Oil Change. I know a lot of people will probably scoff at this, but that's another thread ha ha.

I brought my own Castrol 5W-20, 7 quarts (946 ml each) as all the literature says is the capacity with a filter change, which they also did. [By the way, the tech brought me in to show me how tight the factory filters are on, and yes, the gasket did separate from the filter and stayed up in the filter housing. He showed me all of this and also showed me the gasket after he fished it out. Very cool of them].

Anyhow, when the service adviser came to get me to tell me the car was all set, he said "you're going to need to pick up and add another quart of oil, it's a quart low". I told him I thought the capacity was 7 quarts, and he just kind of shrugged and said it needs another quart.

Prior to this oil change, I have checked the dipstick with the factory fill, and noticed that is was above the hash marks somewhat. The dipstick doesn't seem very specific and only reads where to "Add" oil, but not any spot where it's exactly "Full".

In any event, I checked the dipstick. Very hard to read with all the clean, clear oil ha ha. It appeared to be somewhere near the bottom of the hash marks.

I did add about a quarter of a quart to bring it up a bit, but was hesitant to add a full quart for fear of over-filling it.

Just curious to know if anyone else has experienced something similar regarding the "Exact" amount of oil to add with an Oil/Filter change??

Re: 5.7 Hemi First Oil Change 7+ Quarts???

Been googling this topic, and been finding lots of Hemi owners who claim 7 - 8 quarts of oil (and every amount in between) for a perfect "fill".

Wonder why the book states 7?

Then again, that certainly wouldn't be the first mistake in the manual!!

Re: 5.7 Hemi First Oil Change 7+ Quarts???

My buddy (Chrystler mech) says that he finds that 7.5 qts has been better for the 5.7, even though it specifies 7. I'm going to try his recommendation on my next change. I've been running at spec without issues, for a year (knock on wood).

Re: 5.7 Hemi First Oil Change 7+ Quarts???

I put 7 in my last oil Change. No problems here. And I was on a leveled driveway.

Re: 5.7 Hemi First Oil Change 7+ Quarts???

I too used exactly 7 quarts and noticed the level on the dip stick fluctuates. Immediately after shutting it down it reads on the low side of the hash marks but 5 or 10 minutes later it's near the top.

With the factory fill it was reading high 5 or 10 minutes after shutting down. I think they overfill a bit when they pump it out of the 55 gallon drums because of the initial low reading when all the oil hasn't had a chance to flow back into the pan. I'm sticking with the 7 quart change.

Re: 5.7 Hemi First Oil Change 7+ Quarts???

they hold 7 qts, I have chnaged both of mine and if you add more than 7 it will end up over the max amount. Surprised me but I had to drain some out the first time.

Re: 5.7 Hemi First Oil Change 7+ Quarts???

Very odd some people post this, and other say 7.5 - 8. I wonder if everyone's reading the dipstick differently?

Dealer put in 7 in my car this morning, said it's a quart low, for me to add another. Hmmmmm.......

And when you say "Over the Max Amount".....according to what? There's no top mark on the dipstick. You mean past the top of the hash marks??? If that's the case, mine came overfilled from the factory!

Re: 5.7 Hemi First Oil Change 7+ Quarts???

Well, after adding about an additional third of a quart yesterday (making a total of 7.3 quarts), checked the oil this morning. Jeep was parked on a perfectly level surface overnight, and checked it cold before starting it. Level was right to the top of the "hash marks". Think I'm gonna leave well enough alone.

Re: 5.7 Hemi First Oil Change 7+ Quarts???

I added 7 quarts for my first oil change at 3600 miles. The dipstick read 1/3 of the way up from the bottom of the hashmarks. Oil is full if it is between the hashmarks.

Exactly! Below the hash marks, add some oil, above the hash marks, you're overfilled. Anywhere on the hash marks you're good to go. Don't over think it!

Re: 5.7 Hemi First Oil Change 7+ Quarts???

No idea since the dealer did my change, but when I checked the oil it was about 1/8" under the fill mark on the dip stick. Added a quart to get it 1/8" from the full line.

Re: 5.7 Hemi First Oil Change 7+ Quarts???

Capacity says 7 qts. with filter. Dump that much in you should be good to go. Most dipsticks aren't all that accurate -- they are only intended to show change (no oil on dipstick, bad -- too much oil on dipstick when it was fine the last time you checked it, also bad (probably gas or water in the oil).
