Seriously the Cabin Air Filter should be made with activated carbon, not paper. I found a place that makes custom carbon filters:

The dimensions are 9.5" x 10.5" x 1.25"
Cost $125/6 pack, inc. Shipping. (which is about the same as the paper filters at Autozone)

Problem solved!

BMW has a sensor that switches it to re-circ also.

Yes it should be. If you want to remove the paper filter and double-check the dimensions are 10.5 x 9.5 x 1.25

took a pic of the recirc button on my BMW - it works great. you can see there's a manual and automatic setting.

I had that on my 2010 M3 and there were times the smell of diesel still got inside the car. I think the only way to keep out that stench is to wrap the vehicle in a gigantic plastic bag.

Guess I always thought that "A" stood for AIR as in Outside Air. I always had mine on then and it worked perfectly.
